two legged snake problems in the woods

I live in northern california, Where pot growing is a serious business. Even the Forest service tells thier Rangers to stay out of the remote areas. Sometimes they find bodies in the woods, and sometimes they don`t. I worked with a guy , whose Grandfather was up in the hills collecting aluminium cans. They found his trail 90 m.c. , but they never found him. He was also armed with his 357 mag and was at home in the woods.

One fellow here ,while squirrel hunting, saw two men looking very out of place in the woods. He was glad he was armed at the time. That evening he found they were murderers who had just buried their victim !!!

WHEN THE HECK WAS THAT!??!?

Was their victim a squirrel ?

I've never had an encounter, but I'm always weary of people that I pass by in the bush. Just the common,"how are you doing," or, "nice whether today." I keep it simple so if they are a criminal or up to no good, they won't know who I am, what I'm doing, or how long I'm going to be out. Like somebody else said, they can easily go for your car out in the parking lot. If you say, "Hi I'm so-in-so and I'm going to be out here for a couple of days." Well they just found out who's car to look for when it is one of the few that doesn't leave at nightfall. If I had a pistol I would be sure to carry it in the bush. I'm looking into getting one, right now I just have rifles and a lot of knives :D. Maybe if I don't buy a knife for a week or two I can afford a simple pistol :p.

I consider a firearm for self defense, emergency, etc., to be nothing more than an "insurance policy," just like the insurance policy on my home, my car, etc.

If I knew when my home was going to burn down, I'd have a moving van there before and move all our "stuff" out. If I knew when I was going to have a vehicle accident, I'd just not be there. Same with self defense. If I knew when and where I was going to be attacked, I'd avoid that place like the plague. As I can't determine any of these "events," I have "insurance."

Same with going out into the boonies, hunting, fishing, camping, or just hiking. I have "insurance."

My "insurance" varies, depending on when and where I'm going, or if hunting season is on, etc. but I am NEVER unarmed.

For example, a couple of months ago, I was up in the high country of Idaho, scouting for elk and deer season, in some very remote country. Although I wasn't actually "hunting" them, I carried a Mountain lion tag and a Black bear tag, as their seasons were open.

In additon to a small day pack with other "goodies," here is what I carried for that scouting expedition.

Once I shot a rabid fox; another time I stopped four guys who were breaking into a very remote cabin that belonged to a friend of mine.

"Being prepared" means Being Prepared, to my way of thinking.

If I were out in the "deep woods", it would probably be for hunting, so I'd likely have a 12 gauge or .303 with me. I think those guns would be just fine.
If hiking, then I'm stuck with a knife. Probably a bigger fixed blade one for woods carry.
Most people and animals seem to be scared off just fine by a knife if you're going to use it on them, so I wouldn't be worried if "only" armed with a knife.
But yeah, there ARE some weirdos out in the woods.

Sam , that goes back a few years and I can't remember the exact details. My hunting buddy knows the guy....Sam, you never know .There was a young woman who had lived in the city and always carried a knife for defense .She moved here in a very rural area so she stopped carrying the knife. She met a BG from PJ who murdered her ,by Camp Lochada.I spoke to a few people who had gone to school with him - they were not surprised ! BTW case was solved very quickly becasue a citizen noticed something unusual and wrote down a plate number !

I my self have fallen victim to a drunk hunter shooting above my head because he thought it would be funny. I had to explain to him and his wife at gun point why that wasnt funny. I made them unload their guns and go about their business. The ones I really dont like are the guys who are too cheap to get binoculars and they put their gun up to see you through the scope. I really worry about people, so I go armed with my XD .45 Tactical whenever possible.

Beautiful kit. Please excuse my ignorance, but what are those guns? How many rounds does the rifle hold?

Many of the hunters I bump into try to talk me to death. :)ss.

SS Thank's for the post, now I have to clean the mess on the keyboard...
I try to avoid the "fudds" conversations.example; Fud- have you seen anything ? Me-Oh yeah lots to see in these parts. Fud -Oh really ! how many? any big uns ? Me- Big what ? Conversations quickly go downhill from there.
It's not that I am unfriendly. I just don't offer any extra help to the hunters hunting in the area I'm hunting, unless their a member of my party.

