I will have to check my Liadou’s with juniper. I have a Spanish knife where the juniper started to crack a little, look at that too. What would box wood look like? Is that box elder?
I think mine look ok, my one that had a hairline crack is a Spanish Cudeman Delta. Not my pic but just for reference, the hairline is near the pin on the bottom.

Some of you may recall that I landed a Le Liadou in particularly attractive Juniper with all kinds of whorls and figuring. Couple of days back I díscovered a nasty crack in the end part of the knife's slabs, going to the pin. Also, I begun to see the Juniper profoudly shrinking away from the liners/end leaving unleasant rough surfaces.

As it has lifetime gurantee I e-mailed them about this and got a very sympathetic and professional reply from Nicolas. He did say that the Juniper is not stabilized and that the more knots, burls the piece has it makes it prone to curling etc, this rather surprised me as my other Junipr knives have not done this...

Here's the Crackhead...:D:eek:

My Du Barry laguiole with juniper covers also cracked at the rear pin, on both sides. Thankfully the covers have resisted curling and stayed flat against the liner.

I've left my knife as is. The cracks don't seem to have expanded any. Should they do so, I will fill with liquid superglue and blend as best as I can.

I think that cracks in the wood indicate insufficient seasoning more than anything. I have an Laguiole en Aubrac with olivewood covers that cracked at the pivot pin.

For your trouble, I think you should request figured olive. Depending on the specimen olivewood can be very beautiful and impressive.

kamagong kamagong Appreciate you sharing your experiences Christian, I value them. Sent the knife back today after the Easter break, Nicolas in France and the others have been most helpful and professional over this. I was brooding about turning to Ramshorn, it would cost a bit extra but a reasonable sum but I opted for the free replacement of any wood scales and chose Olivewood. It does surprise me that they don't use stabilised Juniper, just 'dried' ...seems like it is courting trouble as nowhere has totally stable moisture levels ? Odd thing is I have a couple of G.David inexpensive factory knives in Juniper and they have not shown any shrink back or cracking at all in 6 years. Same with a GR factory knife also in Juniper.

I have a decent sized Juniper tree in the garden that died 2 seasons ago after a -37C session and a spring drought...Want to find somebody to cut it down as I'd like to store some of the wood for possible knife use, the rest for fragrant fire-wood in the sauna ♠️

Maybe they don't stabilize juniper because doing so would eliminate its peppery fragrance.
