The "Whatever" Thread

So which kinds are you hoping to find?...taste the best?

Black Trumpets (aka, Black Chanterelles)

Chanterelles

Hen of the Woods

Sulfer Mushrooms

None of these are spring shrooms though. Maybe if we are lucky the Chanterelles by the end of June. All delicious!

Oh and I forgot to mention the very elusive trained attack mushroom called the - Lobster Mushroom. Well it isn't really called the Lobster until after it attacks and parasitizes another mushroom. The transformed mushroom is the Lobster.

I was thinking about having a sticky made in here expressly for first time buyers and potential customers to ask any questions or ask for recommendations.

John can be quite busy and getting to emails with someone asking a bunch of questions, just to end up Not ordering a knife must be a huge time sink and extremely annoying.

Anyone have any input?

I think that is a good idea. Before I bought my first JK, I read through hundreds of threads, scoured the forums for pictures and spent 10's of hours researching. A simple, semi-comprehensive sticky, open to questions answered by The Experts would have made things a lot easier.

Seems like a good idea. We have enough Supporters and experienced JK collectors here who can answer most questions if John is too busy.

I am no expert but I do put in the miles and hours to occasionally find a few mushrooms. Several guys at work have been asking me questions about my hobby and where I find mushrooms. It's a difficult question to answer. To be fair to everyone I decided to post this pic. I marked my favorite spot. Once you get to this marker fan out in a zig-zag pattern uphill till you get to a bench. I usually start finding them within 10-15 feet of the marker and move up the "holler" repeating the same pattern. Happy hunting!

this is pretty funny. good stuff.

this is the whatever thread, so i'll take advantage....

I signed up for a fly-fishing tournament this weekend (first time). new water. new people. it's about an hour from my house. but, i knew i'd be just fine when i got to the shop for the welcome, rules, etc... and they had a keg. good beer. and, it was a good crew.

the rivers are all blown out (water is real high), so the weekend will be interesting. but, i'm looking forward to trying something new. and, when the fishing is bad, the drinking is always good. :D

Want a quick tip for dropping a fly, lure or egg sac in a hole, under heavy cover or under a washed out bank hiding a fish?

Push the hook through the edge of a leaf, flip it up stream and let the current drag the leaf (and your fly) into the hiding spot, and with a quick twitch of the rod tip, it should tear the leaf and pull free. The leaf will continue to float down stream and your fly will appear to have dropped off its sanctuary just in front of that tough to get to fish...
This has helped me land a few stubborn fish that didn't want to come out and say hi.

If I had seen your post earlier, this may have helped. At least you got some time on the water, I am heading out tomorrow.

Great tip!!! Thanks.

Ok, tally is in! 4 landed, 2 missed 2 brown, 1 brook, 1 rainbow. All were between 10"-12" and legal keep in NJ is 9" @ 6 limit.

Kept 3 of the 4 since one didn't look too healthy, there is some sort of kidney infection going around that is beating up the trout here... Creates these red blister like shows on the skin of the fish, rather unsightly.

Had one for dinner tonight,
1/4 of an Italian long hot minced
1/4 Italian fryer diced
fresh squeezed orange juice from 1/2 of a sweet orange
1 large clove of garlic mashed
Fresh parsley
2 scallion
Some grated orange rind

sautée down to soften and open in some virgin olive oil, evo will work if you keep an eye on it.
Then add the bread crumbs to soak up the juices and toast a little in the mix as it dries. Use that to stuff the trout with some left over orange slices and slivers of italian longhots if you want more heat.

Bake @400 for ~20 mins.

Well, I'm off to have a beer around a fire. Enjoy the night folks!

Oh btw, the semi-wharncliffe on my USK worked Great and the jimping up front worked Perfect for traction when zipping the trout, they are slippery enough as it is!

That's why we call it "fishing" not "catching", still sounds like a good weekend. I got out Friday evening to one of my favorite stretches of water. Conditions all appeared perfect but the fish didn't know that. I fished a couple hours and never got a bite. I did call a couple young gobblers in Saturday. I had one within 20 yards strutting but decided to let him go and wait for a larger one. And iI did stumble across enough mushrooms yesterday to pick a bag, gotta love this time of year:thumbup:

nice! sounds like a good weekend.

I've been reading through so many of the threads in this subforum and have concluded it is my favorite subforum on the bladeforums. I like the idea of having a spot where other members who have the knives can answer questions.

I have 5 hks and a JK tool waiting for sheaths :)

FYI I had to pick up a wet dry vac for clean up and noticed it suggested 'perfect for workshops.' I just sucked up so much wood dust...not all if it but a lot of it :D
