This is W&SS not "The Post Anything I Want Because I Only Read This Forum" Forum

Ok, ok, guess I'm a little late on this one. Jeez I don't visit for two days and a big controversy comes and goes like that! That's one of the reasons why I like this forum so much, it's active.

That's also why I usually don't get involved In these, I just end up coming in late and making an idiot of myself. Oh well such is my life... :)

don't mind me, I just like to randomly lash out every once in a while.

read twice, post once.

Glad you only read it. I had a great phone convo with Mr. Kalooch recently and among the many topics covered, his opinion of this forum was emphatically stated regarding this subforums direction.:D

He really means it. LOL!

BTW, how about those Packers?

Back up top with a reminder. I've been moving far too many non-W&SS threads into their appropriate forums. Too many general gear threads have been popping up that are once again straying from the true nature of the W&SS forum.

Please make every effort to ensure that you take the time to review your thread and place it in the appropriate forum.

I still say we need another subforum for general outdoors topics.
This forum could keep the threads oriented toward buschcrafting, plant ID, shelter building, other traditional skills, survival kits, and emergency gear.
Aside from being ways to get in a survival situation, threads about canoeing, kayaking, camping, hiking, backpacking, climbing, and related gear usually have about zero to do with survival. The only real option we have for those threads are community and G&G, so W&SS is already being used as the "general outdoor forum", anyway, and a lot of the content is technically off-topic(like 9 of 25 threads on page 1 right now, not including the 3 that have been moved).

Maybe a title change of the forum is needed.

The Great Outdoors Forum.

That would cover every topic that is in there now. Outdoor Gear could be a subforum of that forum. Outdoor Skills could be another.

If my understanding is correct, and correct me if it isn't, canoeing, kayaking, camping, hiking, backpacking, climbing, etc, are all examples of wilderness skills and activities. If the title of the forum is Wilderness & Survival Skills, you can't expect every thread to be strictly about bushcrafting and survival skills and gear. In my opinion, these skills belong here perfectly, and I see no issue with how W&SS has become a "general outdoor forum." I agree with Ken C's idea or a possible name change, but I still don't think its necessary for the reasons that Owen mentioned.

Owen, I mean absolutely zero offense, bud.

For what it's worth, if it weren't for the trip reports, discussions of camping, hiking, climbing, canoeing, etc., I wouldn't find this subforum particularly interesting. Don't get me wrong - I like the bushcrafting, ID, cordage, wilderness first aid etc. threads, and they are the core of the 'skills' aspect of the subforum. But it's seeing fellow knife enthusiasts' experiences outdoors that keeps me coming back.

sounds like a fantastic idea

I was thinking a "general wilderness/hiking/new gear" type subforum might be apprpriate....

after all, 99.999999% of us are NOT "surviving" in the "wilderness" everyday, instead we are experiencing it.

I dunno. I mean, we can have some balance here.

tactical pen? gadgets and gear. tazer flashlight? gadgets and gear. new android phone? gadgets and gear.

solo hiking bivy tent analysis for a 3 week appalachian run? dude. WSS.

New bugout bag design? WSS.

Here's the kicker. look at it from this angle- we could include more of the rest of the forum if our posts are a bit broader. instead of having to find today's or tomorrow's potentially different preferred forums for something that's marginal (like a bug out bag)

Best Idea proposed yet:thumbup:

Agreed. Gear info or questions about it should be in Gadgets & Gear and Survival Skills info in W&SS. Keep W&SS in it's intended form which is the advancement of skills.

The best idea I have seen so far.... I am sure it would reduce the mods work load also. We are 8 months into this and all we see is moved threads. It would also make less judgment calls to be upset over. .
Can you try this idea for awhile?

My advice would be to move Gadgets & Gear off the Community section and place it directly under W&SS.

^ this

I posted a thread wanting to compare folk's experience w/ two different saws (in a wilderness setting)- initially I got some very good feedback (while it was in W&SS) then none, once moved

I should have titled my thread "Comparo of Wilderness Saws" to avoid the move
