The Walking Dead....New Weaponry

I could have called it flux-shielded arc welding but I call it SMAW, just like my teacher (who was a navy welder) does and like most welders, I do have plenty to learn.

I've always used 6010 for the root and 7018 for the hot pass, thought everyone did and I think that's the setup for the AWS cert but with smaller pipe. 6010 burns at a lower temp and solidifies faster, your method is backwards.

Oh your taking the certs, gotcha. thats all fine and dandy and if you like it that way have at it. But if you just widen the gap an extra 1/8" and use 7018 for the root its so much easier especially considering how easy it is to punch holes with 6010 and 6011. 7018 also doesn't penetrate as much which makes it easier to be more thorough via longer "sways" when trying to weld the pieces together to form a solid flush backing. making a stronger more in depth weld. But you are more then welcome to take this with a grain of salt. this is just my experience with it YMMV. As to your teacher, was he a sat diver? when I say marine welder I mean commercial diver, lots of welding was done in the 70's and while its far more common to see bolts and aluminum O-rings vs marine welding its still there for the occasional patch and sat diver who TIG's. Also Im surprised your teacher calls it SMAW, does he call MIG and TIG, GMAW and GTAW
respectively?

As to the 10018, get some if you can, makes you feel like the god of all welding. As I understand it that's what was used for the I-beams in foundation that needed just one really strong pass

anywho I dont want to get any infractions for taking this thread off topic so back on to gerber and their support of the show.

No it's not the best stuff in the world but guess what, we are still the minority who knows and cares. Most people I've talked to who aren't knife crazed like us still consider Gerber to be a good name, and to an extent I agree. Like what was mentioned, cutbacks hurt and I severely doubt anyone is willing to take a pay cut so that the show has some more Busse Gemini's or a proper knife in everyone's pocket. That just doesnt happen. Now that isnt to say I (and i'm sure many of you too) wouldn't mind seeing some generosity from the companies we know and love. but again, ain't gunna happen.

besides its better that POS stuff chipping and rolling over your GB hatchet losing a good bit of steel in some dead person's head

Ah, I'll give your advice a try, especially the 10018. Shoot me an e-mail if you ever want to talk shop, I'm always up for sharing techniques!

Enough derailing, I think it would have been cooler if all the prop knives, machetes, etc. were acquired at yard sales and hardware stores. It would be more realistic and not come of as a product placement.

It doesn't matter what belt knives they have in this season. BG make sence to me, since imagining the scenario, there would be plenty on shelves of large stores. They are doing bulk makes on the knife, and they aren't the best selling. Every Gander Mountain, Walmart, Bass Pro shop, and even some of the smaller stores, have a large in house stock of the BG line.

So, therefore scavenging, you would likely turn up plenty of orange handled knives. Its the stuff like the Busse from last season. It would have to be Darryl's knive, because there aren't too many of them laying around.

There were a few issues I had with the first season. Take Merle for example. He sawed through his hand, because he couldn't cut through the handcuff steel. Ok, I'll buy that, but why didn't he cut through the rusty allthread the cuffs were around? Why not travel in style, I was a few humvees sittin' around, with 50cal M2's on it. 240B's layin' around. M4's, but honesty, I would want a shotgun myself.

Ah, the lovely television, and all its wonders.

I think the BG knives would be seen in a 'pocylypse scenario. There are just too many of them being pushed through a large distrbution network.

As for how good they are? That horse is been beaten to death, then come back to life as an undead horse, and beaten to death again. It now lays rotting somewhere in downtown Atlanta, close to the CDC. :D

I seriously just watched the whole thing on netflix so i would have the slightest idea what we were talking about. I can see why BG knives would be easier to access but I would much rather see a knife-nut knife on the show.

Seriously... just stop the nothing but crapping on the BG line. If you don't like it, then don't buy it. Sure, their steel isn't awesome, but it could be worse. The build is sturdy on both the machete and fixed blade. Endlessly whining about "how bad they are" will just get this thread buried in W&C.

and besides the BG machete would make an ideal ZK knife. It's sturdy enough and there should still be loads left on the Wall-Mart shelves, so you'll always be able to get a replacement should you find yourself having to leave one wedged in a stubborn zombie cranium.

No, the ZK line would work better. They have ZK right in the name.

No didn't even think about it - I'm probably easy zombie fodder since I don't like the shows and haven't studied their methods. If they start showing up I'll research them more. :p

Well it definitely had it's BG plugs but it wasn't too bad. I think the walkers have gotten awfully slow though...hardly seems sporting really.

Loved seeing all those blades last night regardless of who they came from. Gerber's Facebook page is definitely milking the spotlight.

I really don't like in the church one of the guys stabbed through a zombie with the Gator Machete. That thing does not have a stabbing tip at all, it would be like stabbing with the edge of a brick.

You have to remember that the walking dead have many holes scattered throughout their bodies so it's pretty easy to stab right through to the spinal cord.

I still say that the rock the sheriff guy used (been too long, can't remember names) is better than most of the Gerber stuff they got, except the BG machete, because it has at least decent length. I laughed quite hard when he threw the rock.

He should have kept the rock and tied a chain around it. That would have made a great weapon.
