The upcoming, anticipated, way-too-excited GEC 85's Thread!

The Tuna Valley knives are not the 85 pattern. They are 3-7/8" closed, the 85 is 3-5/8" closed. Further, the Tuna Valley knives are made by Queen.

Drat! Foiled again! :o
Since they're cousins, I thought my Tuna might be appropriate for this thread. Since someone asked, Queen tried hard on this knife but it's still no GEC. There's tiny little details that will probably drive some people crazy but honestly I don't care. They made a real beauty of a knife and in a steel I love to use(154 CM).

No worries Doc! They are really nice looking tear drops and like Jake said, they're technically the same pattern, I just didn't want people here to get confused on how you received your "GEC 85" already.

If you or someone else gets both the Tuna Valley and a GEC 85, I'd love to see them side by side, just to take note on the difference in sizes.

I got the TV in the buffalo horn. I don't own a GEC 85, but may have to get one now. :) And to me, the TV I got has as good fit/finish as any GEC I have.

The TV stag images caused some confusion. Just to clarify my posts, I knew he was joking and my posts above are regarding TV knives not GEC. On a side note, it would be nice if someone that owns one of the new TV EO teardrop jacks start a new thread with pictures and a write up. I was sad the buffalo horn sold out so fast.

Anybody have a copy of the "our cover" page from GEC (looks like a magazine page) that has an image of four of the 85's? The antique jigged bone is in the top right hand corner and the bottom knife is a polished stag.

I can't find it anywhere..

Ho boy, now the wait gets a bit more intense: got the shipping notice email. In addition to my bloodwood and micarta single flat blades, I also managed to snag my very first stag knife as well! Super excited for myself, as well as for everyone else that got in on the SFO.
Now the real fun starts when all the new pictures begin pouring in!!
Thanks,
Brian

Also got highly hopes for polished stag

The polished stag should look something like the bottom knife in Rods picture he posted - thanks for saving it. I think the unpolished stag is what GEC has posted in the "what's happening" section. I have high hopes too. I don't think the polished stag on the washington jacks turned out right so I'm guessing/hoping they got it worked out and these should look good.

This stag was labeled "cull" stag - I'd guess that cull stag is from the USA? Anybody know? Not that it matters a lot, but nice to think of these being 100% American. Seems like a fair amount of the stag comes from overseas.

If you're talking about this photo above ^^^ of two 85's from the recent run in stag..I question if that's the 'polished stag' offering but I could be wrong.
Just based on Mike's description he wrote that

KNIFE A = standard stag (cull stag left largely alone)
KNIFE B = polished stag (cull stag mostly polished off)

The 2nd photo shows some photos of what looks to be labelled as 'polish stag' with more of the texture taken off.
But I suppose we'll find out soon.

The polished stag on the Washington Jacks are actually the most desirable in my opinion.
They are fully polished as the name would suggest.

Not certain about the origins of cull stag though.
In any case, I await to see my single spear~

I thought the best stag comes for the Indian sambar deer . I just assumed that it was a product of that region . Perhaps someone will enlighten me. Maybe the stag on the 85 is lower grade cosmetically , hence the term "cull"

I could be 100% wrong, but I think Mike referred to this as cull stag, as in it was culled from previous runs because it wasn't good enough to be high quality stag on its own. As to its origins, he is the only one who would know. I'm sure he will chime in at some point, but I got the impression that this was left overs meant to be polished and then some of it was only polished a little, and on other knives some more, but with all or most pieces left with some texture.

Personally, I liked the polished stag from the first run of 77's the best, but with GEC, you never really know what you're going to get. Same is true with the bone colors. I think this is because they're using all natural materials and anything can happen, even if you do everything the exact same way every time. Just look at what happened with the snakewood on the 47's.

At any rate, I can't wait to get mine in hand. I got the tracking info, but doesn't appear to be in the mail quite yet. Looking like Monday for me.

I am like Tim hoping for closer to Washington Jack polished stag. That is what I had in mind when ordering but I am sure I will like whatever it ends up being.

I'm thinking the same thing you are - I'm guessing the picture of the pair of stags you posted is likely the unpolished version. I'm guessing the pic ramrod posted has the polished, but who knows.. I guess we will find out in a few days. I like the way the polished stag WJ looked too, Charlie said they had a problem with a bunch of it turning out rough. Everything I've seen for the 85 stag looks finished very well - smooth. I can't wait to pop the tube to see what comes out... I think Mike hit a home run with these and whatever I get I'm sure will find a place in my pocket.

I see, that makes sense. I thought he literally meant "cull" stag. Sounds like he meant culled from his store lol.

Sorry I misunderstood/missed the photo that ramrodmb posted up.

Agreed all curiosity will be satisfied within a couple of days, can't wait~
