Thoughts on the Broken Skull

There are definitely other annoying logos and most of them are on knives that don't have nearly the bones this one does. Superficial issues aside, this looks to be one heck of a knife.

In other words, this knife is too good for the logo. I agree, it is.

But taking my personal childhood into the picture, its not too bad. Its a Cold Steel blade in collab with Stone Cold Steve Austin, WWF hero of the late 90s! I am very happy about this. Though the "Texas Rattlesnake" would be a far better name, by my reasoning.

Joke time:

Make a stonewash version. Stone(wash) Cold(Steel) Steve Austin.

They should have just called it the "Stone Cold" or something! I guess talking about the lettering on the side is pointless because it's already done. Like I said it looks like such a badass blade for such a great value that I'll be buying one regardless.

Quot'n m'self!:

Taking this into consideration, I'd bet it would be fairly easy to make G10 look like rattlesnake skin. I mean look what they did to the Colossus grip. Just a thought.

I'd buy a snake skin variety! Someone posted orange earlier:

The orange is looking pretty sweet, I'm going to try to find a way to get the clip side black. Sosa says I could dye it. With the orange, I would have to bleach it first, can you bleach G10?

What about Acrylic paint? I see your orange knife handle scale and I want to paint it black...

I could do this and use the clear coat acrylic to better seal it. It'll give it a nice sheen, too. I always look for the easy way out.

I have a sneaking suspicion it wouldn't take paint terribly well and would end up looking like crap. Rit dye is probably the way to go.

I'm down for an OD one for sure.... this has classic lines and that weight is deal closer for me.

Buy one orange and one black! Swap the scales.

Well folks have been sick of the whole tactical black G10 look CS perpetually offers, with lack of color options. Seems CS took it to heart and nixed it altogether with the BS <--- controversial abbreviation for Broken Skull.

Color options definitely attract attention...I think they offered (offer?) the recon 1 in green and brown g10 now too. Blactical does get old after a while. And yes I did trademark that word so don't even think about stealing it! ;)

I am looking forward to picking one up, I will say I like the various colour options but wish they offered satin as well, and some different blade shapes. I will be getting one not sure on color yet.

I really like the upgrades in steels Cold Steel is offering and I like a lot of their products. I also, realize that Cold Steel targets mostly tactical or defense oriented people. One of their latest offerings is the Broken Skull. I have been hammering on them for a long while (others have too) for new colors and they have listened. Cudos. The new Broken Skull will be offered in some very nice colors (love the blue and orange). However, for reason I cannot fathom, Cold Steel made the blades black with that ugly writing on the blade. This was the knife I was hoping for (I will know more when I see it), but it has that writing and black coating. Aesthetically, these just do not look nice. Plus, in today's legal environment, if you had to defend yourself, an over zealous prosecutor, building a reputation, would crucify you for using a knife with a name like Broken Skull, not to mention that it has it emblazoned in large letters on the black tactical blade. Come on Cold Steel. Give us a break.
Have you looked at the lone star hunter? I just posted a thread about it. They are discontinued but if you act fast you should be able to pick one up.

I think the Broken Skull looks great and I don't mind the name. I don't see why everyone is so upset about it.

I mean Cold Steel has names like the AK-47, the Marauder, the Warcraft series, and even has collaborations with Steven Seagal!

I didn't realize it's basically the same knife until recently. The LSH looks pretty cool. I wonder how it is in pocket because it looks kind of heavy. Have you seen some with custom scales?

For whatever reason none of those provoke in me the near-fatal eyeroll that Broken Skull does. It's cool if you dig it, but it just sounds profoundly adolescent to my ear. Still buying one, though.

There are a couple images on google with custom scales. I personally dont mind the faux stag for now although I might do some custom scales at some point. I will make them myself as its a pretty straight forward process. As for in the pocket, its quite comfortable. The weight isn't a factor for me and the slim, smooth contours make it more comfortable than a spyderco manix 2 or stretch when putting your hand in your pocket. Also the pocket clip design helps keep the knife toward the outside of the pocket rather than straight up and down like most knives creating more space in the pocket.

You could just strip the blade with some paint stripper, right? Or maybe duracoat/cerakote? Looks really neat I hadn't heard of these. As far as the over zealous prosecutor deal, that has happened and all, but I don't know how often it has actually worked. It just gets repeated a lot. I wouldn't worry about that aspect, life's too short. You could get the pink handled version if you're that worried and I'm sure said prosecutor wouldn't touch on its appearance one bit :)

No stripper on DLC coating. It's inert to most chemical u can find. The only way is to sand it off, but good luck with it, it's technically harder than the sandpaper. That's what's good about DLC coating, thin yet wear resistance, and has strong bonding with the metal underneath it.

The DLC on my CS Recon 1 is almost like bluing on gun metal vs the teflon coating so it does seem like it would be hard to strip.

DLC is not really a coating. It is a surface treatment where the material is molecularly bonded to the steel. That's why strippers and other chemicals don't work. If you want to sand it off, good luck. You have to sand down into the steel itself, until your past the treated layer.

I don't care for the lettering, or about WWE, but since Steve Austin is now apparently a knife designer, I guess it's just something we'll have to deal with if we want that particular knife.

BTW, the design doesn't seem particularly original or unique to me.
