Tip up or down?

I'm not a huge fan of pocket clips in general but my thoughts....tip up for sure.

IMO, For a right handed person, there is only one place for a clip on a folder that makes sense: the back/lock side at the butt end of the knife. This makes it tip up.

1. The blade is against the seam/corner of the pocket so it can't open easily on accident.

2. Knife is oriented so there is minimal adjustment in hand to open/deploy and use.

3. That's the only spot on the knife where the clip is relatively out of the way for comfort during use.

Yeah I really don't appreciate having the clip up by the pivot, it just sucks ergonomically

My GOD

have you any idea how many threads exist on this topic?

If you UTFSF you would!

It took me one minute to compile that list, and I'm sure there are more. UTFSF!
So which is it for you ?

That was the OP question !

The knives I carry at this point are exclusively tip up. I've had them the other way, but I've had a higher incidence of fumbling with a knife that was tip down. And my favorite makers these days (CRK, SHF) are all tip up only.

for me its always tip up, ether right side or left pocket carry , but I always seem to have my pocket knife on me, vary hard habit to brake ...

Just when you thought it was safe to eat cornflakes....

Boombats, sometimes people just want to engage with the current community rather than read past discussions. I advocate showing a little more friendliness and community mindedness towards them instead of antagonism.

Do you carry your modern knife with the tip up or down, why?

It's a good question, but calls for other questions to dial in a good answer, particularly (for me) what size is the knife, and which pocket is it carried in? You have received some good answers already, and here is my answer.

For me, the pocket the knife is carried in is one factor that affects optimal clip placement. I like my knives in rear pockets tip down. I don't carry front or side pocket any more, except in track pants. But because the track pants are loose enough, when I take the knife out, I sort of pull the knife a little rearward in order to get a good grip. Length of the knife handle also. I like larger blades, like the Resilience, which is my main EDC folder, and I find that with the clip tip down, ergos are not compromised much if any.

My Tenacious, which is my secondary EDC folder, gets carried in my left cargo pocket, to the right of my phone. Truth be told it serves more to keep my phone vertical than anything, and it doesn't really get used much. Strange, I know. But, when I do use it, tip down is easier to deploy the knife and open with minimal adjustment required. Not so with tip up.

With tip up, on the other hand, I have to adjust my grip for both knives. And when I change the clips to deep carry, that changes from "ergos are not compromised much if any" to "ergos are hands down better than all ways except clipless". Again for my knives, in my hands, how I use them. So they are better for me like this than any other way:

Oh hey, I asked because my third knife, a Tenacious came tip down and I found that odd. Sorry if your feathers got ruffled, I just got this and was curious. No, I had no idea how many times or who posted in the past. I guess you never got your first of anything new.

Tip up but only because that’s how my mnandi rides best against my wallet in the bottom of my pocket.

Relax everyone, I was just feigning outrage, but I guess it was a little too dry for y'all. But it is good forum etiquette to use the search function, partly to reduce clutter and partly because there is a wealth of perspectives and experience that just gets swept under the rug when people create redundant threads.

Although it has already been discussed ad nauseam, I'll just reiterate that the issue for me is that the knife rests towards the back seam of the pocket, rather than towards open pocket where it has potential to partially deploy and expose the blade in pocket. In most cases, right pocket carry for example, that is tip up, so that's what I go with. For left pocket carry, adjust accordingly; and there are other types of pockets like overalls and pants with tool pockets where it is less important.

Years ago, when carrying a knife tip down in my right pocket, I looked down and noticed a slash in the outside of the pocket. I didn't notice when it happened, or notice exactly how it happened, but it was enough to swear me off of that type of carry (as well as that knife).

I should add that my stance on things like this is likely shaped from the experience of being in a life altering car accident in my mid 20's when simply travelling the 3-4 miles from my house to my mom's. Since then I've always been hyper cognizant of thing like this, where items we don't think about could prove injurious in extreme (however unlikely) situations. Similarly, I can't stand the idea of people stowing heavy items in the back of SUV's unsecured.

I will also say that this issue is what stopped me from carrying a folding Karambit daily, where my preferred method of use is left hand/reverse grip. In this instance my carry was actually tip up, but since it was in the left pocket that was the wrong way for me.

I understood the sentiment; it does seem like an "age old" question that comes up rather frequently - and maybe not in this case, but the same questions get rehashed, instead of the OP just doing some research instead of creating yet another thread.

I am typically in the camp of tip up, as mentioned blade against the seam of the pocket; no issues with access or accidental opening. If I need a blade NOW, that is my fixed blade anyway. The only exception I can think of would be the rare occasion in which I have an OTF onboard.
