The "Whatever" Thread

Anyone bought any new interesting "toys"? I've reached the point in my life that I make a conscious effort to not accumulate too many new things. Most of the knives I've gotten over the past few years have been trades. The one exception is an annual knife show that we have been going to for many years. I did buy a Buck 110 last month off of another forum. I traded my last two 110s away the month before and immediately regretted it. I'm not in the market for any new guns but I do have a Super 14 Contender barrel in 30-30 heading my way. I haven't hunted with my Contender for many years but that might change this fall.

Many years ago I used to hunt groundhogs with a 30-30 Contender. Nowadays I just don’t have any interest in doing much of anything. I’ll be 70 in a few months, the closer I get to it, the less I feel like doing.

A friend of mine about your same age once said the less you do the less you want to do. I think he's right! Certainly after convalescing for the first year after my shoulder surgery it got to where I was so weak it was hard work just to go grocery shopping. And of course, that made me want to just do the minimum. But we only get one chance on to ride this ride so I'm trying to fight my way to where I was before. Each year I realize it will take a bit more work just to keep even, but I am determined to try! Once the nice weather is here to stay hopefully you'll start yearning to get back out into the shop.

My father will be 81 in a couple months and he's in good health for his age. He's a living example of that statement. He's gotten to the point that he only leaves the house for doctor appointments and he complains about them. Occasionally we'll drag him to a family function but it's a real chore.

The girl friends brothers car when I was 14 was a beetle and I learned to drive a manuel Trans with it. Pretty easy transition from motorcycles! Later I owned a '67 cream color beetle and then a 70 something orange Super Beetle, Super beetle had factory A/C, PRETTY RARE! Also had a VW Rabbit diesel that got an honest 50-54 MPG. Always wanted a VW THING and now they are scarce, collectable and pricey.

Factory AC is a crazy thought - I wonder how much of the whopping 50 or so HP the AC consumed? I'm hoping both of my kids can learn to drive manual on this, it's about as easy a shifter as I've ever driven, but is not friendly to size 13 feet.

Things and Ghias. both are wishful thinking for me these days. I knew a kid back in HS that had a Thing, and always wanted one, but holy cow are those out of reach! Kind of like my old Bronco...

My dad had a 59 bug when I was young. He used to let me shift it while he was driving, he would work the clutch and I would work the shifter while sitting in the passenger seat. Those were good times, I was around 7 or 8 I would guess.
I cried when we moved to New York and Dad had to sell the bug.

I bought a 69 bug and drove it when I was 19 or so...

I bought a dji drone and have started learning about working a flying camera. Here are some vids from a small distillery town just west of my home. Note, large files so be on wifi or a strong 5g...

I have also been having a little fun doing youtube knife unboxing vids because lord knows the world is in desperate need of more online content....

Those drone videos are impressive! I've wanted to at least borrow one to explore some rivers up/downstream of my easy access fishing spots, but realize I am old fashioned and would still prefer to get there the hard way...however, using them to spot blind bends when floating may be a good excuse

Just think.of it as a flying video camera.
The GPS enabled drones are awesome, just get it up above the trees/obstacles and fly it around. They have "return to home" which brings it back to land within a foot or two of where it took off from.
Makes it very easy even for and old goof like me...
You can get a decent HD GPS drone for $300 (holystone) - DJI drones are a little higher...

I have an appointment on April 12th for a consultation for inguinal hernia surgery. The doctor will decide then when the surgery will be done after some tests.
That does not sound fun - like other necessary surgeries though, it will be good to be fixed up at least...?

Edited to add: Hopefully that didn't come across wrong. I tend to put things off for way too long, and it is (usually) a huge relief to finally do something about it!

Hang in there John. To change topics, anyone plan to get more use out of there less than used JKs? Break them out and use them more? Let’s see them. Spring is in the air.
