TV series REALLY worth owning on DVD.

Magnum PI
Thank you. I was reading through this thread, having a hard time believing that noone had even mentioned Magnum P.I.
Only TV series I've felt worth buying, and I've watched all of season 1 and 2 twice each since getting them.

I'd love to have the Honeymooners in a box set. I saw individual DVDs at a Cracker Barrel as few months ago, but haven't really looked for them anywhere else.
This thread brought back memories. One of my friends in the 2nd or 3rd grade used to pretend to be Doctor Who. I probably hadn't even thought of that show in over 20 years...

I would recommend the old "Combat" series from the early sixties. It follows a squad of infantry through Europe from D-Day on.

That was a great show. Kirby, Little John, Doc, and best of all- Vic Morrow best role as the tough sarge.

"Combat" was so damned corny that it was almost a parody of a war show. It was the Sergeant Rock comic books put on TV.

Deadwood
The Simpsons
Band of Brothers

There are more I'd like, but those three I own.

It is a shame you feel that way. In its day, it was "the" show to be on as an actor. It was very popular at the time, which says a lot considering WW II had ended only 15 years prior. Most of those who served were still alive.
Granted the combat scenes were not the most realistic (what tv/movie is?) What sets the show apart from most is the underlying stories and themes. Did you ever notice they don't use profanity? That was not a sign of the times, that was specifically decided on by the writers and cast. It was very idealistic also in that the "good guys" always tried to do the "right thing" regardless of the cost. I think you should take a closer look at it, it really is more than Sgt Rock on TV.

Two that haven't been mentioned:

"Crime Story", especially the first season.
And "Lonesome Dove". IMO a fantastic western.

Something else that wasn't mentioned was a pretty corny show called Sledgehammer about a dirty-harry type cop that was always blowing up stuff.
.
I think Welcome Back, Kotter should also be mentioned. I loved that show.
What about Bussom Buddies? I know it funny, but I don't really remember it at all. How good was it?

Mail Call.

Gotta love R. Lee Ermey! He's most definitely the real deal.

Have both seasons of SledgeHammer, funny stuff, the releases were made without the laugh track which I think helps as you don't need a canned audience letting you know when to laugh.

Gary, that's not the only seller selling those. Here's how I searched:
DVDs: TV series, keyword: West
You'll get a few other series in there, like West Wing, but you won't get that many hits, and IIRC you'll find at least 4 or 5 sellers that have it in stock.

Northern Exposure... amazing whimsical show and Janine Turner is the most beautiful creature to ever grace the planet.

Carnivale

Faulty Towers... easily the funiest sit com ever!

Baa Baa Blacksheep

I just bought the first season boxset because of you guys. I remember watching it as a kid and laughing really hard. Ain't as funny as when i was a kid. But still damn funny. Maybe if i watch it with my uncle it'll be funnier. Sometimes he laughs so hard that he falls off the seat. And most of the time watching movies are funnier with him around.

It is pretty slapstick at times, but there are a lot of little things they add that were date related, so now a days it doesn't strike us the same I think.

But agree, watching it with someone else can be contagious laughter, was just watching the second season again with my daughter last night, she's only 13 but laughed just the same. Sledge really put his all into that roll, don't know if someone else could do it the same justice.
