Touchy subject Folders & Survival

If I was stuck with my edc's in a survival situation I'd be fine with it, all folders. But I would prefer my camping rig, not all folders.

I carry a buck ag 110 almost every day, and think that it would perform fine. Just use it properly and don't try batoning and prybar type work that seems so popular. Which by the way I've never seen a a real need for before. Any decent folder around 4" should be good for temporary survival.

up untill i came on board and learned more about knifes I done all my backpacking and most of my hiking with a Buck 110 and never felt like i needed anymore. Yea now i carry a fixed blade on me. But that Buck is still there.I never had to batton anything with it. I used it to cut and sometime just play with some wook making things.. A Wave for me would cover 85% of everything i need.

Since I was old enough to have a knife , I have tried to always carry the one/s I can really rely on in a bad situation , survival has been my reason for carrying in the first place .

In most modern situations, almost always what you have on you is a folder unless you are intentionally out in the bush doing those sort of things. So when something unexpected happens, your folder is what you're equipped with.

Also, carrying a fixed bladed knife, even where legal, usually draws unwanted attention, while almost any folder seldom does.

Of course I would prefer a fixed blade. They're generally more comfortable for extended use besides the obvious stronger build. But I always have a SAK Hiker and the BM Doug Ritter, so I wouldn't be too out of sorts if I had to do with just those two.

A SAK and a Buck 110 is all I had before I got onto the larger knife scene. I made it work for what I needed it to. Now that I had have larger fixed blades I prefer them over folders unless I'm a place that doesn't allow it. Then it's the old 110 and SAK/LM Wave combo again.

Just watched the movie The Edge again, and thought i'ed ask the question. Would "YOU" feel at a disadvantage in a survival situation with just a folder (your choice any type) instead of a fixed blade sheath knife i've noticed since i started reading this forum that there are a bunch of guy's that have much more bush skill than I. and some that seem to go almost ballistac at the sugestion of a folder as opposed to a large chopper.now dont get me wrong I prefer a sheath knife my self but if I got dumped in the boonies like Anthony Hopkins barring injury i think i would do ok what say you all :D

Just the fact that most conversations start with the terms 'disadvantage' and 'just a folder' would make me think that people generally agree that there is one. For me; there is a disadvantage. Everything I can do with a folder I can do with a fixed blade - but not the oposite. I would definiately feel at a disatvantage with a folder just like I would feel even more at a disatvantage with neither. I always carry at least a Falkniven neck knife and a Leatherman. I practice with both styles of knife - and I also pratiice with none.

I EDC a leatherman wave and a BM AFCK, I would be comfortable stranded with either, however if someone gave me a choice I would choose a fixed. Chris

I would feel at an immense disadvantage if I only had a folder with me, but I'd sure as heck rather have a folder (probably a SAK Ranger) than not have anything at all. Give me a good 3 - 5" fixed blade, and I'll be happy. I don't need anything larger than that, but it's always a bonus if I can have a load of other tools from large chopper knives to inflatable rafts. :D

I absolutely never carry "tactical folders." The only folding style knives I carry with any frequency are SAKs. But almost always I will have a small to medium sized fixed blade with me. Yes, it's technically (technically, because LEOs really don't care unless you do something inappropriate with it) illegal here in Finland, but then again, so is carrying a folder. ;)

OK , Im gunna be the sucker and ask , what do you all do with your fixed blades that would buggar up a folder ?

Why Im asking is because I have used / abused my folders ( the most basic of folder too I guess ) with no problems for years in hunting / camping , and yeah , a couple of " survival" / close call situations , and the things I did with them then didnt differ that much at all from what I do normally ..

I would prefer a fixed blade, but feel comfortable and confident with a folder, which is what I would end up if I couldn't get my hands on a gear bag. My choice and everyday carry is a Victorinox OH Trekker that's issued equipment in the German army.

For 99.9% of everything that you're going to do in the field, the main advantage of a small fixed blade over one of the stronger, well made folders isn't strength but the fact that the fixed blade is a bit easier to clean if you get gunk all over it.

A few advantages of a folder is better concealment and portability, legality in may jurisdictions, and the fact that you really don't need a sheath for one.

Since Murphy smiles at our best laid plans, more that likely we'll have to depend on our edcs Select them well with the thought our life may depend on our edc(s).

Heck no
I'd die just as fast with a fixed blade as a folder, or even no knife for that matter.

Yeah, but you have to admit that you would feel more comfortable dying with your favorite knife (fixed or folding) in your hand than with nothing. I mean, bleeding out is tough enough to face without doing it barehanded.

And then there is this: When you are eventually found, would you rather them say "Oh look! He had a really neat knife!", or "Poor bloke. Not even a little SAK on him. Terrible way to go, just terrible!" :D
