Unconventional/Low Visibility Shelter

I found this interesting

http://www.snipercountry.com/Articles/IRDetection.asp

I dont think it gives away secrets but its interesting nonetheless

Sometimes when I come late into a long thread, I kinda skip over the in between threads. I'll read the OP and the first page or so. Then I generally jump to somewhere close to the end. If I had done so this time I would have missed this post from Myal.

So I was wondering how many people read this article and might care to comment. Myal recommended it, and I got a lot out of it. It's a LONGISH :) read, but that ok because there is so much good/new (new to me anyway) information that really nails down the strengths and weaknesses of FLIR.

Short answer, it's all wrong. I can see how you got it, but it's totally incorrect.:) PM me if you want specifics. And fornificate isn't a word, as far as I can find. However you did give the correct definition of fornication. In the Bible, its fornicate, not fornificate. Likewise PM me if you want to discuss that further.:)

Oh SNAP. Yeah, my bad, I misspelled that. I meant fornicate. :D I will PM you, I would like to see what you have to say. Sorry for the hijacking. I will pay attention not to do that again.

A few years ago now , my brother blew thru a random breath test stop on his bike .
I forget what his bike was , it was japanese and HUGE , he thought he was topping 200kms when he blew threw the stop , just cruising home , a couple cars tried to catch him , but didnt have a hope in hell , then he noticed the spotlight of the chopper flicking round not far from him m he switched the bikes lights off , and nailed it harder but couldnt shake it he snuck into a stairwell and sat tight for ages , listening on his scanner to the cops till they gave up , gave it some time and then snuck out and was TRYING to go home nice like when a patrol car flashed him ... so he ran again the chopper was on him fast this time

... he did some SERIOUS ducking and weaving and hammering thru suburbia and eventually got home , stashed the bike in the garage ( underground garage ) and went inside grabbed an iced cofee and flopped on the lounge , flicked on the tube ...

his girl friend began asking questions . "how was your day honey ? hey , whats that weird light outside and that thumping sound ?

He replies with something like "Thats probably the police chopper "

"honey , its like its right over us !"

after he didnt get up and go out for a look ...

"honeeeyyyy , do you want to tell me anything ?"

" No ,not till that chopper goes away , anyway "...

he didnt get booked for that stunt either , but where for fun he would go stir up a cop and get chased for a bit , having to shake a chopper was seriously SERIOUSLY hard and scared him , he said it was like it could see where he had been right up to tracking him to his block of flats .

I reckon that chopper had FLIR , and was following his heat trail but thats just my theory tho .

THe article I posted seemed to me to be highlighting two things , first , break up the thermal man shaped image , turn your image into a pile of stuff image if you cant hide it behind or under something

and second , the hardest part to me was how to dont warm up a room in a sposed to be cold dead building ?

I seriously hope I never have to evade this gadget

MW , now might be a really good time to just let it go and drop it .
Just my thoughts .

Myal,
Awesome awesome awesome E+E with low-vis shelter story. Your bro should work for the CIA, if he doesn't already, that is. After that story, he might just get an offer. :)

Its a true story , his girlfriend still spews at how calm he was coming in to watch TV after the kinda chase he was just in , .. his version of it was that he was looking to see if he was on the news tho :)

last year we went to a show and the there was a chopper fitted up with FLIR doing low flying demos and taking VIPs for rides , I seen it as they came up from behind a rise near the showground , it kinda hit me then that with that tech , ya got no-where to hide , just nowhere , and it suprised me how close they got before I realised they were there , choppers aint quiet but they can be if the pilot wants to be .. admittedly , there was fairground ruckus going on nearby at th time to hide the noise tho ...

that chopper looking at me scared me , seriously scared me . I know I had no reason to worry right then , but if it wasnt friendlies looking at us ... on foot , a mans got no hope to get away or hide , youre done .

I seriously would not be playing with the cops like that, especially when they have a chopper! You get serious time for that, without mentioning the possibility of crashing into a pedestrian or innocent couple in a small car with a baby in the back... and the hospitalization? Ouch!

Anyways guys, sorry for the previous trolling. :o

As far as low visibility, foliage green clothing is my personal choice. Also, anything with a greyish aquamarine color would do good IMHO, and use dead branches with leaves and keep them as low to the ground as possible while you dig out a small trench below them just enough to squeeze your body in. I am sure throwing leaves on top seriously wouldn't hurt either, as one looks over it and passed, trained or not, I would say they would have difficulty spotting it unless the leaves were seemingly freshly turned over without having been rained on.

As far as infrared, I am sure that if I was in a serous E&E scenario, if I was lucky enough to find water, I would get naked and wipe as much thick mud all over my body in as many layers as I could, and then put my clothes back on over it if I felt I had five minutes to spare to do this of course but what do I know, I am not trained in this but as of right now, that is what I would do. Might help mask the scent too.

....Use the earth as insulation if you are cold ...

On a factual note, the earth will act as a heatsink if you lay directly on it. That is, it will suck the heat out of you, making you colder. That's why there's a sleeping pad called ThermaRest. You need some sort of insulation to keep you warm.

We had a guy here in MO a few years back who killed a couple people and took to the woods to evade capture. His name was alis ben johns. He killed a deer and skinned it. Wore the skin over his boots to throw off the dogs, worked too. He managed to evade capture for quite a while, living off the land, and constantly moving. He ended up being shot, wounded and treated at the hospital here in sedalia. I got to deliver the food to his room. Crazy guy. He just camod himself with branches and the like, and rested in trees. He also broke into some houses and stole food and supplies.

Low visability shelter is whatever you can do in a hurry to not disturb the natural scenery of the landscape, or you will be seen.

Hey brian- Havent seen you around much, been super busy, huh? Nice to know youre always lurkin, watchin out, drawin a bead on violators.......

Oh man this is so true!!

Animal skins on the boots to fool dogs, eh? I'd have never thought it would work, but that's a good idea. Good post, j williamms. Any idea how they did finally corner him, since he didn't give himself up?

Thanks for the link MW. I've never heard Ron talk, so this is kind of a treat for me.

No prob dude. I once saw a clip of him shaving a charcoaled monkey, and then chomping down on it like he was a cannibal. The poor creature looked like a crispy 1 year old kid

Heres a link to the case http://www.missourinet.com/capitalpunishment/Case_notes/Johns_Alis.htm

It tells about what he did, and how the arrest went down. My father is a retired deputy here in mo, and talked with the us marshals and state troopers bout the specifics as far as the woodsmen stuff goes. He was a great woodsman, guys said he was the kind of guy you could walk over and not even know he was there. Dude flipped out from meth, and killed a bunch of people. I remember everyone was buyin up guns and watchin their property carefully. He was breakin into houses just to kill w/o reason. Hes on death row now.

He evaded capture for 6 months livin in the woods, emerging only to kill, and take what he needed.

just thought i would add, i realized i never added it before;

i always tend to camp low impact and low vis when i get out for overnighters. it is nice to just be kinda off the grid, so that people don't know you are there and so that you leave the area for other to enjoy (or for you to enjoy at a later date).

themes like this transfer well into evasion situations, because they are basically the same principles (though, as it was pointed out, E&E is likely to be moving alot and not really setting up a proper shelter for a night's sleep). its good to do some "stealth camping" just for practice, and its fun to do too. you can pretend to be the woods-ninja you always wanted to be as a kid, but for real ;)
