Trouble with recon0317

Sorry if I'm chiming in a bit late but I was the one who bought the DOC off of Recon. He issued me a refund for the knife through PayPal before he shipped it, around the time when this whole GBU thing started. He seemed like a cool guy that was trying to make it right on both sides but the refund didn't go through. His bank declined it the first time and after the second failed attempt on Monday the 23rd, it was canceled. I sent him multiple emails but so far, no response. I don't even think he's even been on since his last reply here. I waited because I was hoping he would come through in the end but I'm starting to have my doubts. Has anyone here ever had experience with something like this? I'm really not sure what to do right now.
 
Shady... - Did you pay with PayPal? If so, file a claim now. I'd also contact law enforcement, but that's a personal decision.
 
Yeah it was PayPal but I think the original payment was through F&F. Not sure if it's covered but I'll give it a shot.
 
So, to recap: calemerson (the OP) trades a Microtech to recon0317 for a Reate. recon0317 receives the Microtech, but does not send the Reate. Then, he sells the Microtech to ShadyMethods, does not send it, and then issues a "refund" to Shadymethods that does not go through and ends up being cancelled.

So recon0317 has apparently stolen from two separate Blade Forum members as has not responded to anyone for 10 days. He has some explaining to do.

Of course it isn't covered if you used F&F. PayPal protections don't apply to transactions in which they're getting ripped off.

As has been said so many times over....If you gift someone money through Friends & Family method of PayPal, you may have to just consider it a GIFT when no product arrives. Absolutely no recourse through PayPal, because you opted to check the little box affirming the transaction was NOT for payment of a product. Sometimes it's an expensive lesson to learn, especially when someone is pressuring you, and dangling a pretty knife in front of you.

Obviously it doesn't help most trade transactions, but it could. Ok, just spit-balling here, but......What if, when trading, both parties pay each other the same agreed upon amount (approximating estimated item value). Once money is received by both parties, through PayPal G&S, product may be sent. If one party fails to send funds, no product is shipped, and funds from the other are returned. After funds received by both...if one fails to send item, the other party can use PayPal to negotiate a refund. Yes PayPal would get their 3%, but in my eyes, that is a very fair fee to have their backing of the transaction. I see it just like using a broker or knife dealer to facilitate, but much easier. Each member basically holding escrow for the other, until transaction is complete.
 
Unfortunately this is the 2nd time I have lost a knife in a trade here. The other was to bends who finally got banned. I did finally see that knife for sale here, I had the chance to buy it back. I didnt buy it back.
We are pretty slow to react to members who dont hold up to their part of the deal, but real fast to chap anyone who reports or post an issue.
This is the 2nd time I have been stolen from here and the 2nd time the mods have giving me a chappy for posting and reporting an issue about being stolen from. They let bends continue to be a member until he finally stole another knife and was finally banned.
Recon0317 started with the bull crap excuses as soon as he got the DOC and continued to make up more and more as it went on. Poor actions for a disabled VET.
How does the USN keep their forum free of thieves?
 
calemerson it has been over a week since Recon0317 has posted here and evidently you have not heard from him since. You may want to consider putting Recon0317's name etc into this thread (and thread title) so others can avoid him regardless of any forum name he may use in the future.

Sorry this is happening to you. I'm one that chimed in at the very beginning in defense of Recon.

I'm unsure of what the reason for any of this is but it seems totally out of character.

I've made some very high end trades with him multiple times and have never run into an issue.

Again, apologies that you're going through this ordeal and I'm still hoping it pans out alright in the end.

Just wanted to give everyone an update. I called PayPal and they opened a claim for me. I don't think it mattered that the original payment was through F&F because the transaction in question was a refund. I'm definitely going to be more careful with F&F from now on. Guess I got lucky with this one. Calemerson, I don't know how it's going to work out for you but I wish you the best. Hopefully he comes around.

Not exactly calemerson. As I told you, if recon gets banned, there is no further communication, no chance of getting your knife back, no thread, nothing else we can do. We know what has happened here, we are well aware, several moderators are. I asked you nicely to relax a short while ago. I was conversing with recon. If you are interested in the USN, head on over there and ask, this is not the best place for such discussions, we can't speak to what they do. I can say that if you think things are fluffy clouds and rainbows on every other forum as it relates to trades, selling, and buying, you are very mistaken. There are horror stories aplenty, they just don;t get shared because some forums are "Omerta" driven and your membership there depends on your silence. Just because you don't see or smell the dirty laundry, doesn't mean someone is always washing the clothes.

I'm sorry for your luck in this case, it is unfair and unfortunate that you got the run around up until now. There really wasn't any way to predict that this was going to happen as recon had a decent reputation in the short time he has been here. Sometimes, people have personal crises and the proverbial shit hits the fan. There have been a lot of people over the years that gave no clear warning sign, no alarm bells, nothing that they were getting ready to fly off a cliff. I guess in your report I was unsure of what you wanted. If you want, I will ban recon, and we can all move along because you can't put the cork back in that bottle once we go there. So, be clear, what is it you want us to do?

Edit: FYI - Recon has not been on Bladeforums in 10 days as of today.

Personally i feel for you Calemerson, I've dealt with you without a hitch that's neither here nor there but your alright in my book.

Considering the circumstances and the back story of Recon something may have happened . He seemed like a stand up guy that's going through a lot . He made mistakes by selling that knife before completing the deal but talked like he was mailing or preparing to get the deal squared away.

I hope the dude is OK first of all . May be a little extreme but he did list the hospital he was at and even said you could verify he was there . Anyone want to volunteer to call? I just think it's best to rule out he's not in bad shape before we call him a scammer JUST because of his situation .
 
Dude seems like an old school leather neck . Dudes like that do what they say and say what they mean . I'm hoping (is it bad to say I hope he's not well) yall know what I mean I don't wish illness on anyone , I just hope he's not well enough to ship .

I do agree with you that sometimes shit happens stopping good people to do the right things. I hope that Recon is not that bad illed. And I hope he can stand out and clear everything. As you can not take your illness as excuse.

Recon is very wrong taking this as a drama. Taking not fulfilling his obligation as part a drama. He should to compensate to the 2 BF members and apologize no matter what. If he is badly illed that ourselves every single person whether to sympathize him or not.
 
I'm not vouching for the guy , I don't know him etc. He seemed like a stand up guy ,after the pressure got put on him he should of handled it different no doubt , getting mad that he wasn't contacted and saying he was going to undo both deals .

I really hope he hasn't decided to scam these guys , he seems proud of what he's accomplished and I hate to see his name in the same manner category as scammers. Balls in his court though , I was just asking for a little bit more patience just because of the situation and he could be not able to do anything right now.
 
I had a client years ago, that was a disabled vet like recon0317. He got shot up pretty bad in Nam, and also lost a leg. We did a lot of business together, but he rarely paid on time, and passed a lot of bad checks. I gave him a lot of slack, out of respect for his service, but I eventually figured out a way to get all of my money, and end the relationship. He was on a lot of pain medication, and I believe that it affected his business pratices.

I know it's probably a far stretch, but I know at one point Recon was desperately ill, or at least he claimed to be. Is it possible that he is still rolling through some hard times and is sick? I'm in no way defending him, I'm really just hoping that he hasn't actually caused this much harm to a member as I've dealt with him in the past and it was everything but sketchy; actually a very good trade. False hope I imagine. Good luck OP.
