BFC is very diverse in it's subforums. W&SS is one of those forums where the subject matter varies from recommendations of bushcraft knives, hiking pics, discussing the skills needed to survive in the wild, and how certain gear aids one in a wilderness and survival situation. It is not however, a place where you can post anything you want. This is a specialty forum and as such discussions should be kept to the forum title.....WILDERNESS & SURVIVAL SKILLS.

Threads that discuss gear that is not directly related to W&SS will be moved to Gadgets & Gear or any other appropriate forum. Another Super Mod is on board with this as well as a W&SS Mod.

This forum is getting clogged up with non-W&SS discussion that is better suited for one of the many other subforums on BFC and it is straying from the true nature of the W&SS Forum.

So please help get this forum back on track with its intended purpose.

Roger that!

IF i may make a "tiny" suggestion though..........perhaps a WS&S SUBFORUM consisting of wilderness gear, tents, bashas, hammocks, firestarters, kits FAKS etc etc......?

W&SG? Wilderness & Survival Gear? Outdoor gear oriented... Not just "gear". Interesting notion :D

Spark also comments that he's open to reasonable and specific suggestions. Probably beating a dead horse here, but considering the nature of some of the posts that have recently been moved (more similar threads to be moved soon I expect), a subforum for the W&SS community seems to make sense. I'd like to be able to post about and comment on gear and equipment, and keep it within this community. I know that this is where I'll find the type of perspective that I'm looking for. Just a thought.

Hey guys, I kind of broached this subject already in the thread asking for feedback about subforums among other things.
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=727665
I'd like to see more specific outdoor forums. Actually an outdoor section separate from Tactics/Training. Maybe add a Hiking/Camping forum, or both, something for trip reports where we can browse each other's pics, things like that instead of just a "survival" forum.
Might be appropriate for a separate thread there. I don't know...maybe vote for what kind of subforums we'd like to see. Don't want to badger him as if it's some emergency that has to be taken care of immediately, but Kevin said he's open to subforums, and he won't know what the members want if we don't tell him.

As someone who's been a mod to admin on other sites, the millions of sub-forums idea is never a good idea due to lack of traffic. I do however like Bushy's idea considering we're pretty much into the same kinda gear.

If ya just looking for reviews on outdoor gear like you mention then check out this site.It is British but most of the brands reviewed are available worldwide.

I agree, there do seem to be some not so WSS topics popping up, I'm sure I'm even guilty of it. The fact remains that I think a lot of us, myself included, look to this specific group of individuals for their specific feedback. In my mind that somewhat makes the topic WSS related... but that is besides the point, a WSS subforum or something of that nature where the "grey area" topics could be discussed among the WSS group would be great. That being said... as mentioned above, layer after layer of subforums would just get out of hand.

I do like the idea of the above mentioned hiking/camping forum, it might bridge the gap nicely. Seems like if we are pushing the boundaries of this forum in on direction or another, another might be in order better suited to such topics.

Anyhow. Ken, point understood.

One question? What is "survival" gear? AND, How do the mods decide it isnt, after 3 years here, one thing is for certain, we like to use anything we can, to make our kits fit our personal tastes.
I dont think moving gear discussion from WSS to Gadgets will do anything for my already BLAH feelings about WSS. I usually only want to check out other folks new ideas on gear...thats what I am into here.
If I have to read another thread on which knife is the best for the wilderness...I am gonna puke.
I dont know how all this happened (actually I do, someone questioned a mod, instead of letting our little section of BF stay off the radar) but, I like WSS just the way it is...yeah, I dont read every post, but spread the already thin amount of interesting threads around some more, and things are looking bleak in my opinion.

+1

I would like to stress this point, in fact. Sometimes it isn't about what you want to discuss but WHO you want to discuss it with. I talk to my best friend about things I wouldn't talk to my woman about and vice versa. I think we understand the parameters here but would like to ask the folks here what they think about something to get a specific perspective from like minded people. This is an unusual distinction and a very important one I think.

A camping/hiking forum may also have its boundaries pushed, but we generally follow the rule of thumb here. I'm not so sure there is a solution, outside blatant leniency. I am curious if fellow forumites or mods find it most disruptive. I certainly don't mind the occasional "odd" out of place opinion seeking post.

Spark is not going to create a new subforum based on votes. He will want to see how many threads cover a topic, to make it worthwhile having its own place.

Why not just keep it in W&SS? If a particular thread isn't interesting for you, please don't puke ... just move on. Thread titles that give a clue would help.

I understand the fellowship feeling: these are my best friends on BF, I want to ask them about my fiancee, my car, my history teacher. Right. Make a few friends outside W&SS and you may find those new friends include some of your best friends from here, too.

We aren't trying to break up a good thing. We are trying to keep each forum from becoming a miniature of Bladeforums as a whole. There is a reason for having separate forums in the first place. Use the particular emphasis of each as a strength, rather than trying to slip in something that doesn't fit.

Dont get me wrong guys, what I am saying is I like WSS just the way it is.
I dont really enjoy Opinion threads, cause, we all have one...and they will never be the same.
I love seeing folks newest toys and blades, and reading their intended purpose. I love seeing folks pics of adventures and hikes.
And, tutorials..we need more of them!!
I dont think splitting up WSS into sub-catagories is going to improve anything. I dont think there is enough content, to fill them. Nothing a couple of stickies cant solve.

I also like it JUST the way it is. However, it will be up to the people running this site.

I certainly don't mind the occasional "odd" out of place opinion seeking post.

But you're not the one moderating the whole forum are you? You may not mind it but we do. As Esav mentioned, there is a reason for having separate forums in the first place.

Sometimes it isn't about what you want to discuss but WHO you want to discuss it with.

If that's the case then take it to email. Stray out of W&SS every once and while and you may find that the topic you want to discuss may have already been started in the APPROPRIATE FORUM.

I'm a card carrying member of the "I really only post here club", I used to enjoy the energy and fellowship that WS&S had a couple of years ago. I think we lost some of that as a result of a series of a confusing posted guidelines as to what was appropriate to post here ,it had a chilling effect... I also think BF would need to do a lot of housecleaning before there could be meaningful discussion about any need for posting a thread in a specific forum. For example, will wilderness/survival skills be posted in ESEE or WS&S?, is it OK to post the same thread in both?, If I post a thread titled "Are SOG Powerpliers good for bushcraft?", aren't there at least three different appropriate sub-forums for that question? I think the goal should be to keep the users happy and have fun with it:thumbup:... Just my .02

I couldn't disagree more. Obviously, there are forums of a more general nature than this one. We come to bladeforums to associate with like-minded knife nuts. We come to the W&SS sub-forum to associate with like minded W&SS knife nuts. The key word is "like-minded".

Disagree all you want. The fact remains that if you post non-W&SS topics in that forum they will be moved. End of story.
