traditional knives in movies

C. Eastwood's True Crime

I believe I saw a Buck 110 used in "The Shadow Riders" set in post Civil War 1865? Either that or a facsimile which didn't exist in those days.
Katherine Ross slipped it out of her boot. Jeffrey Osterhage used it to cut his bindings. When it was stuck in the sand, looked like there was a second blade too.

So who’s mistake is this?

Producer, director, Sam Elliott?

I’ve often wondered who makes these decisions and who is responsible for errors.

At first the script-girl, supposed to remember of how the scene was shot and take pictures to help (say hi Polaroïd!), then the prop master (and crew) who provides the accessory choosed in accordance with the director's crew.
The producer only takes cares of cigare cutters. 😄

Don't forget the editors.
It'e too late when the rushes reach their hands. All must be fixed during the rehearsal, when the roll leaves the stage it is considered as def wrapped. Cost would be tremendous should they remake a scene just for a knife (except maybe if Mr Wayne yells about it, but, remember, he was also producer 😊 ). Movies are full of continuity errors, but noone (or very, very few) notice it. Sometime as huge as a spotlight. As they used to say : if spectators see it, the picture's no good!
If you look at the upper top part of old Hollywood movies (1/33 and 1/66) you will sometimes see the mike and even the kind of boom they used !
Same about wrong knife used, who else but us does notice?
