United States Postal Service !!!!

For the most part I have had very good success using USPS. I do have an issue right now that is just plain lousy though.

I mailed a pocket knife to Russia via Express Mail with "pocket knife" as the description on the Customs form. After the knife failed to be delivered, I filed an insurance claim with USPS. Now several weeks later I received a letter stating that they were denying my claim because I had mailed an item prohibited by Russia and they quoted the following:

Country Conditions for Mailing | Russia
Firearms of all kinds, including parts thereof, ammunition, swords, cutlasses, bayonets, lances and similar arms.

A pocket knife does no even come close to fitting any of the descriptions above and "pocket knife" is the exact description that I used on my Customs Declaration and Dispatch Note.

USPS has accepted my payment for their insurance numerous times but when it comes time to pay out they're really grasping at straws to get out of their end of our contract. I'm very disappointed and have written a letter appealing their decision but I do not have high hopes.

I know this thread is a little dated, but....

I used to have problems of all kinds with packages being delivered. Most of the time they would show as delivered, but I wouldn't get them. Turned out I was the victim of "Mailbox Shopping". This occurs in rural areas where people follow the mail carriers and do their shopping in you mail box or front porch.

I solved the problem by getting the smallest box available at a PO in a larger town that I usually go to 2 - 3 x /week that also accepts UPS and Fedex drop offs. (My "local" PO is so small they don't do that.) When my "almost always too large for the mailbox" package shows up containing books, knives, hatchets, axes, bayonets, clothing, foundry equipment, I get an email that I have mail and a key in my box to go get the stuff out of a drop box. If it is too large to fit, I have to wait in line during working hours but that is seldom.

In over 600 packages over the last 2 years, I have had major problems only 2 times - once a package had a status of "In Des Moines" for 63 days before they found it. It was a Boker Mk1 and I really wanted it rather than file a claim for reimbursement. It eventually showed. The next was with a box that arrived soaking wet, crushed, corner torn open and no vintage Camillus 2 blade Barlow knife. Seller reimbursed me and according to her, she filed a claim w/ her local PO using my pictures of the arrival state. They told her she would get the insurance reimbursement in about 3 weeks. As that was 2 weeks before the gov't shut down, she may be waiting a LONG time.

I have had instances where the packages were a day or 3 late, but the vast majority of them were early or on time. with respect to the projected delivery dates.

My solution may not work for everyone, but shifting my packages to PO delivery has solved 99% of my problems. YMMV.

As I'm a European, I'm the recipient of USPS services. Three days from N.York State to here the last one! All I can say is I've been very satisfied with delivery from the US, it could of course have something to do with our local P.O. too....

well I can tell you living in the states, they cant even get 1 money order 2 states over in a couple of days, takes a week usually. ignorant, stupid crap..happened a couple times with me..

My experience has been generally good with the USPS lately. I've ordered blades from Cutleryshoppe in Idaho, and received them to NH in 2 days.
I even got something from LA to NH that left on a Friday at like 4:30 local time, and was delivered in NH at 10:30 Monday morning.
However I got a new carrier on my route, and mail has been showing up really late like 2:30-4:45 PM.
The previous carrier was between 10:30-12:00 at the latest. When I'm out working I don't care, but when I'm home waiting for a package, it gets annoying.
Many times if it doesn't go out by 9:30 I'll just have them hold it at the post office and I'll pick it up.

When I was a kid my dad ordered a weed wacker from JC Whitney I think, and after 3 weeks it never arrived. Apprently the USPS lost it. How do you lose a freakin' weed wacker ??? The thing is 4 feet long after all. I think someone had sticky fingers. It took another 2 weeks to get them to replace it, then we finally got it.

my ''mailman who brings my mail daily is supergreat.his old station wagon on dirt roads in poor condition is no challenge for him he brings it no matter what.
however last week I ordered a BDU top and it was sent 2nd day priority.well I saw on Saturday it was ''out for delivery'',yet not to my house??? wth?? I called the post office where the tracking said it was and the postal worker told me he had it and it had my address,my zip code and my name on it and he could not figure out why on earth did it wind up 100 miles from me.i told him I couldn't figure that out either.
its due to show up this week but I will believe it when it shows. the PO is like a box of chocolate-ya never know what yer gonna get.
keep on rockin in the free world.

I don't have trouble with packages, just MO's. One time, an MO took two weeks to deliver, and another occasion, TWO of them weren't even delivered. Had to send $135 worth of MO again.

I personally like USPS, UPS is slow as can be for there ground service and anything above ground services is expensive, unless it's a business address. Same with Fed Ex, there prices are ridiculous!! In my book USPS Priority flat rate boxes are the best.
Just my opinion though.

as long as you are not shipping switchblades then you have to use ups or fed ex