Sometimes I feel like I am the only person here on BF that doesn't own a gun, like guns, or feel the overwelming need to carry a gun.

That said, when I am out in the deep woods I do carry one of those big cans of bear pepperspray & a big chopper straped to my leg; and when in people filled parks a can of pepper foam and a small-ish fixed blade (usually out of site, but accesable.)

I don't own a gun either bro, not because I have anything against them it's just that I don't need one.
One day I hope to maybe take up hunting small game so things would then change !

I'd love to own a gun, but in my gun-phobic state of Taxachusetts, I'll need to go through a lot of courses and whatnot. I'll have some time to do that in the summer.

I am compelled to ask: Why don't you like guns?

Just curious.

.

This will probably open up a can of worms.

1. Guns are made to kill things, and I don't like to killing things. Now I'm going to contradict myself some when I say this I do own bows & crossbows, I collect swords and other period weapons and have trained period fighting styles (think of it as western martial arts.) But, to me there is a skill and an art to use these and use them effectivly--any idiot can use a gun (I'm not calling anybody here an idiot, but many of you have relayed stories on this thread of said idiots.)

2. I dislike handguns more than other types of firearms as handguns (at least the vast majority) are designed to kill people, and I don't think that there is a need for the average citizen to be able to own handguns.

Now I say all this being very firearm educated and not ignorance. I come from a family of hunters and my father is a retired federal agent. I grew-up with guns, learning: safety, responsibility, identification, and how to shoot.

David E - I hope this squelched your curiosity. If you or anyone else have any further questions just let me know. I am more than happy to have intellegent discussions on most any topic.

Cheers

See I think required gun courses are a great idea. We make people go thru a courseand testing to get a drivers liscence and a gun is just as dangerous if not more-so than a car (I say this only becasue you can fit a car in your pants; statistically more people are probably killed by cars per year than guns)

CAN DO - " Beautiful kit. Please excuse my ignorance, but what are those guns? How many rounds does the rifle hold?"

Can Do, thanks for the compliment on my kit. The rifle is a Marlin 336 in .30-30 Winchester. It holds six rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber. (Nine rounds in that butt cuff.) The revolver is a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt. (I put the stag stocks on it.) The cartridges are my reloads of a 255 grains Hornady Jacketed Hollow Point bullet in front of 10.0 grains of Unique powder.

The top knife is my ancient Camillus Stockman, and the fixed blade is a Ruana Workman.

In that black nylon pouch on the rear of the Ruana sheath are a ferrocerium rod, charcloth, two Band Aids, and a pencil type diamond sharpener. The "orange" colored block just above the pouch is a wax/shredded paper/wick firestarter which I can light with my Zippo, if I really need it.

Compass is a 25 year old Silva, good as new. The red cords are 24 feet long. As I said, I also carry a small daypack with other things in it, but those items in the picture are "attached" to my person, no matter what.

Don't know what your laws are exactly in Mass., although know they are stringent, but I don't think you'd have too much trouble buying a good Marlin 336 .30-30 Win., or equivalent. Not too much out there in the boonies that a .30-30 won't handle.

Good luck.

This seems to be the typical attitude of NY residents. They've bought into the constant anti-gun media hype.

Tell me, Bare Rib, what OTHER Rights would you require "training" before being able to exercise them? How about requiring a course on how to properly post on public forums before exercising your First Amendment?

As for your "gun safety course" requirement dream, tell me.........how many criminals would comply ?

Who pays for it ? Who gets the money ? Who runs it ? Who pre-qualifies the citizen, to make sure they are "suitable" for owning a gun in the first place?

Would you require it for someone that owns multiple guns?

Owning a gun is a RIGHT. Owning a car is a RIGHT.........driving the car on public roadways is the privilege and THAT is why you need a license. Not to buy one and not to drive one (on private property) Not to mention it raises a lot of money for the state.

Using your "logic," one should be required to undergo safety training BEFORE buying a knife. They need to show how to handle one safely, etc, etc.........you know.......if it only saves ONE Life...................
