Guys, you don't have to keep watching hoss' movie. The snark thread is still open.

Hoss's video reminded me of this

Any of you guys have a suunto core? Been wanting a new watch and I really like the looks of it

What's the battery life on those things?
Reliability was a solved problem in timekeeping until things got complicated.

I just bought a new suunto ambit 3 at half the price. Pretty nice, especially handy for when I'm gonna pick up swimming again.

Battery life is good, and easily rechargeable on a laptop. If you've got everything on with bells and whistles I think it was 100 hours. If it's just for timekeeping than it's a loooot longer.

I kinda liked the looks of the core a bit more, but the ambit was on sale so meh... And it came with a heart rate monitor. Very solid outdoor watch.

If it's purely for hiking, get the core though. Altitude, compass,... A lot more functions in that one.

:-P

My benchmark is measured in years, as before the whole smart-device revoltution.
I'm sure they are good devices, but a watch that might stop working in a couple days without a recharge is a failure as a timepiece, IMO. I'd rather have a watch and then a device that does all the other things.

How many people use their smartphone as a watch? You have to recharge that thing every day...

You gotta recharge this suunto only once every couple weeks with regular use. Once every 100 hours or so if you would be out running with high accuracy gps and training being displayed on your watch 24/7. But I do have to sleep sometimes. And work. That kinda stuff, lol.
A mechanical watch you also have to wind every other day, lol. I don't really mind for quartz, generally so... I'm good with this suunto. Much better/longer lasting watch than your regular smart watch.

Sure, and it's a silly idea for a piece of equipment you need to be reliable as soon as you're no longer within 5 minutes of an outlet everywhere you go. These are super first world devices, but the first world is a very small patch of dirt.

I prefer robust, non-electrical timepieces. My self-winding Seiko is only 39.8 years old and hasn't need a battery charnge or recharge since they I bought it. It worked reliably in camping situation, and in 2nd and 3rd world countries where the closest electrical outlet was 50 or 60 miles away.

Agreed. Ma favourite watches are automatic Seiko and Orient watches. I have a few... The Suunto is a good 'multitool' in the watch world, so to speak.

I just get whatever's cheap at walmart. Digital that has the date and day on the main display because I have to fill out 3 or 4 pieces of paperwork a day at work with the date and time on them. Sometimes more.

Jug jug.

Frequently use that setup. More often without the upper pulley, but I'll occasionally add the pulley when i'm jugging with more gear.

i'm trying out some new setups... slightly different gear. slightly different purpose. going up: the same.

found out a couple hours ago, that one of the longest places i've ever lived at, and that housed the Becker Collection, burned to the ground tonite...

course, i moved out some 4ish years ago. to a different kind of death trap :D

long live the collection...

Yow! Now if you can just say 4 years ahead of disaster...
