Trapped on a deserted Island folding knife

Taken in Montserrat mountain, Catalonia, Spain. Very famous place here, unique in both shape and type of rock/mineral.

Sorry, I re-read the title; "Trapped on a deserted Island folding knife":

Folding 'Chete...;)

Legit answer this time; a Black Bear Knives Intimidator would be pretty useful:

Does the intimidator come with a deep carry pocket clip

SAK Huntsman. That was easy.

^ This. I've had a Huntsman model for close on to 23 years, and it's still the all-around best, IMHO. If a larger model is needed, a Victorinox Atlas or a Wenger Everest would be my next choice.

Here's my Huntsman with an Aitor (Spain) Gran Capitan. I think any of the Aitor utility types would be useful as well, but they're not as common in the U.S. The funky tool blade on the GC isn't really all that functional for everyday use, but in a crash & survive situation, I'm sure some creative uses could be found for it. Aitor has a few other models as well.

For a more traditional U.S.-made model, the modern Camillus-made Remington R4243 is great for outdoors and heavy construction work - it's a good camp knife as well. May not be ideal, but in a dire life-or-death situation (ie: stranded on a desert island with no internet ), I'd be happy to have it with me.

I found it was a nice little knife but came up short in terms of living up to it's touted outdoors capabilities. YMMV...

Too small, too thick of a grind for outdoors use and barely there (although very smooth) lockup as in not enough pressure on the lockbar to feel safe without using the secondary lock. :thumbdn: Not my cup of java at all.

I've used it to pry a WW2 vet our of his car that was beginning to burn. I admit that the door was stuck by only an 8th of an inch or so but with the engine already on fire I had to act quickly. I did put the lock on it and it worked. Jeff Randall is a friend of mine and given my others I'd carry one of his RAT fixed blades. In the mean time the HEST is carryable without exposing it to others.

Your airplane has crashed landed in the middle of the ocean and your the only survivor, and all you have is your trusty ________ clipped yo your pocket. what is it?? haha :D

That's what I was thinking. Haven't been there myself but being a climber who reads a few climbing magazines, that scenery looked familiar. I hope you had a great time there! I usually don't venture that far. I live in Bilbao and the farthest I usually go for climbing/mountaineering is like 6h driving to the Pirinees (Torla, Benasque, Bielsa, etc.)

Leatherman Charge AL. Not the TTi cause sharpening that in the field would be a bear.

aaaaahhh . . . grizzle . . . this isn't that kind O' forum.

Wenger 16999 Giant and probably the CS Espada XL
I hate to say it but one would probably be dragged down to the bottom before reaching shore.

Sad to say someone beat me to the cell phone knife.

Mostly I am lurking . . . got here days late . . . glad I read all the posts so I wasn’t “That Guy” well two or three of ‘em now. I just assumed I was part of the crew as engineer and so brought what ever the heck “tool” I said I needed to do my job and that is how I got the knife on the plane.

Assuming the plane was mine and I was flying . . . well . . . hah . . . we couldn’t be having this thread because I would think it would be clear to ALL that we would not have been in the drink to start with. ;):D

As far as dental work and best all around island tool I thought it would be obvious that the answer is :
A folding ice skate. You obviously have not done much island survival. No . . . no . . . hard to beat the ice skate folder . . . a proven life saver.

Great question though.

Interesting that in one camp is the ABSOLUTE necessity of a massively strong and fail safe blade lock
and in the other camp
a basic desire to have more than one tool in a relatively tiny folder with a complete absence of a blade lock as long as we have a stainless blade and a way to make fire and sew/construct/extract etc.

I don’t know where I come down yet. I can see how one would be in trouble without a taste of both.
If one could get down to the plane . . . well lots of nice, long, high strength thin things in the jet engine . . . no but surely that is too much to hope for.

yep good thread.

At this juncture I would have to say that since I like a challenge and have a taste for if not a down right attraction to satire and stories of triumph in spite of the most preposterous preparations . . .

I might say give me my most recent EDC/mod project, the Cold Steel Ti Lite Four alu handled, voted least likely folder to be carried on desert island survival , four years in a row, I think it was four years in a row, well three at least . . . and let me see what we can do with it. At least I bet I can cause a coconut to leak a bit with one so I can at least get diarrhea.

I hate to leave you on that off color note but . . . there it is.

Something simple, reliable, and plain edge so I can sharpen it. Flow through design so easy to keep clean, and stainless blade. Probably a frame lock, liner lock, or compression lock.

I would love to see someone build a shelter and a fire with a swiss army knife. Assuming I have no fixed blade, I would like to have something as close as possible. A folding kukri..
