The "Whatever" Thread

Around me, Wal mart will sometimes have .22 but when they do it is like pulling teeth to get someone back there to open up the cage to get you some. It's like how do they sell out when you can't get anyone to open the dang cage? Basically a 5 minute Walmart trip turns into a 30-45 minute Walmart trip if you buy any ammo. Now Academy is the go to place, they keep it at the gun counter which is always manned, if you go early on Monday, Wednesday, Friday which is the day they get ammo trucks you can just about get some .22 everytime. Sometimes the little 50 box sometimes the 100's every now and then the 250 or larger, they do have the 3 box limit also but only 1 on the large boxes.

I'd have called the manager, not necessarily in front of the clerk, and headed back to get my other two boxes. Good job on staying a gentleman.

i have heard folks around the country that say that they have a problem with getting the .22 ammo. not in VT. don't get me wrong, we used to, but that was a couple years ago when the you-know-what started hitting the fan.

nowadays, you can get it anywhere. gunshops and the box stores. no problem. no limit even anymore.

What kind of prices though?

Supplies here are usually not high and prices are higher. For whatever reason I don't mind $10 for CCI in the 100 rd box although I won't snap it up unless it's $7 of $8 a box. But I can't bring myself to pay $5/50 for Rem Thunderbolts or American Eagle (even the 50 rd box instead of their 40 rd box.)

Maybe I'm not desperate enough.

yup...you guessed it. if i recall, it is $9.99 for 100 rounds of CCI.

I'm with Wade on this, I refuse to pay inflated prices for plinking ammo. I can go to any gun show or flea market and buy bricks of 22 if I want to pay double what the larger chain stores are selling it for. I'm not blaming all of the small dealers. I talked with one and he said he marks rimfire up the same percentage as everything else but has to pay more for it. On the other side are a few small dealers who now only seem to stock the same ammo as WalMart just marked up 100% or more. It's bad that part of my normal Saturday routine is making a trip to the local Mart to see of they have rimfire ammo:mad:

the funny part is i don't even have a 22 caliber firearm. and, yet i still buy the ammo! :D

i had an old henry lever rifle, but i could never get it to shoot very well, so i got rid of it. i will get a 22 pistol and perhaps another rifle soon (hence the continued purchasing). i am very much looking forward to our (VT) big gun show in Feb.

For right now I don't need any .22 ammo. I never shoot my Single Six, and I sold my Mark III. I've got plenty left for Connie to shoot, we don't get out too often anyway.

No .22s at Wally World or the Sportsman Warehouse today.
I have about 50 rounds for my 24C.Would like to have more, but luckily, it being a single shot ,I don't go through 22s like I did when I had a 10/22.

I picked up 200 rounds of mini mags at a nearby sporting goods store in addition to some .223 and 12 ga. slugs.

Went to check out the prices on some smallish 357 revolvers, but I call it a successful trip, never the less.:D

I am trying not to spend much money in an effort to save for going back to college, but I would feel better if I had a handgun again.

Which revolver are you looking at? I love my Ruger SP101, saw one here in a gun show a few months back for 500

I was actually looking at the SP101 and LCR, but hesitate to pick up a 5 shot. They didn't have a short barrel GP100 or S&W 686+ which is kind of what I'm interested in.

I had a 686 years back but sold it, was a bit on heavy side (wish I still had it, the value has gone up since then). I figure even with just 5 shots, with a 357 you really only need one unless there is a gang of them. I bought a couple speed loaders but I must admit I need to practice with them.

If you have a Big R store in your area check out their prices. I see lots of what I consider better prices than normal gun stores on firearms. I have seen short barrel GP 100's there.

That's a good point. Their price on the sp101 was 530, which seemed pretty reasonable to me.

Congrats on the year, btw.

Thanks for the advice, John! Did a quick search, and it looks like the nearest Big R is in Andy's neck of the woods. We do have various farm and tractor supply stores that are pretty competitive with their pricing and a little more local. It really is just a matter of talking myself into it.:D

I've got a little more than 3,500 rounds of 22 long rifle up in my safe and have only managed to shoot maybe 200 rounds of it in the past year.

Thats about my stock pile to. Give or take 500 rounds. I try to keep my ammo can full. Any box that gets shot is replaced so the can is always full. Kind of a country boy insurance policy in case the country goes to crap. (More than it already has.)

I also keep a ammo can full of vacuum sealed seeds of alot kinds of vegtables and fruits. Havent opened it in two years! Hope they work if I ever need them
