On a more serieus note: how much bottles have you tried? It happens more than once that you (especially if you taste a lot) get a 'bad' bottle. Don't know why this happens, maybe something with the yeast or so. It happens with many brands. F.e. Maredsous seems to have this problem from time to time, a bad bottle in the batch. It just happens from time to time.

Or, it just might not be your taste.

Could be, not sure really. I had a sampler pack. Had a blue label, yellow and a red I believe. Awful pretty , even came with a fancy glass. Just wasn't my thing.

Blue is the best the bunch though. It does have a very specific taste, indeed. I'm a sucker for dark (trappist) beers though :-)

Edit: all this talk about beers is getting me thirsty. It won't be for this evening since I'm taking pills at the moment, but maybe tomorrow... I might just go to the supermarket to pick up some Chimay Blue. Or Westmalle Trappist. Or St. Bernardus Abt 12.
Or whatever I'm aching for :D

I did not get a chance to try the Chimay Blue yet, perhaps tonight with some Cajun food. So far, I like the Westmalle best then the Chimay Triple. After I try the Delirium Tremens, my small sampling of Belgian beers will be gone and I'll have to see if another store has a bigger selection.

I've had these scales glued up for about 6 months and finally got some shop time (and insight on how-to) to start shaping up my BK16 Fatty handles. So far, I'm pleased with how it's going. Taking my time, for sure, and doing all the shaping by hand with a rasp and shop roll sandpaper. Yeah, my pinning job is pretty bad, but I've learned what not to do...

so our local outdoors store no longer sells firesteels, etc. because not enough people buy them.

I went in to pick up a new one for a custom sheath i have comin in the near future but i guess im gonna have to get it online.

What kind of pins are those Mrn8? Those handles look good so far too, what kind of wood?

I'm a big fan of double-cut files for shaping wood handles. Get a nice sharp half-round, you'll be delighted.
Then get a single-cut to clean up the mess (flat is ok). Then sandpaper - 100, 180, 280, 360.
Great progress so far.

The pins are micarta. I should have gone with stainless...live and learn. It's spalted elm.

Thanks, I will need to get some files. So far I've used a rasp and 50 grit sandpaper.

since you mention it, any suggestions on cleaning files? I found an old half-round in the shed this afternoon but its loaded up with woodshavings and some other indistinguishable materials all gunked up in it.

Oh, you're glad you used micarta. repeat after me: "I'm glad I used micarta."

Stainless pin stock is SO MUCH HARDER than wood (and micarta) that it's near impossible to sand them flush and very hard to polish them to a nice sheen. Materials with matched hardnesses are waaay better to work with in this case.
Brass also works, but is closer to micarta or stabilized wood than natural wood. I bet those micarta pins become a nice matte black when you reach 360-600 grit.
Good choice.

a "file card". $4.

Remember that files are actually 'knives' of a sort. Lots of little teeth, and unsharpenable. If it's rusty it's dull, and dull knives are miserable to use. A fresh, new file sings through metal, and is a veritable force in wood and micarta. Eventually they wear out and you replace them. The metal can be annealed and recycled as it's a hardenable tool steel, but before you decide to make a knife out of a file, go read all the stickies in Shop Talk.

Picked up some mink oil for all my leather needs!

I wonder how many minks had to die to make this stuff :D

none, they're renewable. You just squeeze 'em dry and then give them a couple months to recover on a fatty diet. Guilt-free leather dressing. You heard it here first.
