For the lovers of The Cowboy Way:
Kinda funny how things go. I hadn't made a pair of shotgun chaps for a little over a year. They were for my son, a working cowboy in north eastern NV. Prior to that pair it'd had been quite a while, maybe 3/4 years since I'd built shotguns not counting a couple of pair of woolies.
Eight degrees this morning in NV:
Anyhoo ya know how famous people die in threes? Well shotgun chaps must be like that too. Cause I got three orders all in a row. Did these all in a month or so in between other projects and knife batches. Use to be I'd make these for $150-$200 depending on fancy they were. But that shows ya how long I've been making leggings cause nowadays they start bout $650 (usually two sides of leather) and clearing $800 not uncommon depending on tooling, pockets etc. First pair were a little different in that they have whats called an armitas top or apron.
This next pair has flower carved yokes. My wife Nichole does most of our flower carving and she did these yokes. The customer had chosen the same color leather as the first pair, butter.
This kind of pocket is called a welt pocket. The interior of the pocket actually curves to the outside so that whats being carried sits on the outside of the leg not on top. More comfortable that way and ya can carry bigger things. My son carries a folding saw.
Cuff detail:
This last pair was a little different in that the customer chose rust colored leather and I tooled his brand on the yokes:
No more shotguns on the horizon but I have two pair of chinks (short chaps) to do.
