The "Whatever" Thread

Yesterday was the first day this fall I got to spend any time in the woods. Fall turkey season and grouse season both opened on the same day but my main goal was scouting for the fast approaching deer season. Mykel M does such a great job taking us along on his hikes I decided I would do my best to share my day with you.

Today's gear, regardless of how many shotguns I own I still appreciate the simplicity of a single shot.

When scouting for deer the three things I focus on most are deer sign, food, and water. I didnt see any deer yesterday but I did find what I hoped to. First is a tree where a buck horned.

Next is food for the animals. The red oaks had a reasonable crop and there were wild grapes around.

This spring was very near the top of the mountain. I was surprised I was able to find it since It had been so many years since I hunted the area.

Lastly no post on a hike by Mykel seems to be complete without one of these. I believe this was the "deadly heart attack adder" because he damned near gave me a heart attack when I sat down and he started crawling. No pics of me holding him but I was gracious enough to let it live even though it almost got the best of me.

Thanks for the pics William, I'm glad you made it out unscathed to share 'em with us.
They sure remind me of all the time I spent wandering around in the NC woods.(especially during hunting season)

Glad you enjoyed the pics. I took a few of the turning leaves which were pretty just not as bright as other years. I got within 50 yards of a black bear but never got a clear pic of him. The area I was in is special to me. It's where I hunted 20+ years ago with my brother, father, uncles, and a few close friends. We used to stay on the mountain during hunting season in campers and tents. I have pictures of Thanksgiving dinners we shared that I'll post if I can find them. My father and uncles have quit hunting. My brother and friends all hunt different places now. I've been hunting by myself for so long that remembering those days seems like a different lifetime.

Anyone else get affected by the storm that went up the East Coast? Man, that thing was crazy, the winds were ridiculous. My recycling bin blew over, and it looks like I had a big party in my yard, there were bottles and cans everywhere. We don't usually get hammered like that this far north. I know Pennsylvania got beat up pretty bad. Here in NH, we had at the height of it around 275,000 people without power. I think we're still over 100,000 out right now. I still don't have any power, neither does my mom, but I did get her generator running last night. Luckily, the weather is not that bad so late in the year, so it's not as much of a hardship like it would be in the winter.

Happy Halloween!

good stuff folks!
we got snow today -- heck of a Halloween treat in my book.
grass, trees, and my back deck are all white -- roads are all wet.
the drive in to work tomorrow could be interesting.

I don’t envy you having snow this early in the season. I like the snow a lot more than the rainy 38 degree days though. I’m sure it will be flying here soon enough. Anyone else here love the snow and hate the bitter cold? For those guys that don’t have to deal with it, I’ll say bitter for me starts at about 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

I love snow.
I'm not a fan of below zero F (-18C or lower) wind chills/temps
I hate slush & ice.

Yeah the slush stinks too! 20 degrees and a foot of snow is a great day! Hoping for at least one of those this year.

I miss my old apartment on Matlacha Island, FL in the Gulf Of Mexico every year around this time.
Have not been back in 17 years now!

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
We got dusted here in Burien last night.
Inches further north.
Bring it on Ma!
