Trio Thursday

Thanks, I agree Michael. That hatchet is small and very light, so it takes some time to get through anything large. But it will get through it. The Bushraptor is in 3/32" 01, and is an excellent cutter/slicer. The Recluse is one I got from mistwalker and is in 5/32 01, filling in the mid-chore duties. All three on the belt is not that heavy, and I feel well prepared for any situation that I might find myself in. I work in infectious diseases, and I am very well aware that some diseases like Brucellosis and Anthrax can infect both humans and animals. As a result, I am a little anal about field hygiene and food safety. For this reason I always like to have two knives on me. One for field dressing and raw meat processing, the other for cooked meat and tuber/plant food processing.

Here's my preferred trio setup when I'm out in the wild. Recently ordered the Velvicut Boy's Axe. Pretty excited about that one as well :)

Very sweet trio Andy! That Woodchuck (I think) is awesome. I can't wait to see the picks of the boys axe. Have you tried any Victornox MTs? I am carrying a Spirit, and I like it much more than any Leatherman I have. All tools are on the outside (except pliers). I like it much more than the Charge Ti or the Surge. Charge Ti has more tool options compared to the base Spirit, but I rarely, if ever, need that much variety, especially in the field.

I've never tried the Victorinox Spirit MT but it looks pretty cool. This Leatherman Wave was my first multitool. What made you like the Spirit one over the Leathermans?

Btw, the knife is a bushfinger. I'm interested in a woodchuck or woodsman though, mainly for cooking.

Darn, missed another one. The Spirit is very well made with a quality, fit and finish that is much better than the modern Leathermans, IMO. All tools are accessible from the outside while the pliers are closed. The one thing that I do not like about the Spirit buy itself is that the Spirit has a serrated knife blade. They make a version with a plain one, but they are not as common as the serrated ones. This does not bother me at all as I always carry other knives on me, and I never go to the MT when I only need a knife. Some have knocked the Spirit as the Phillips screwdriver is polished like the rest of the tool, stating that it will slip easier than the Leatherman. This is probably a valid criticism, but I have had no problems with it. If a screw us uber tight or rusted, it is usually a walk to the tool chest for me with either MT on the belt. In summary, feel, fit and finish, and overall quality hands down goes to the Spirit, IMO.

Nice matching pair with the Runt and the Asp (I think). Trying not to cheat to see if I get them correct.

Yes, Asp is Nat on Nat with Black pinstripe, Runt is Nat on Black with white pinstripe, and Sneaky Pete is coffee bag burlap on black with white pinstripe.

How about a Fiddleback Trio, just received my Runt from last Friday!!

In this pic, the basic contours of the handles look the same for all three knives. Anyone know if the Sneaky family handle evolved from the runt handle?

Bushcrafter, Recluse, Asp .. all box elder

Thanks. The Asp is just visiting while it gets fitted for some pants. ;)

I would like to see what you come up with on it. I have one of those as well with the false grind. Part of my ever expanding Men in Black collection.
