Um, Snark?

As we watch the fireworks on this glorious day, lets not forget what they represent. Musket balls and cannon shot being hurled into the faces of those who would deny us our freedom.

Hey electrically knowledgeable people,

the new house has an 8x16 shed out back that is just at 50 feet from the nearest plug (based on stepping it off). I'm thinking I'm going to buy an extension cord, run a window unit (probably 8000 BTU), a florescent shop light, and one tool (grinder, drill press, etc.) at a time. Will that possibly work off a 100' 12/3 extension cord with a heavy duty outlet strip? I'm concerned a 50' would be just a bit too short. I can't find a 75'. And chance it will work and I won't blow the circuit time and time and time again?

Thanks and Happy Independence Day all!

Sweet sheaths 710. You need to sell on the river store so i can buy a globetrotter sheath using my river store gift card credit. :D

I ran a 2X42 a few times with a box fan and 4' grow light off an extension cord for a few days before running electric to my shop.

My shop is about 30' feet from my house's outside outlet. I used a 100' extension cord because that's what i had at the time...

prolly not the best method but i never blew anything while doing it that way.

Once i ran electric i burned out a fuse 3 times but figured out why... Well i called in an electrician and he figured out why... After wanting to charge me 1500 to rerun electric and add larger circuits he told me the shop was ran to the same fuse as my well... So when the shop fridge was running and the well kicked on... If i turned ANYTHING else on the fuse blew... He also told me i had an unused breaker at the main box...

I switched things around myself, just hooked the main shop line to an unused fuse at the main breaker, and had no problems since.

One day i should prolly upgrade my electrical setup... But for now it's doing good.

so long as those are the only things on the 20 amp circuit you're plugged into, you should be fine.
(see WW's adventure above for an example)

My KMG (110v/1.5HP) is on its own 20A circuit, and I can only run it at full tilt with certain tools or it pops the 20A surge protector's breaker. The BIG (Walker/Turner) drill press is plugged into the same strip - only need to run one at a time. The rest of the benchtop tools, including vacuum and filtered box fan (dust collection, both) are unfortunately on one circuit. But it seems to work. When running the KMG, the vac and fan have plenty of juice. I could move the vac to the 20A circuit, but switching back and forth would be a PITA.

At less than 200 sq ft, you could get by with as little as a 5k or 6k BTU unit, IF the shed has any insulation at all. If it is NOT insulated, in College Station during the summer, even 8K might not be enough. :D

You need 3 numbers ::
1 - Amp draw of the shop light
2 - amp draw on startup of the AC compressor
3 - amp draw of each tool you intend to have in the shop/

Add 1 + 2 + the highest value of "3". IF the total is less that 20 amps, you SHOULD be OK.

Your worst case scenario is the light is on, the AC fan is running and then just as you turn your highest startup amp requirement tool, your AC compressor kicks in. That's why you add the amps up of what all will be "ON" on the circuit and could be "starting up" simultaneously.

Wow... We just jinxed me it seems...

My pump/well stopped working... No water to the house. No pressure at the tank on the guage. No water out the hose directly at the pump.

No breaker popped or tripped. I flipped the breaker back and forth to try resetting. Power is going to the pump. But the pump isn't working. The low pressure switch box doesn't have a reset arm sticking out to reset. Tried the overload restart. Nothing happened.

Worked fine earlier today.

.

This...

10k btu isn't enough for my, not insulated, 200 sq ft metal shop. I tried a buddy's 10k unit he was selling just to test it out but even left on for hours barely put a dent in the hot temp... Not worth the added electrical cost to keep it running all day to drop from 110 degrees to 100.

I have a 5600 iirc btu unit currently collecting dust in a corner because opening 2 cross windows with box fans creating a draft cooled the shed better.

I'm glad i got windows on 3 sides and the door on the 4th.

If its 85 degrees outside its over 100 in there. I have seen it hit 119 on a day that was 90 outside here.

To hot to do anything but grab a beer from the fridge and RUN!!!

Well, that sux. Hope you figure it out soon, before y'all start attracting flies....but seriously, I hope you figure it out. Might actually be that the pump itself has burnt out. Funny how no one thinks about water coming out where we expect it to until the SHTF....although in my house it's usually that water is not exiting the house the way I expect it to....I don't know which is worse - but both situations are NOT optimum.

Been there, done both.

If pump draw is particularly high, not just at startup, suspect the pump. :-(
Do you know how deep the well is?

You can always run a dehumidifier to pull water out of the air to flush the toilets in Florida. :D

Thanks Granite!!

Daizee, Not sure how deep the well is.

But... It came back on... I have water again... So weird. Maybe tripping the breakers or the overload switch reset it but it took an hour or so to reboot??? Maybe a short or bad contacts in the switch?? Maybe magic??

Either way it came back on and is spitting water out with great water pressure again. Now i won't have to make the kids poop in the woods... I still might... I kind of enjoy pooping in the woods haha. :D

No water coming in is ALWAYS preferable to water coming in where it is not desired. Having experienced both extremes, trust me on one - it is always easier and better to go get a few buckets of water to flush or bathe with than it is to sit on the top step of your stairs and dabble your feet in the water while watching catfish and carp swim around in your living room for 45+ days.

All this water talk has got me needing to pee whenever I read the snark thread! Good lord guys!

How is everyone doing these days? Sorry I been slacking. Back to work and it's been kicking my butt.

Went hiking over the weekend, brought a Becker but never used it because the campground didn't allow fire OR weapons and was privately-owned federal property. Otherwise it was a great trip, got in 18 miles of hiking which was nice and communed with a different side of nature than I'm used to, which was also nice.
