This is a bourbon thread...

I am really thinking that I need to put everyone who posted in this thread on my ignore list:eek:

I just went through a bottle of Woodfords Reserve faster than anything I have drank in probably the last 15 years. I am really glad I cant get some of the other brands mentioned in this thread.:D

Yes, you can! You've just got to put a little extra effort in ...

You know you want to. :D

either:

1. They can't sell it (because they have no idea what the heck it is)
2. They can't get it (it's an allocated product, see reason 1)
3. Buff trace isn't making any right now (nobody has any bourbon)

LOL, I noticed you put "big box liquor store" in bold when quoting me. I do realize the irony of trying to get expert knowledge and service from any big box retailer, no matter what product. Unfortunately, as weird as it may or may not seem, here in the SF bay area we have very few boutique liquor stores to choose from. I think I'll try going directly to the distributors themselves and see if I have any luck that way. Please don't ever say again that "nobody has any bourbon" even if it's true. It's just too painful to read that sentence.

Cheers,
Jon

Ok, I picked up something I hadn't tried before today and I was going to save it for a bit, but the I won the big pot at little Texas Hold 'em tournament that my wife and I have with our group of good friends every Monday night, so when I got home I said, "What the heck!" This Ridgemont Reserve 1792 8yr is just excellent, especially at $25.99 on sale. Velvety smooth, a nice hint of charred Oak, and a really clean finish.

Look, I know winter is starting to recede here and there, but don't everybody go switchin' to margaritas just yet. Isn't anybody drinking any bourbon lately??

Cheers,
Jon

Buffalo Trace has become my everyday pour. It's not as complex as some others mentioned, but just a good solid, tasty bourbon for a good price. As the bottle gets lower, I'll have to compare and contrast it to Wild Turkey 101 and Elmer T. Lee (when the shipment gets in). Likewise, my Russell Reserve will have to do battle with either Wild Turkey Rare Breed or Four Roses.

I have just spent the last 10 or 15 minutes reading these threads and did not see one of my favorite sippin bourbons mentioned, Old Weller! Super nice, not always easy to find, my local store ordered it for me, well worth the trouble!

How nice to learn that I am not the lone Bourbon drinker here. I thought everyone on BF drank Scotch!

I've drank dang near nothin' but Bourbon for 20 years and have tried them all at one time or another. Some of my faves are: Woodford's Reserve, Knob Creek and Makers.

But honestly, while there's loads of choices, I still love a glass of JD over ice.

I mentioned it's older brother Weller Centennial somewhere. the nice thing about Old Weller is that it's cheaper, as smooth, and more complex than Makers Mark.

also...

Opened some Pure Kentucky XO the other day. Its heavy with wood, shoe leather, and rusty metal, lots of corn too. very little fruit. not really my style, but good.

I have not bought any new bourbons lately...strapped for cash:( But I did finish my Wild Turkey 101 during the Super Bowl. This coming pay day I'll have to buy a new bottle. Old Weller sounds intersting.

I've been noticing bottle age a lot lately. It's kinda a bummer. but I've also noticed that it seems to affect corn heavy bourbons the fastest. evidenced by the fact that my bottle of Sazerac 6 Rye tastes exactly like it did when I opened it 5 months ago, where as my bottle of Elijah Craig 12 tastes like my visa card after being opened for a shorter period of time. :(

Okay so I bought a bottle of something called Pendelton. It is not a bourbon but a Canadian whiskey blend. It was not all that I'm afraid. The liqour store guy talked up this whiskey and how it is from a small maker etc. In truth it really had little flavor, very, very smooth though. It did not have a pronounced whiskey smell but smelled like rubbing alcohol. There was a slight hint of sweet flavor, maybe maple but then it was literally like fire water...very light tasting, very little flavor and had the burn. If you like very smooth no tasting whiskey give it a try, but for my dollar there is plenty other smooth flavor whiskey/bourbons on the market for comparable price...I think it was around 25 bones. I would have to say I do not recommend this Canadian whiskey blend unfortunately.
I noticed I did not have a headache the next day though. Is it me or does bourbon leave a hell of a headache the next day?.

If you can find Noah's Mill Kentucky Bourbon, do no pass it up. I received a bottle for Valentine's day and it was outstanding. Strong caramel flavor with some spice, hints of smoke and an incredibly smooth bourbon finish.

Maker's Mark is my benchmark. Anything better is good bourbon, and anything worse I won't drink without a mixer. This is absolutely in another league compared to Maker's Mark. Much better than Knob Creek (which is also pretty decent) and Elijah Craig 12 (another good one). Same league as Pappy Van Winkle for about half the price.

Excellent that sounds good. I will try finding that one. It sounds lovely. Bourbon has some very good flavor and each is distinct in their own right.

Point of note:

if you find a store that carries pappy/van winkle/antique collection know that it is because it sells enough eagle rare/blantons/rock hill/taaka/dr. migillicutty's/rain etc. to do so.

buying some of the cheap stuff, helps them get the good stuff.

But...and this is good news for those with Celiac disease...the wheat proteins do not end up in the distilled end product so they are safe for Celiac sufferers to enjoy!

Now I know with all of these high falutin bourbons being discussed ya'll may laugh at my favorite but it is the best I have found for drinking straight over ice is Wild Turkey Rare Breed. This is a barrel proof meaning is is bottled directly from the barrel...no water added to bring down the alcohol content...or the taste for that matter. It is about the only bourbon I drink these days. (still having nightmares about Jeremiah Weed from my days in the service)

The Rare Breed is next on my list. Still loving the Buffalo Trace eventhough I did pick up a bottle of Four Roses Small Batch. The 4 Roses is excellent stuff, although it may be too refined - almost not enough heat.
