Tim Wright - Takedown folder...

Thanks for asking.

That knife is sooooooo grogeous, and just simply elegant!! That take down knife is sheer genius!

No engraving. No gold. No gems.

Steel not titanium. No anodizing.

Nothing redundant.................. just what's needed.

A tool first and a work of art second. Meant to be used, which most never are. How sad....................

All Tim and that's saying a lot.

I've known him for many years and often spoken to him when he was agonizing over some miniscule, technical detail none of us would ever notice in a MILLION years, but Tim notices and he makes these knives to please himself first. If he's not pleased no one sees them............. Tim is an mechanical/metal artiste first and a businessman second. $2600 for one of these is stealing. My only regret is that he moved to Sedona, leaving Chicago behind about 10 years ago, but I look forward to seeing him and chatting with him whenever I can. and feeding him also. Maybe someday he will consent to allowing some of the unique tools he makes for himself to be photographed for the astonishment of all of us.

I asked Tim about marketing for the umpteenth time the other day and he said, " Why bother?" He only has so much time and a larger backlog of orders then he is comfortable with. Taking more orders would only ad to the pressure to attempt shortcuts that he refuses to consider, so enjoy the pictures Coop provides.................... Tim alluded during our conversation to a sweet deal he made with Mr. Cooper to swap work............ Lucky guy that Coop.

Syn: You are absolutely correct. I will add that Tim was one of the first knifemakers who befriended me when I got started. We have had many long conversations along the lines you mentioned-Hence my reference to "kicking his ass"<G> if he didn't make some more folders. I have returned to this thread many times since Coop started it. I am delighted to see a picture of Tim's work posted here-The man is obviously worthy of much praise, and it is good to see him getting some.

Every conversation I have heard from anyone regarding Mr. Tim, was included with the phrase 'Mad Genius' ;)

Syn, I can only imagine the crazy tooling that he has made. I hope you will capture some of that and share it.

:p Don't mean to brag, but I actually own the knife (#1) that is shown here and it feels good in the hand as well as looks good. Tim's work is second to none...maybe equal to a very few makers, but I could count them on one hand. Tim sells the knife for $2600, but I have already been offered $3000 and I told the guy to not even to bother on going higher...I ain't selling this work of art.

I have the pleasure of studying under Tim and Jim Corrado...and I should write a book on what I have learned.

Talk about Korn!!! I own #1 and #2 of this ones big brother and love it. Tim is a very special friend of mine and when I think he can't get any more anal, he proves me wrong...I think he is very proud of that ability...Tim just remember...The all seeing eye is always watching and you can't escape it!!!
All my best, Alex

Tim makes wonderful knives; you should try his kitchen tools, easy to sharpen, perfect for the job

Timothy Wright, knife maker, he also knows sharp, amazingly sharp.
Here are a few images I took while at the Ashokan Seminar

This folder was being taken to Chicago and given as a present to Tim's father.
When opened and locked, there is no blade play what so ever, when you press
the lock tab the blade swings freely down, the action is so smooth!
And the blade would tree top cut hair easily. Tim had a life as a shear blade
sharpener and he is most passionate about attaining a keen edge!

a shot showing Tim taking the knife apart, as Coop shown, held very securely
by only two screws!

and he is indeed witty, he's not related to the other Wright, as far as I know...:)

That knife is pure genius!! And it is absolutely gorgeous!! I hope one day, I CAN add one of Tim's knives to my collection!

Hi Gary,

A welcome addition to the post. Thanks for the photos!

Coop

Just to bring this one up for a look see, have a knife Tim made for my wife's uncle
a smallish bladed utility fixed blade knife, the only part on this knife that's sharp
is the edge, it's a high carbon steel blade, lovely workmanship on the bolster area.

blade is about 3 3/8" long with a handle that is 4 1/2" long
very comfortable handle style.

Just.... WOW! Look at that milled (?) maker's mark and the fit. Incredible.

Thanks, Gary. :)

Coop

Thanks Coop, and yes the fit is Wright all right ;)
He is such a perfectionist it isn't funny, this is the style of knife he personally
carrys, you should see his sheaths!
He only makes these occasionally I believe, between his folder work. My wife's
uncle and I got to see his knife at Ashokan and ordered one right then.
He also makes some very nice kitchen knives as well.

G2

That's a good way of putting it, Tim's execution is very cleanly done and well thought out.
of course his folders are even more exceptional, but these small fixed blades are just
sweet to use! excellent cutters, he uses a variety of steels too, this one is high carbon
and takes a very good edge, touched it up for my wife's uncle while it's visiting here this
week ;)

Great story Coop. Incredible knife. Tim's work has always been of the genius nature. Fitting great photos for a great knife. Enjoyed both thoroughly!!! Guess I'd have to sell half my collection to get one though.
