Tired of Spyderco Lack of QC

I have the problem with off-centered blades on almost all of my Spyderco knives, too. If you ask me, Spyderco doesn't know how to center blades. I've had more than 20 Spydercos over the past few years, and I think 80% of them have had off-centered blades.

Of the 7 Spydercos I have right now, only 2 of them have centered blades.

So I kind of feel like I'm in the same boat as you: everyone around me claims that they have 6000 Spyderco knives, and not one of them has a problem, yet I have some kind of cosmetic issue with nearly every one I get.

In all, it's not a big deal to me. I'd just like to see Spyderco improve the quality of their knives.

Perhaps I'm not as critical as you are with my knives... And it really makes me curious about my knives. Did I really get that many good knives or did I overlook the small stuff? I'm going to have to go over them once again.

eeeesh...

Sorry to hear about the bad news cviz. Did you expect to get blasted this way?

I do not know what to tell you about your luck. I have not bought anything in the past month or two, but what I got before that time was pretty good. I have had many knives show up nearly perfect and later developed an off center blade (mainly Militaries (G-10, Ti, and Ti/G-10), Enduras (FRN and G-10), and Delicas (FRN and G-10)). In every case I can "straighten" the blade (handles) with some fairly minor adjustments.

I realize some cases are worse than others and can not seem to be straightened by the owners...perhaps you have received a few examples?

I feel bad that you got some poor examples of what I feel Spyderco routinely delivers...I also feel bad that you are getting blasted for complaining about it, but that happens I guess.

Perhaps there is something to these suggestions that your dealer may have a hand in this?

Do what works best for you. If you enjoy other products better, then by all means buy them... I won't hate you for it.

I have to agree with RevDevil and as I said before you need to look at your dealer and not so much at Spyderco QC. Yes, some knives do get through that are bad in one way or another but Spyderco will fix it. Mr. Glesser would not be on this forum and communicate with fans of his knives if he did not truly care about the product he puts out and the people who own them.

Amazon bro, stay away from them. Nothing but trouble with knives because they do not have the knowledge to maintain and look after their inventory...:thumbdn:

This man belongs on the CRK forum. Have fun with your new Sebenza.

Nope they don't like me there either because I told them I didn't like my new large 21 and that Chris Reeve, unlike Sal, doesn't listen to his customer base.

I loved and still love 2 Spydercos that I have right now. But I've had problems with several of them, which I described in detail and I just can't handle the disappointment after disappointment. I suppose I think that QC has been going downhill but that may not be the case? I don't know. I'll get a satisfactory Military G-10 in S30V plain edge and my Spydercos will be over.

I'll be very happy with my Centofante 3, Endura 4 G-10, and a Military (oops forgot my new "mega beater": Resilience). There's lot's of other knives to buy out there gents and 4 Spydercos is a repectable showing, don't you think? :)

I like Spyderco, Sal is a class act, who has bothered to answer questions for me via PM. I love the knives, the creative concepts, the new exotic steels, there's so much to like about Spydercom but I always seem to get a boned up model and it's been getting worse lately, (I've sold & traded some in the past that I should have kept).

What's the good IMO to get all jazzed up for a new model or a replacement of one that's been gifted or sold and get a real clunker for higher prices now?

As far as getting beat down? That's okay, at least the beaters are leaving some poor guy alone who can't take it as well. I didn't expect a warm welcome, but I did expect some others would have had the same issues. Must be BAD luck, everyone else is having great luck. :D

Seems to me you need to find a good brick and mortar store with a good selection of Spyderco's. This way you can take the "luck"out of it.

That's the first time I've heard that.

After speaking with Chris Reeve personally, I can assure you he is listening to the fans. In his case, he just chooses not to respond to every complaint.

