The "Whatever" Thread

Ok, how's it been going folks?
I hope well.

Things have been a bit hectic for me as of late... Having thrashed my body as a youngin' doesn't bode well for having a job that requires the standing in a refrigerator on a cold (40°) flat concrete floor all day.
The main joint on my big toe hasn't had any cartilage in it for about 10-12 years, and the pain has been ramping up quite badly as of late. So I decided it was time to do something to fix it.

Good news/bad news:
Good news, the toe was salvageable.
Bad news, the joint was not...
6 pins, 1 plate, 4-6 weeks of no weight bearing, and an additional 4-6 weeks of light duty and no work...

So for the next month I am going to be hobbling around on crutches and a scooter, the second month I am going to be walking around, getting my bearings and figuring out how to walk on my new two piece toe over the old three piece.
Further good news, that second month will consist of me having some fires in the firepit, doing some fishing, taking some light walks and hikes with my daughter and the Misses, and generally enjoying some of the summer.
Hey, at least you got time off from work!;)
It's amazing how much we rely on our toes to keep us upright.
Enjoy your rehab and stay cool.

I feel for all you folks suffering through the heat wave that's over most of the country, we've been spared up here in the beautiful PNW which is good cuz I HATE anything above 70.

Awesome news on the steel, looks like I got on the books at the right time.

In terms of heat I moved from the shores of Lake Superior to the interior of the UP. It's like 10° hotter on average here than by the lake. I miss it tremendously for so many reasons beyond just it's simple beauty.

Time to work on some new ideas, my old designs don't get much attention anymore. jbarsquat saw one of my new designs when he visited the shop.

Sitting in the shop, listening to the rain, and just thinking.

We apparently got a little rain overnight, but could use some more.
The corn jumped up 4" after the rain it looks like -

We had the first real rain in a while pass through all day yesterday and last night up here in the PNW.
A real gully washer it was too by the looks of the trails this morning, luckily it passed and I was able to hike precipitation free this morning.

Ol' Slugo wanted to check out my Stag Jack.
I don't think he was impressed.

I found a hot spot for snakes along this seldom used road/trail.
I saw more snakes this morning than all I've seen in the few months I've been going to this area.
A few let me get glamor shots....

3 weeks until my pilgrimage to the JK knife making class. Any suggestions on a hotel that is both convenient and that won't provide complimentary bed bugs?

Normally, I like to pick a hotel on the fly when I get somewhere, but after driving 6ish hours after work the Friday before class I'd like to have the arrangements made.

There is a Country Inn and Hilton right by the I-80 exit, (next to Texas Roadhouse), and a Motel 8 just a few miles away. All are within 5 miles from me.

I usually extend a welcome to use our guest room when John has class or events but I am unable to for the July 8th date as we are going out of town for a wedding, sorry, would have enjoyed having you as a guest/friend.
There are several fairly new hotels within a few miles of Johns shop in Mokena at the Interstate 57 and Rt. 45 exit, puts you within 10 minutes.
this might be the least expensive
Super 8 Mokena/Frankfort /I-80
9485 West 191st Street , Mokena, IL 60448-8308 US
+1-708-479-7808

only about a million restaurants within 5 minutes.
enjoy the class, I sure did!
