Um, Snark?

So, I guess quick update since I been absent so much lately.

Last week Saturday Angel's engine detonated(226,857 miles on the odometer) on the way home from a float trip, 76.7 miles away from home. Got it towed home, and then traded it in on a new car, 2016 Buick Verano with 4,1xx miles on the odometer. It doesn't have ALL the bells and whistles but it has quite a few, including things like starting my car from my phone, and bluetooth built in, and blah blah blah. It's a $29,000 car that I got for $19,000 because of... I dunno, but I'll take it!

I also got a letter today from Mercy hospital (my hospital where all my pneumonia stuff went down), they completely wrote off, 100% a $45,000 debt for me.

I got it in and the thing feels great in hand. Really good ergonomics with my not so big hands. Warrior sized hands may have an issue though. Came packaged great with a couple extra items i didnt expect, a little ammo pouch and a patch.

Putting it together is a little stiff, the parts are made to fit tightly and its recommended to use a silicon based lube, i didnt have any so i didnt use any, and taking the heads off without it require more than a little effort. Once together there is no doubt the head will come off and there is no play in the handle and head.

I started off with the slingshot head, and quickly realized i needed more practice. Its been quite a while since i shot a slingshot, but i was enjoying it and no effort was required to draw the band back and fire. After 15-20 shots i was hitting my cans here and there from 20 feet or so. Not every time... But hey i know i need more practice...

Then i tried the slingbow head to shoot a few arrows. Granted im not great with a bow and apparently not so great with a slingshot anymore, i was still very excited to put the slingbow head on.

When i ordered i asked to substitute the normal bands for the heaviest bands they have, as i need as much power as i can get to penetrate gar's armor. And honestly i was a bit worried i wouldnt get as much power from a slingshot as a recurve bow. Their customer service, Nathan, is awesome and was glad to make the switch. Well i definitely got some heavy duty powerful bands LOL. Feels very similar to the draw of a 50lb recurve or longbow. And my worry is put to ease after the first shot!! Despite completely missing the bag.

I was shooting from around 50 feet away. Using the old shed as a backstop. Not worried about hitting it with arrows, the people who built it never finished it and the walls are falling apart anyways.

This happened a few times.

After maybe 7 or 8 shots... just barely hitting the bag a couple and hitting the shed or the ground the rest of the time, i got this...

Feeling a little confident i went for the next shot.....

DAMN!! The bands pulled right off. Nothing broke, the bands came out of their knot when i started to draw.

I called up Nathan and he was awesome, sending me a free replacement set out today and sent me videos on how to fix what i have and make more bands too.

SO for now im going to go back to slingshot mode and get in some more practice while i wait on the replacement slingbow bands. Despite the bands failing on me i really enjoy this setup and think it will be an awesome gadget that i will get lots of use and fun from! Very happy with the purchase.

Very cool! Might have to order one. How were the bands attached to the bow string?

Nice new whip!

And great news about the health care costs. Was it seriously $45,000?

With this luck, you may want to buy a lottery ticket or two!

Yeah, after insurance my portion was $45,000. I'm still kind of in shock about it getting written off. Mind you insurance paid out 80% already, so the 45k was what was left.

The new car isn't what I wanted, but it's more what I need right now. I want a pick up truck SO badly! However for the amount of miles I put a car through, and how not nice I am, having the lifetime powertrain and 150,000 bumper to bumper warranty makes a big difference. Plus it's an I-4 engine making 200hp so it gets decent gas mileage as well. When I keep my foot out of it, I get about 38 on the highway.

Nice to see the BK9 getting the recognition it deserves from folks outside of the traditional knife industry media.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

Read it and enjoyed it. Clicked on the link for "Teaching Kids Knife Safety" and saw this:

To start my son off, we gave him a small, serrated knife with a kid-centric design. It had a rounded tip and a rubber handle with a guard in the front AND the back (much like the beloved Ethan Becker designed handle found on Kabar fixed blades). It also looked like a puppy.

I wonder who is on Ethan's payroll over there....;).

Link to article; IMO it was a good read w/ some helpful info: https://gearjunkie.com/teaching-kids-knife-safety-outdoors

Wow, congrats CBear!

Can confirm, being ill and stuck on a ship blows.
Must have ate something tainted or who knows what.
Back in action today - I believe. Gonna go test that theory.

Its tied on with waxed cotton string. You can kind of see it on the side that didnt come loose above my thumb. I wanted to see if the other side would fail also and i pulled that side as hard as i could and it would NOT come loose. So im thinking the side that "failed" was just accidentally not tied as tight or secure.

After watching the repair videos its actually a very easy fix, but Nathan still sent me a couple replacement bands as well to get me back slinging arrows.

Now i really need to build some type of round ammo catch target box. I, well me and Curt, shot well over 100 times yesterday and i dont want to keep paying $15+ on 500 3/8" rounds every week LOL

Sweet ride, congrats, and congrats on having the bills covered!! Im still paying surgery bills from more than a year ago and will be paying on it another..... 3 years if my math is correct.

