Traditional knives, traditional storage

Yes it seems people these days treat everything as disposable. I call it the "bic" generation, use it up,toss it,buy a new one. Then blame past generations for being wasteful and not recycling 🤦‍♂️

I hate the disposable mindset. I've been trying to buy better quality things made of woods, leather, metals, etc... with replaceable parts instead of cheap plastic "stuff" just to cut down on stuff going to recycle/ landfill. Tossing the previous printer because it's cheaper to buy a new one than buy the replacement ink is insanity IMHO.

Nice find. Any need or plans to do restoration?

I've been told that my chest is an old card catalog from a library. I haven't researched it, but it did come out of an antique mall. It didn't sell and they gave it to me.

It came with hundreds of the dividers.

Some drawers have piles of knives, some have just a couple in individual compartments. The drawers are 20" deep, so deep enough for five compartments per side, or 10 per drawer.

I've had this chest for five or six years. At some point I'll fix it up a little, but for now I enjoy that it's old and shows it's age. It's worked out great for storing my knives. Much better than the old metal toolbox that they used to be in.

I am thinking about picking up one of the harbor freight chests, i have had issues in the past with the foam gridlike drawer liners imprinting on whatever lays on it. I am thinking of getting cork drawer liners. What do you all think about cork? It seems like a good safe surface. I will post pics once i get it and fill it up!

Don’t know how it works out for knives, but all my Dad’s old tackle boxes had cork lining. I don’t recall any of the odd chemical reaction damage we see with todays synthetic linings. Gerstner felt works for sure.

I've been thinking about getting some cork for my cheap HF chest. Haven't made the leap, yet. Looking forward to others' answers regarding the cork.

As for the HF chest - handle with care IMHO. I've been babying mine and some of the trays are already starting to loosen up. I bought it as something slightly nicer looking than plastic tubs to hold my knives until I could find an older machinist chest, one either already restored or easy enough to restore within my basic skills, not so sure the HF is going to last that long.

I thought I’d posted this here before, but I guess it was a different storage thread. I store my knives in this old Dayton parts cabinet.

I lined the drawers with some tool chest drawer liner (it came in a roll, and I cut it to fit the drawers).

On top of the chest, I keep a cigar box with the lid removed, also lined with tool box drawer liner. I use this as a staging area of sorts. I place knives in the box after I carry them, then after a few have accumulated, I wipe them down, oil them and put ‘em away.

Thought I’d provide an update to this post of mine from a few years back. Unfortunately I ran out of space in the parts cabinet I was using for knife storage, and recently it had gotten to the point where I had knives sitting around all over the place because I couldn’t fit any more in the drawers.

A reasonable person might take that as a sign to pare back their collection, maybe be more thoughtful about what they have and what they add to it. Not me. I just found bigger storage. 😁

I’d been looking for an old flat file cabinet (like you’d have for blueprints or maps) because I thought it would make a good knife storage solution, but I was having a hard time finding a used one (and they’re crazy expensive if you buy them new).

So I went this route instead. I had looked at tool chests before, but usually the ones that were big enough had drawers that were just too deep and you’d end up wasting a lot of space. I like that this one has a lot of shallow drawers, great for knives, and a couple deeper drawers for knife-related accessories.
