The upcoming, anticipated, way-too-excited GEC 85's Thread!

drooling....

I think this is some of the best jigging I've ever seen come out of GEC.

I reserved the 2 blade micarta and yellow bone...Might have to see if somebody wants to trade!!

For me it's a toss up between micarta and yellow bone - fortunately I reserved one of each!

I ordered blood wood and am still happy with that but that yellow bone does look good. I'm still thinking that this knife would have looked fantastic with an ebony option.

I'm anxiously checking my email for the notice that these are ready to buy. I wish I had reserved 3-4 of them

I read somewhere they should ship this week. I'm watching the e-mail too. I have a "sure" reserve and a "standby" reserve. I hope I get them both. I was too late to get in on a 2 blade jigged antique but hoping to trade for one or buy one. I think GEC is teasing us with no pictures of the scandi-grind blades.

Anxiously awaiting with the rest of you,
Rick

It does look good in ebony (and blackwood) but I'd guess the intent is/was to mix it up & have some new options on this run. The yellow bone was done last time but in a different jigging pattern. Personally, I like the yellow this time more than last.

So I'm curious... When I pre-ordered my Single blade in Bloodwood from Mike, I "think" I saw "Sabre grind", which I chose because I have plenty of regular ground 85's and wanted to try something different. Then I saw in this thread someone mentioning "Scandi" and then I got real excited, as I 'd never seen a scandi grind on a small folder like this (I've got a few fixed blades with a Scandi and really like 'em). So today I check the GEC website and I see Sabre grind. Then I check my reservation notice and I see "Scandi". I'm also assuming these were offered in only two flavors, the regular full flat, and the mysterious "S" grind. I'll be happy with either, but please help de-fuddle my be-fuddled brain.

If I recall correctly the wording on the CK reservation site was for a Scandi grind. GEC's site lists two blade types in production for the 85, a Sabre Spear, and a Spear. I haven't seen any pictures of blades or anything definite regarding what the blade is going to look like. Not sure if this helps, but if your reservation notice says scandi it sounds like you are safe if you were not wanting a ffg blade. If your wondering if it's a scandi or a sabre spear, I think everyone is wondering the same thing.

I've got the 2 blade coming. Maybe they will be darker. More Autumn and less gold.

Last year for the 77 Northfield Barlows the single blades turned out lighter than the 2 blades - I'm hoping the same thing happens with the 85. I guess we will find out very soon...

I wasn't to excited about the corset shield early on but I've definitely warmed up to it now . Glad I ordered some . The natural miacarta on their front page now looks great.

btmccutcheon, NJBillK: Thanks!:)

On this green briar, sanding down the jigging worked well.
The rivets were deep and stable, the handle scales stayed tight, and the color became nice.

The yellow jigged bone is by far my top choice on this run, but I am just surprised how good the bloodwood and natural micarta are turning out. I haven't really liked GEC's offerings with these materials in the past, but something about those shields and big bolsters really break up the blandness of the micarta especially. The bloodwood seems to have a little more character than some of the runs from the past.
I sure hope I have a chance at one of those two if my 2b yellow jigged bone doesn't come through.

I just happened to have ordered both the Micarta and Blood Wood. I can't wait!

Kinda bumming about my "smooth autumn bone" aka "rotten banana"...I was hoping for SAB like the last 77s. *sad face*

At least the antique yellow looks superb!!!!

I agree, the Smooth Autumn Gold didn't turn out so hot. With jigging, that color is always superb, but smooth is hit or miss. I lucked out with the last Washington Jack, but I have a Big Jack that is a bit lackluster.

Hopefully I didn't screw up my reservation..... I let go of a single blade micarta and bloodwood, so I'm only in for an antique yellow. This isn't my favorite pattern, but they sure are turning out nice. I know one or two people will be happy I cancelled a reservation!

I might have to pick you one of the 2 blade natural micarta versions when they hit the secondary market. The single blade factory photo looks great.