Cool slingshot bow thing WW

Cbear, That's awesome! a new car and a debt clear! Grats brother!

Time to catch up on a little snark... been a while.

Thanks TBL!

I made a target. It does a good job collecting all the steel ammo for me. Nothing fancy but works. The hanging old clothes in the back absorb the force and drops them in the bottom for me to collect.

And setting it up in front of the truck encourages you not to miss? :D

Hahaha!

I definitely don't use it there. It was raining so i just put it there under the carport for the picture.

I have shot around 100 times since making it but haven't missed the hole yet... Then again I'm only practicing from around 10 paces away or so... Not that far.

I don't always hit the can I'm aiming at but I'm getting better already.. About 6 times out of 10. Once i get to where I'm hitting the can i want 9 out of 10 times from this distance i will back up further.

But it didn't take as much practice as i figured to start getting the hang of it. Yesterday i was missing 6 or 7 out of 10 from the same distance LOL

I'll ramble on since snark is slow....

It's rained all day. I think it stopped for maybe an hour since this morning. Still raining. Suppose to rain like this tomorrow too. Flood warning until Tuesday morning.

It's not pouring down very hard. Just consistently coming down.

Neighbors chickens have been making a mess in my yard. He free ranges them. Leaves his gate open. Even when it's closed the gate has gaps big enough they can get out.

Use to they would go around the edge of my property and that didn't bother me but the last few days they been coming right up to my house. Shitting everywhere. Making my dogs bark. Ripped up a few of my small blackberry plants and scattered leaves that i had raked. I stepped in chicken shit 15 feet from my truck. Now it's a problem.

I love fried chicken. I left a letter on his gate explaining the problem and asked him to please keep his chickens off my property. I'll see if he does anything to address the problem. Next step will be calling animal control and or the sheriff department and asking what my rights are.

I got a nice slingshot that could handle the situation but I'd really rather not. I'd honestly prefer he just keeps them off my land. I like the fact that people have chickens, goats, cows, horses ect ect. Out here but don't think i should have to deal with their mess.

Ramble ramble...

Yeah, the morning you walk outside and see that they roosted on Ur truck will be a different story. I left mine out and they decided to roost on my roof rack...all they do is shit all night, then it cooked all day in 90° full sun. Soft top. I wanted to kill every one of them.

take pictures of chickens, shit, and damage.

send neighbor a note inviting him to a chicken dinner fry :D

then feed him store bought ;)

then ask him to bring beer, and raspberry plants ;)

then show him pictures

then show him your slingshots :D

bond

I have taken some picture already of the chicken shit and the plants they ripped up and the leaves they scattered...

If i catch the first one on my truck I'll be taking him to court... I'll blame every scratch and blemish on them chickens. i have made too many mistakes in my life letting my anger get the best of me... Even when someone deserved it i ended up losing the most. Jail isn't fun. I'd like to not go back.

I'm not sure what the law is on me killing one of his chickens on my property. I found conflicting info online. Unless the sheriff department or animal control tells me i have that right i will try and handle this the smart way.

Trust me though... The temptation will be unbearable.

Hopefully he keeps them in their coop or figures a way to keep them off my land. He got my note. It had my phone number on it. He didn't call. That's fine. Long as he keeps them away from my place it will be a done deal. If i see them again I'll make a couple phone calls and figure out what i can legally do next.

Thanks TBL!

Great idea!! Nice work my friend.

mmmm Chickens slow roasted.... sounds like a potentially delicious problem. Good luck with it

Yes, WW, you definitely want the Sheriff on your side, so a call to them would be a great idea. Seems like maybe the neighbor should offer up some eggs (if they are layers) or a bird or two (if they are meat chickens) to thank you for your understanding up to this point. Then they should keep them on their own property...

We drop off a pint or two of honey every year to our immediate neighbors to thank (and remind) them for not spraying pesticides at the bees and to promote understanding.

My wife lets out the chickens (got 39 of them now...the rooster has been taking care of business...) free range our yard each day for several hours. Otherwise, they are in an enclosed 1000 square foot run covered with 1-1/8" bird netting. The yard is fenced with 6' chain link which generally keeps them in. We did have a couple of the Kraienkoppe's get out several times when they were younger, but now they are either too heavy or just un-inclined to go over. We were over in one neighbor's yard a few time chasing them with a bass net... We also have some fencing around the back porch to keep them from crapping all over the porch. The yard is fine...the three dogs already have land mines placed throughout...we wear our LaCrosse rubber work boots in the back. Before dark, they are back in the enclosure having their evening snack (a grain or pasta along with a veggie or fruit) and then get bolted inside the coop (8X10 Lifetime garden shed) for the night. Keeps them out of trouble and keeps out the critters. Another neighbor had all her flock but one taken over two nights by a raccoon. Her husband caught a big 60 pound sow raccoon in a "live" trap the third night. Of course it went in the trap live, but didn't come out that way...
