I have read through this post and was surprised no one mentioned basically the same thing happening in the trading forum. I've had 3 deals this week alone go bad. Having someone say yeah let's trade then at the last minute say nah I'll pass on the trade??? Really then why in the hell did you say let's trade and come up with some lame excuse why you don't want to. Feel free to chime in here but if someone has a knife and I say hey I have this knife and they say ok when you gonna ship, then turn around and change their mind? I was brought up if I make a deal with someone then ima gonna do the deal. I've even held knives for people who couldn't ship over the weekend and wanted to wait till Monday, so I put of other trades. Then come Monday said trader drops off the face of the earth. I guess my point is don't waste 2 or 3 day's of someone's time with emails and sending countless pictures to say no thanks. If you say you want to make the trade, or sale then just do it!

I too was flaked upon by a member with just a few posts in a trade, but mine was AFTER the trade was complete and he felt he got the short end so he started a thread in GBU making up some BS.

Then proceeded to say when he got the knife back he would auction it off and send the funds to charity to garner sympathy, guess what.... haven't seen or heard of him on here since.

The worst part is the deal wasn't even done on BF and now he got his knife back but i'm stuck with the only blemish on an otherwise stellar feedback record.

How about push for the deal, back out and hide behind the wife excuse, then go trade it to another bf member the very next second only to see the same knife surface two later getting caught in his own lie.

Any other..Flake stories?

I've only had one "I'll take it" back out... the worst part was he had a significant amount of feedback so I wasn't expecting him to flake out. It was an inconvenience, but I moved on.

The issue I've dealt with more in terms of flaking out are actually the reverse, where sellers for whatever reason rescind the sale. I've heard some amazing excuses on this front: two different people claimed to have had x item stolen from their car and work locker respectively just before they were headed to the post office. Another person told me that the item broke when their gf dropped it while packing it up. Maybe those things really happened, maybe they were hoping I'd pay via friends and family and when I paid via goods were pissed their scam blew up, maybe they had sellers remorse... whatever the case, when those sellers accepted my money they took on responsibilities that they were unable or unwilling to handle.

I discussed the Hotmail thing with some folks just out of curiosity. Apparently, there are many places like financial institutions and on-line marketplaces that will not accept "anonymous" e-mail accounts like mine. The wife does direct sales, and she indicated the same thing... especially the part that you mentioned about MULTIPLE e-mail addresses. That didn't actually occur to me, but after thinking about it, makes sense. Kind of like a guy with multiple IDs and passports when you really think about it.... might raise an eyebrow or two, LOL!

I think any email is anonymous to a degree, nothing keeps me from registering as brian.schultz@gmail.com even if thats not my name.
I know Ebay sends you an unlock code to your physical mail for verification and I guess the mail adress you get from your internet provider counts as verified. But other than that real.name@somethingmail.com just sounds better than xninjaX@hotmail.com with no actual way of knowing who is behind it.

Having multiple email adresses is not a bad thing either, IMHO. I have one for online shopping, one for forums and other sites where you have to register (and get bombed with spam) and another one (with my real name in it) for personal correspondence. Keeps my personal mailbox free from spam and makes it easy to find receipts for stuff I have bought.

Having said that, I totally agree with the OP. A mans (or womans) word isn't worth anything anymore, at least in the anonimity (is that a word?) of the web.
A shame really.

Dog gone!

I was just about to quit my day job to make a living trading knives on BF before all this started! Wait a minute, I just remembered this is just a hobby, not a way to make money, just a way to spend money!

And on a side note, I traded for a nice Fiddleback the other day and I am cutting an apple up with it for myself and my dog Sox.

I forgot to say, I will take the Sox dog!

I think the world needs more honest and good people! As a dealer, lots of people do me wrong but I guess that's business... As a paid dealer here on the forums I will say most on here are great though :)

Have a great weekend everyone!

When you are a knife dealer, it's part of doing business I suppose.

You have a knife to sell, we haggle back and forth and then come to a price we both can agree on. I then change my mind and want something else, and you as a knife dealer categorize that as someone flaking on a "deal"?

If so, I am a big flake!!!!.

Did I try to get a deal worked out..YES I own that.
In this place.. Stuff changes rapidly and shit happens.
BUT as a business owner..Just like a car dealer.
Some you sell and some go elsewhere.
Nature of the beast..
This thread has been geared toward many avenues of the stuff that has been going on in here.
I do understand you side as well.
I was pointing out INDIVIDUALS as a whole..

Sorry you are upset..
For the part I played in it.. I apologize..
Hope your business picks up..............?

YES THE COMMENT HAS BEEN EDITED---from Knutsforknives

So, if you and I cannot come to an agreement am I to expect the world to know?

So you and Gizmo did not come to a meeting of the minds; it was worthy of a comment on GB&U?

Wow, just wow........................................

I'd expect Knife dealers to have a greater number of instances like these, but I don't agree that it should be accepted there but not in the secondary market... We as non-dealers expect to be able to sell and trade to the same customers as a online knife dealer yet take minimal financial risk comparatively so why should we expect to be treated better when it suits us?

Giving your word to someone running a business vs someone in the secondary market shouldn't change the value and impact of your word. You can try to negotiate and say no thanks if you're not happy with the terms, but committing to a purchase and then backing out is flaking no matter who you do it to. To expect anything else is "hypocritical"

Edit: to be clear I'm not talking about whatever exchange was going on in the above posts, I'm just saying that negotiations are normal and to be expected... saying "yeah I'll take it" and then disappearing in the wind is flaking.

it appears the dealer's comment was changed maybe? so now it doesn't seem to make sense from the responses i see.....unless i am missing the obvious again?

i would ask what i missed, but it doesn't matter. sounds like a personal discussion.

This is all a mute issue..
A kicked the tires on a knife
he had in stock.
Just like I shop for a car.
Bottom line..
Buyer went elsewhere too buy his CAR........

Apologies made
Humans making mistakes..
We all do it,
Done deal..
Forgotten about.
Good luck with your business.

So the OP can dish it, but can't take it. Sounds a lot like hypocrisy to me. Doesn't matter who the deal was with, (i.e.) buyer, seller, dealer, trader, or etc. The purpose of this post was to point out "flakes". I myself, including many others, and the OP probably have at one time or another said, "I'll take it." Only to withdraw our statement after further reading the knifes condition in greater detail, no word from the seller for day or two (<--- yes this works both ways), or changing your mind because it was an impulsive decision.

Now, how you carry yourself after the fact is where integrity comes in. I've never used an excuse, imaginary friend, dog ate my paper, or any other of that nonsense. I've simply apologized for the inconvenience, wish the seller good luck, and would even honor the deal if the seller felt inclined to do so. Though my decision happens pretty quick, so the withdraw is usually instant and not a problem. Not after I sent my money, negotiated for "3" days on a price, or haggled the seller relentlessly only to change my mind later.

I'm pointing these things out, because I truly believe everyone deserves another chance. I would think that the OP could relate to that statement (about another chance). I respect everyone who comments in the G/B/U, even if we agree to disagree. But when I see the OP pop up time, after time, and constantly say how this person, and that person should be banned, or they've been added to his famous "ignore list". It makes me laugh and say, "Who are you to judge?!?!" And please stop with the I've been here longer, so I'm automatically "better" than you attitude. Which gives me more say so, influence, and I can have you banished demeanor.

The time you've been here doesn't mean a thing. Who you are, and how you carry yourself does.
