TOPS Knives

I think they are a company that has good intentions but focus on cool instead of functional. For mass produced CNC production techniques they do not pass the manufacturing savings off to the consumer. Our mouths would drop to the floor if we ever found out what a single knife cost to produce compared to what they sell them for. I am always leary of a company that has a non transferable warranty. If the product is good who cares who owned it first. It still has your name on it.

I find it interesting that of the pictures posted, particularly from people who "love their Tops" that none show any wear whatsoever. It makes me wonder how at least these individuals can laud the product without even using it. At the least, it only partially answers the original poster's question. I didn't think there was much of a collector market for these either, but maybe I'm wrong. My $.02.

It does seem that most of the TOPS fanboys I've seen/know are mostly mall ninjas. I'm not knocking you gents that do have multiple TOPS knives because if they work for you, so be it. Some of their designs are way over the top and I don't understand what all the excess holes and features of the blades are for, yet on the other hand the Blue Otter, Sky Marshall, big Steel Eagle with sawback (thick 1095 machete with sawback? WIN!) and a few other knives have really caught my eye. I guess the only way I am going to base an opinion on these knives is to buy one, it would just be nice to have some reliable input before I drop a hundred bucks on a knife and these reviews seem to be all over the place.

Well since you "quoted" a post from 2.5 years ago. Then based your reply on that 2.5 year old post. I can tell you I have had knives from tops well inside that time period and as far as I am concerned they have only become better at what the do. Oh and I'm no "Mall Ninja" thank you. ;) I can tell you I prefer the "Tops" folders most, out of the lineup they offer @ persent. Now that I am back to work, I am currently looking to purchase another CQT Thunder Hawke. A great all round hard use folder! IMHO....

Still a valid question. New to the forums and actually used the search feature instead of spamming more new ones. I never said you were a mall ninja, I said it seems like most TOPS fanboys ARE-and I think a good chunk of you would agree with me saying so, especially The Hunted wannabe crowd. Jeez, I guess I won't bother with the search engine anymore-you guys are all necro haters. I'm fine with my 11 dollar Kabar Warthog folder for EDC, I'm not a huge fan of folders in general.

Relax "PR" I was just having some fun with you. Hence the the big grin :D. You did good using the search. Most newbies do not... I did not mean to offend. And welcome to BF! :D ~Kevin~

:)

I think TOPS has some interesting designs... under that pile of horrible ninja whatnot trash. Pocket axe? Give me a break!
I was getting one of their smaller blade until they slammed the final nail to their coffin by their punisher the movie prop knife, as if tracker wasn't enough. XD

nothing like a fresh from the grave zombie thread!

anyway, my review of TOPS. I bought a moccasin ranger, mostly because i liked the way it looks. Turns out that the blade design is really not that good. It's very thick at the spine, then has a hollow grind. I used it to cut some drywall and the coating flaked off in a little spot about 2mm past the tip. The linen micarta is nice for a handle but very thick, and the moccasin ranger doesn't have any sort of guard so i'm kind of afraid of my hand slipping off. I much prefer a trailmaster or recon scout.

Interesting thing is... people complained about Tops Knife to be expensive but just few people complain about BUSSE knifeTag!!!
I KNOW something between a limited edition and INFI that make twice more expensive sometimes even three times than TOPS;)

Many things factor in - reputation and status symbol among them.

I dont like the tacticool look of most tops knives. Don't look that functional too me. I will stick to my rats and BRKT :)

I dont know if I want to judge on looks, but they have some knives on their site that are about 1.25" wide (max) and only about 2/3 of the width is sharpened. Lets say 3/4" for fun. Not gonna be a real acute edge even with a standard hollow grind. Don't get me wrong, it could be just sharper than sharp, but if you try to cut some of that real heavy 3 or 4 layer cardboard, I bet it will jam up like nobody's business

I couldn't agree more.
the only thing they really good at are...being tough.like a chisel.
but for cutting, something a knife is functionally made for,
no .most knifebrands do better than Tops.

If you want a small pry bar they make it, if you want a thinner knife that cuts they make that too (look at the thickness not all are 1/4). TOPS knives are of very good quality and have a amazing HT on their 1095 (I hear the same person does RATS ;)) though some of the designs are a little off the wall they do make a knife for about everything.

Me and my brother both have a small TOPS fixed blade and I also have the thunder hawke folder. Their folders are on the same level of quality and I don't know about others but mine has the smoothness of a benchmade. However there is one thing that keeps me from carrying it and that would be the pocket clip, I don't like low ride and I just think they could have done a bit better job in its design. You hear a lot of people say that its too much $$$ for the materials used but last time I checked quality trumps materials most of the time, its not hard to think of other companies that use "cheap steel" and charge a premium.

Moderators should ban all resurrected old posts !!

My EDC is the Thunder Hawke Hunter. Made for TOPS by FOX of Italy. Fit and finish couldn't be better ! N690Co blade with Ti and G10 handles .After using it for many things for a while, the blade is like 154CM. I'm completely happy with it. Shop around for good prices.

I've been EDCing my TOPS Shango since I got it. :) But DAMN this is an old thread! :D
