I wonder if I'll even get Social Security. I think I've got 13 years left before I can retire at work but not sure how old you have to be to draw SS.

Good morning/night all. Freaking beautiful weather this morning. Birds are chirping, turkeys gobbling across the creek, geese flying over head. I will be picking mushrooms before I know it.

I wonder if I'll even get Social Security. I think I've got 13 years left before I can retire at work but not sure how old you have to be to draw SS.

You have a much better chance of drawing it than I do. :D

62 is earliest retirement age for social security and depending on your year of birth, full retirement is at 67 or 70 iirc.

permanent aliens (resident or non-resident) and naturalized citizens who have worked for 10 years (actually measured in calendar quarters, so does not have to be 10 years in a row) are eligible for Social Security benefits when they reach retirement age -- or disability benefits if they become unable to work after earning the 40 quarters of coverage. (I'm a bit iffy on this - it may only be 20 earnings quarters out of the past 40)

Long work week here, 24 1/2 hrs overtime before I clocked in this morning. That's more than I normally work in a month. Some of my co-workers are counting dollars while I count the hours away from my family. I'm lucky to have a good job and I'm not complaining but I sure will be happy to see a 40 hour week.

That's a tough one to deal with. Family is so important, it's tough to work all the time and miss the good stuff. I guess you have to do what's necessary, and make your money while you can. Then you can do something nice with your family with the extra dough!

With working 40 hours at night, I only get to see Connie during the day on Saturday and Sunday, otherwise it`s only for 40 minutes each day between when she gets home and I leave. I try to only work in the shop a couple of hours each day on the weekends.

I can`t afford to wait past 62, I`ll make more than I do working.

I did the math on this a while back - you have to live past age 81 or some such before your total benefits received are higher for waiting the extra 5 years -- this does not take into account the $15k+ you can make per year for those 5 years without reducing your benefit amount.

I figure with Social Security, and hopefully making knives, I'll make enough to stay in my house, and not have to sell it to go in an apartment.

Cowboy or a pirate...interesting. :) my backup plan should I just completely fail atife was to move to fijiband sell things on the beach. Doesn't matter what. Rocks maybe. I don't have to be successful at anything so long as I'm unsuccessful in a place I want to be I figured.

I love the last sentence lol!

When my father was old enough to retire and unsure if he wanted to we sat down and worked the dollars. I calculated how much he would receive total from SS and his pension minus the cost of medicare supplement insurance. We then calculated the difference between that and his take home pay. It was an easy decision once he realized how little he was actually making per hour by working and not retiring. I don't feel that I will be quite as fortunate with the money I lost when my former employer moved everything to China, my oldest son graduating from college with a healthy loan, and a baby running around in diapers. My wife is a lot younger than I so maybe she'll decide to get a job and take care of me someday. If not I'll probably put in as many years as my body will allow.

Well I'm going to win the lottery and then go be a Cowboy or a Pirate or maybe even an Astronaut.

That's my plan too. I've made far too many mistakes in my life to ever consider retiring the right way.

Hello everyone...I came across JK knives not too long ago. I just started posting away on the forum with no introduction. So I thought now would be as good a time as any.
I"m Brett, 48yrs old general contractor from Williamsport, PA. Living on a couple acres, married to a wonderful wife, having two girls 8 and 10 yrs old. Love everything outdoors. Trying to instill as much of my appreciation for that in my daughters. Knives have always been a big part of my life mainly through hunting, fishing, camping and work. Mainly owning production knives growing up, I decided I wanted some more "meaningful", "custom", "hard-working" knives. Thus, I feel lucky to have discovered John's work. As of yet I don't currently own a JK knife, but have a Tool on order and hopefully I can snag one of John's sale knives before then.
