Talking about the Hunt Brothers and their bid to lock up the silver market, the thing that busted them in the end was the futures market in silver. Wall Street and Bay Street smarties started selling the Hunts silver that wouldn’t exist until a future date. Because of the way the two markets settled the Hunts ended up buying silver that didn’t exist yet but by the time they received the silver that they had bought it did exist. There was a two day window of opportunity and a bunch of people made truck loads of money. I think this means we need a Buck futures market. We can sell these guys Bucks that haven’t been made yet. We may need CJ’s help making this work.

This auction is a prime example of prices going nuts. This auction for a Buck Titanium 186 ended at $204.

Mike, I posted a few days ago about that one or one like it and another that went for even more, I couldn't find the post but think it was $284.00. Might be still in the completed auction section of the bay if your interested. Preston

Apparently, it's worth that much to someone. That's all that matters to the seller. (& buyer)
Mick,
I understand the concept of capitalism, however, I think that some of the recent bidding associated with Buck knives has been due to an over abundance of unbridled exuberance rather than real market demand. It's my sense that the average sale has gone up quicker than the overall market would allow. I can't back that up, but I intend to go to a couple of knife shows around here in the northwest in the next couple of months to try to make sense out of it. I want to be able to bid from a better sense of what the real market value of a particular knife is rather than simply watching bids being run up and spending more than a knife is really worth. Right now I really don't have anything more than a gut feeling.

Well good luck, but trying to find a real market value on a knife (or anything) these days isn't as easy as it used to be. We can thank (?) the internet for that. It's a whole new ballgame now, with no rhyme or reason to explain why some things are bringing ridiculously high prices. Unbridled exuberance? No doubt. Shill bidders? No doubt. Finding something you wouldn't normally see? No doubt. And on & on. I stopped trying to figure it out long ago & just accepted it as the nature of the beast. Personally, if I see something I like, I decide how high I'll go on it & hope it's high enough to win. Like you & everyone else, I try to get a ballpark of Market value, but bottom line is I decide what my value is on any given item. I put in my highest bid for that 186 & it didn't cut it. I didn't lose any sleep over not getting it. If people want something bad enough, they're gonna pay whatever it takes to get it. I know I've paid higher on some things than I probably should have. But if I really wanted them, then I was willing to do that. (within what I felt was reasonable) Everyone has their own limit on how high they'll go on something, & some have no limits whatsoever. Let the bidding begin.

I'm starting to think that way, too...I'm thinking someone puts in a $1,000 bid on a 186, NIB, w/clip & sheath, screws, paper etc...They must rationalize it by thinking that *no one else* will possibly go that high...maybe $204...but no more...

...and of course they get it...

I just hope I'm around when two of these clowns collide... :D

So did I. :o And it was at the upper end of what my threshold of pain would allow, which was well above what I thought it was worth. Like you, I'm not losing any sleep over it. Another one will show up before too long as they always do. I'm just scratching my head trying to figure it all out.

I recently followed an auction for an old, empty box of Savage Arms ammo with the Indian head on it, (I repeat an empty box, no ammo) sell for $537. Even if the box was full, that's still insane! Actually, it's beyond insane, whatever that is. And in the following weeks, many auctions of old Savage ammo boxes (some w/ammo) followed, yet none of them approached that price. Not even close. Was that auction a scam? In my mind, it probably was, hoping to bring out the suckers with the ensuing auctions. But then again, maybe it was legit. Like I said, I gave up a long time ago trying to figure it all out. I came to the conclusion it's a waste of time & energy.

Some of these bidders may be doing like I am, and probably some of you, in buying any (vintages) that will either add to or enhance the collection.

By enhance, if I can get a better one than one like I have, then the worst of the two (or three) will go back on the market.

My bay id would have been in that list a year ago at this time.

But some also buy them, admire them a while, and resell. Probably at a profit.

I will say that I usually will not go up against one of you when bidding, if I can figure out your bayid. Mike and Dave make that pretty easy. Unless of course it is something I really feel strongly about :D But I am slowing down a lot on wants. Haven't bought a knife off the bay now in well, almost a week.

Rat, your almost cured:D :D :D.

There was a post awhile ago where folks could post their ebay id...
