I wasn't attributing it to you, but there has been speculation in the past (among cooks in particular) that adding the oil will lower some sort of surface tension or something making it less likely to boil over. I don't know about all that, I just use a GIANT pot and it's no problem.
When I was making pasta at the GLIB bug in I used a 20 qt stock pot and a turkey fryer burner.
