The "Whatever" Thread

I liked the forum better before the format changed. Then you could see at the bottom of the page who was on the forum, at least I knew someone was here looking. Now you can't see if anyone reads the post or not.

You've answered my question. I miss that feature too and was wondering if only the moderators still had it.

I'm probably abusing it but I've been using the "like" button to let people know I've read their post (if it's important enough or a response to one of my posts). That way, if someone answers question I post, I don't have to post a response and they know I saw it.

It was interesting to see who else was "here" at the same time. I check into your forum about 5 times a day :D

I usually check between 4:30-5:00, before heading to work. Then a number of times after work depending on how much "waiting for the girls" time I have. Today I have drop off for summer camp so heading to work late.

I find myself not being able to sleep most nights (it's like my brain won't shut off, I have too much on my mind), so I've been going out to the shop so I don't wake up Connie with my tossing and turning. I keep a book out there now.

Reading is very relaxing when there are few distractions. The best parts of any camping trip for me is sitting by the early morning fire with a steaming cup of coffee and a good book. A cup of good tea helps me sleep......or a couple drinks of bourbon;)

Went camping yesterday/today and that was one of the best parts. I didn't bring any coffee, but it was nice to read without any distractions. No human voices for like 20 hours. It was pretty nice.

Been fighting the sd reader on my laptop, but I think I got it figured out.

A few pics from my hike/camp.

This is where I went. I had walked by a trail in some previous hikes, but never took the time to check it out.

Meandered for a while through the horse trails and ended up at Hutchins Creek.

Found a spot that was interesting, and decided to hang my hammock directly across from it.

The side of the creek where I hung my hammock is actually the Clear Springs Wilderness. Between that and Bald Knob Wilderness, there is nearly 10,000 acres of unbroken forest.

Near first light this morning I heard a splash in the creek, and saw these two playing around. They must have been heading down stream, looking for breakfast.

After that, I packed up my stuff and headed back to my car. I don't have a gps, but going by the time I spent hiking, I'd guess it was around 8-10 miles total.

John I hope you don't mind if I post this here.

I will probably put up a full trip report in W&SS in the next couple days.

there's an open invite get-together in central missouri this weekend if anyone wants to show up.
thread is in the becker subforum.

I don't mind at all, my wife was raised in that area, nice photos!

I'm a bit of a shutterbug and I have a pond in the backyard so there is always something to take pictures of. There's a grey/blue heron that comes to eat breakfast and a late night snack here just about everyday. He's extremely skittish and takes off if you get within 25-30 feet.
Sneaking up on him this morning.

Getting a bit closer

I've been spotted!

And away he goes

I use it to say that I read the message but basically have nothing to add unless I want to pad my post count.

Jbar, we have a bald eagle that has taken up residence on the Fox river less than a mile from where I live. If I find the nest, I'll let you know where.

I can point you to a good place and time for deer too. Not monster bucks but, deer nonetheless.

That would be very cool to get some eagle shots in warm weather. I usually track them along the Mississippi near the Wisconsin line

There are dozens of them that congregate at Starved Rock every winter. It's unusual to see one around here in the summer but we spotted one on the Sunday before Memorial Day while kayaking the Fox

All I had was my phone. It got close enough to see that it was mature with a white head and tail.

It was near the Fabyan forest preserve south of Roosevelt (38).
