Tip up or down?

It's funny, because from the tone of your post, that is what some people thought you needed to hear. ;)

I was just feigning outrage,

Your post contained all the telltale signs of outrage, none of the signs of feigning it. A little emoji goes a long way.

is this going to turn into a "NO U MAD" thread or are we gonna talk about the diverse spectrum of options between Tip Up and Tip Down?

Just to leave the reasoning why I never carry tip down.

The knife (Benchmade Aphid) didn't accidentally deploy while I was drawing it. It partially deployed while it was in my pocket somehow. When I reached into my pocket to grab my keys, I could feel the tip of the knife against my hand. I was partially spiked by the blade, but realized what was happening right away. I slowly took my hand out of my pocket and removed the knife. I'm lucky the blade didn't deploy any farther while in my pocket as it could have cut my leg or something else and injured me seriously.

I never carried that knife or any other tip down knife again. Since I carry my knives in my right front pocket, the blade is against the seam of my pocket. That prevents the blade from deploying while in my pocket.

To me there is. I've never had a tip up knife deploy accidentally. I've had a tip down knife do so and I was almost seriously injured by it.
Of course. Because you’ve said “To you…” Same is valid “…to me…” To me tip up is preferred method of carrying folding knife for reasons already mentioned on page 1, and I agree w you. :D

toker toker Man you’re replaying to a post that I accidentally directed to another forum member.
‘My post is down because I realized I made mistake. I did address your post already.

Tip down is the correct way, you just pull it out of your pocket ready to open. With tip up, you have to choke up before you can reach the thumbstud, especially with medium or larger blades. I refuse to buy any more tip up only knives over ~3".
This. Less repositioning of the hand before deployment of the blade.

To be honest: Spyderco's Military is a "tip-down" knife. But it's such a large beast; that it doesn't matter. You will always have to adjust your grip on it: after shaking it free from your jeans.

I carried a Millie for several month, with a deep carry clip. Right rear pocket, almost as far forward in the pocket as it would go (but not quite, so that the jimping wouldn't snag). I could deploy and open it lightning fast with no need to pause and adjust my grip. I carry my Resilience the exact same way.

I tried a deep-carry clip...
I couldn't grab enough of the knife, to pull it out reliably. With the OEM clip; I found it easier to draw...
You must have some big paws! 👍

Not really if you think about it… You pull the knife out of your pocket with the two fingers you will most likely use for operating the thumb-stud or to flip the hole. This is not “less repositioning”
You have to bring the knife up, where your hand rotates and you can grip the handle, reposition and open the blade.
With tip up, you can use fob. It gives you the ability to pull the knife basicaly with your pinkie and ring finger, when your other fingers are gripping the body of the knife when it clears the pocket.
This way your grip require less positioning, your thumb is free to push the stud and if you keep the knife right there, instead bringing it up, the gravity helps you with opening the blade, and you don’t show everybody that you have a knife in your hand.

I personally prefer to use fob with the deep pocket clip.
in most cases I have a shirt or other clothing over the pocket so it doesn’t really matter
if the fob will stick out or non-deep pocket clip will show out. It give me enough purchase area at the pomel to draw and keep it close to the body if I need it for something else other than utility work.
Plus, I like to wave those knives so I don’t even bother with thumb openings and flipping
For me wave requires tip up, this is the end of the story for me.
‘Of course I have also tip down only knives, but they are just compromise with some of my principles

It is still slow… as I said - you’re bringing the knife up and reposition you hand David.
im not thinking about it, I’m talking from experience but again - you have to have fob on the tip up,
‘regardless waved or not…
