Man, I love this event!!! Folks, if you want to come down and hang out with the Fiddleback crew, this is when and where to do it!

I went last spring and it was an absolute hoot! I had never met anyone there before and everyone was welcoming and very, very friendly. Just a bunch of folks standing around talking knives and hammering metal. I'm hoping to swing it again this spring.

I've been looking forward to it for years! It'll be great to meet everyone who makes it.

Man....it's a long hike from Bolivia, Condor! Hope you got good boots.

What??? all those pretty pics and not one of my "singing" anvil!

Andy's blowing smoke.....but I do have fun. It is a special time for most of us and not just when we're striking hot metal.

Don't be afraid to attend, as you can see we don't vet the participants or visitors. However, if you participate.......there's that tattoo thing that gets a little flinchy.

Going to make this one and got the same campsite as last time. Can't wait. My Dad is coming to this one as well but had to get a cabin offsite.
See you all soon.
Greg

I need to make reservations, but a bump is in order. Do not miss this one if you can make it.

Wish I had more pictures, but this one will have to do.

It leads to pushing you to be a better knife person and next thing you know, you say, I can do this...

Great people, great times.

just a bump to say get off the fence. This is an AWESOME thing. You'll learn so much in 48 hours that you will take on projects like this:

Which will allow you to make things like this:

And have stuff like this in your garage -- Don't drink the pint of canola oil-- it's the quench tank warming up on the preheater panel :barf:

And if this doesn't make you smile then....

Seriously, Last year I drove something like 10 hours to get there and I'm doing it again this year. Great people, Great site, Great times!!!!

I've got my site reserved. Going to be my first time. Bringing my boy Luca as well. Can't wait!

So...how does the "Iron in the Hat" event work? What should I bring to contribute?

Tony

This looks like such a cool event! I live in AZ, so I will not be attending this year. However, next year...

Great question! It's basically a big table where people put stuff that when your ticket get picked you can pick from the table. Kind of a raffle where you get to pick your prize. Tickets were something like 10 for 20 bucks or the like. Since the material was donated and the tickets were reasonable, everyone was a winner.

I put an extra Boker sharpening stone that I had picked up along the way on some super sale that was such a good deal that that I bought all three regularly priced at 30.00 each for for five bucks or something... There was lots of handle materials. There was a few stacks of old magazines. There was several materials like a damascus blank or a 5100 bearing trace. Basically, it's anything that you have kicking around your shop that you may have extra or start of a project you never started. Then, it's like a giant raffle. Lots of tickets and basically everyone is a winner. They go to great lengths to make sure that the "newbies" get something. I mean, I've got 19 projects in progress, so if given the choice between a 20th project and allowing a new guy to get a stash of Aldo's 1084, then I may say, "I've got ticket 1187, I've already got what I wanted, so give a newbie a chance at the table---"

This year, I'll be thinking about bringing stuff like:
-Extra bar of 1084
-Sharpening stones I never use
-Handle material I got in trade that I'll likely not use for a few years
-Set of ball peen hammers I got at Lowes on super sale.
-Some old forged wrenches that I picked up at a thrift store to make into knives that I know I'll never get around to this decade.

Last year I got some cool handle scales (osage orange) and some other material.

I've got my site reserved. Going to be my first time. Bringing my boy Luca as well. Can't wait!

So...how does the "Iron in the Hat" event work? What should I bring to contribute?

Swonut - Get some metal sheeting between that forge and the wood base/table or eventually you are going to need a fire extinguisher. Lot of other flammables pretty close to hot stuff, police the area. Also we need to talk about quench containers, temps and volume. What you got there is a little scary. Not picking on you brother, but lots of folks viewing need to know that safety comes first.

Close on the ITH - here's the dirt: tickets 1/$1 - 6/$5 - 12/$10, please make sure anything you bring will have usefulness to someone else - no junk/trash please. Best practice is to scan the table prior to the drawing and know what you want (usually so you can watch someone else pick it up one or two calls ahead of you.....). It's all fun and some very nice plunder can be had if your luck holds. Proceeds go toward fuel/materials/supplies used at the event. Any left over rolls over to the Custom Knife Raffle proceeds which are sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis.

I will post a pic of the Knife to be raffled in the morning. Tickets are 1/$10. Drawing will be held after lunch on Sat. before the ITH event. There will be a $400 reserve on the knife, which if not met will roll over to the Fall Trackrock event (purchased tickets will remain viable until drawing then).

Glad you new guys are coming, look forward to meeting all of you. Lets have some fun!