Sal does an exceptional job in this department and should be commended

My newest Para2 has a couple of slight defects (dings on both liners probably due to a mistake in fabrication and a mark on the g-10) but nothing to really piss me off because this knife is going to be a user. As a buyer of both Benchmade and Spyderco, I can say neither company is perfect and defects are going to happen occasionally. In my opinion you've got dealer problems. Try GP Knives next time, they have awesome prices, fast shipping, great customer service and will inspect each knife you purchase to your specifications before they ship... Can't beat em' IMHO! :)

My cf stretch and spyderhawk off center hawk so bad it rubs frn going down . Milie ti,xhp manix endura zdp ,bradley ,delica vg10 grey frn all good no complaints

That's a nice way of putting it.

Josh K we've been there already in the "poll thread." You been geting around this forum and seeing what others are writing about CRK and how out of touch they're getting with the times and customer's desires?

I think he does what he wants and the h*ll with it. That's fine with me, it's not my company.

Have a wonderful Spyderco day guys, I just put a mirror finish on my Resilience and push cut 2 large boxes to smithereens with that big old thing.

It takes a very keen edge and it still shaved my arm afterward. It's a keeper. Blade's almost touching the liner but the price was right.

I've had opportunity to watch salespeople at work, and sometimes, when you've worn out your welcome and they don't want your business anymore, they get creative in ways to discourage your further patronage. Some people never get the message though when naivete and karma collide.

Luck shouldn't be a factor in the first place, imho.

People like to blame shoddy QC on 'luck'..."Oh, you got a defective knife - that's just bad luck, and there's nothing wrong with the company you bought it from." For a knife to be able to pass QC, it shouldn't have any major problems, right? If a knife with major problems passes a company's QC, something is wrong with the company's QC, not just with the luck of the person who ends up buying it. Alternately, as some folks said, it's possible that there's something amiss with the dealer (ex: perhaps said dealer sent cziv a knife which had been used previously and subsequently returned), in which case there's probably a problem with the dealer.

I'm not saying that's necessarily the issue here, but some of you folks are acting like it's flat-out impossible that this guy has a legitimate concern about his spyderco knives, or that spyderco may have shipped out a defective knife. Sorry, but no-one (and no company, for that matter) is perfect - it's entirely possible that this dude's concerns are well-founded.

Just my $0.02.

I don't consider an off center blade on the liner and frame lock spyderco's an issue. I haven't had one yet that couldn't be corrected in 5 minutes. I've owned probably close to 20 spyderco's and the only one that even had a mark at all was the Lum Chinese from Japan. It also had the clip screws strip out the first time I carried it but spyderco sent me new ones, I loctited them in and problem solved.

I don't know what to tell you Chuck, I really feel for you because it seems like you want to like Spyderco but just can't. Personally it's my favorite knife co. by leaps and bounds and I'm picky as can be. I've sent knives back to Case and Queen and would love if they had QC like Spyderco.

I agree with what Dorito is saying. But to have almost every Spyderco be so screwed up makes me think that something else besides luck and Spyderco's QC is the cause. I know not every knife put out is immaculate, but this seems way above and beyond. That really sucks for cviz.

Where are these knives coming from? This forum, an online retailer, B&M store? I'm really curious, not trying to flame any store or pass the buck from Spyderco's QC.

Well considering that it's a resilience, im not too surprised. Its made in china! I know that some of the stuff coming from there is ok, but i tend to just avoid it for that reason. Go for some us or japanese made spydercos or some us made benchmades, and you will enjoy the quality. It's not really a spyderco thing, more of where theyre made. China knives = bad

Whenever I hear about stripped screws, it sets off an alarm for me. I have never stripped a screw or had a stripped screw on a Spyderco.

I'm not saying you did it, but someone tinkered with the knife. It's doubtful Spyderco QC would send out a knife with a stripped screw. It amazes me when people don't know how to turn a screw or use the proper tool to prevent stripping it.

As far as centering, i would only worry about it if the blade contacts the scale.

I disagree. I get first pick at my local brick and mortar store, often getting to open the packages before actual employees. I have seen:

1 manix 2 with the top clip screw completely sheared in half. (I bought it anyway)

And 2 military's with stripped screws holding the scales on. And that's not out of hundreds of knives. That's out of around 50 I've personally checked out at that store.
