Useless knives

Maybe it's something that you don't like personally, but it's not something I would call useless. Maybe more of a collector's item, but not useless.

My BIL, the used car salesman, says "There's a butt for every seat."

All of the knives posted in this thread are made and sold and purchased by somebody smitten by them as a collector.

Do you have an Opinel 2? I do. My kids gave to me as a joke and I received it in good fun. It's a novelty item. A bit of marketing funny-business. All in good fun. Ok... maybe a keychain version of the Opinel 2 can open taped packages but honestly, we're all adult enough to recognize knives made to be used and knives that are made to be collected and not really used.

Here's the add copy from the Victorinox web site (editorial comments added).
Being the biggest collector’s item, this knife has it all, and then some. Its credentials are large-scale and propel it into a class of its own. Composed of 118 parts, housing 82 functions, weighing in at 350 grams (that's 12.5 ounces, kids) and at 65 mm wide (that's over 2.5" wide), its versatility knows no limits. And the craftsmanship is top too: every Swiss Champ XAVT is manufactured in more than 500 meticulous steps and adeptly assembled by hand.

I see your point. I think the perspective of the image in your first post made it look, to me, like a regular Swiss Champ sized knife with a few more tools. However, now that I have looked it up, I think want it even more. If it wasn't north of $400, I'd put one in all of my glove-boxes. Seems useful.

Years ago, cutlers used to make "exhibition knives". They were for display purposes, to show off the amazing skills of the craftsmen.

For the record, I have both a Cybertool 34 on my desk that I use for small tasks when I'm too lazy to get up and dig around in the toolbox for proper pliers, screwdrivers, etc. Works just fine. I also use an Opinel #2 to open mail sometimes. Neither are use-less.

But I think all this discussion is missing the point of the thread: post amusing pictures of poorly designed "knives"

Okay, that's all great and stuff, but the topic of the thread is useless knives. Are you saying you couldn't use that knife? Does it really compare with some of the other offerings? Or....is this yet another thinly veiled snipe at victorinox?

For an example of that from Victorinox, there's the Equestrian, which works fine...except they put the hoof pick right next to the tooth pick. Would have been better just to omit that one or put an extra set of tweezers in it or something. If you ever actually used the hoof pick you'd never want to use that toothpick ever again. :D

The toothpick would still work great for picking pocket lint out of the charging port on your phone though. ;)

I'm not trying to overthink this or get too serious in a fun thread but I believe there is a distinction between "useless" and "unusable". Some of the knives shown CAN be used (usable) but would be ridiculous for almost any real uses (useless). o_O Just 2 more of my cents. ;)

Would you actually carry and use that? Seriously.

I get the Farmer and Climber. Not my cup of tea, but whatever.

But this thing? Does anybody really carry one and use one on a regular basis? Hands up.

I often carry one in my pack and everything up through the Champ works for me. It may not be the most comfortable thing to use, but the tool kit can sometimes get you out of a jam. If there is a serious problem, this thing can provide hours of entertainment, which is often better than having you run off in a random direction.

Haven't lost a toothpick but I have bought a couple extra tweezers. Love those things.

I've managed to hold on to my tweezers, I just can't seem to keep up with the toothpicks. o_O

I bought a set of replacement pieces in a little partitioned box off the big river site, tooothpicks, scissor springs, etc. Handy to have on hand even though I haven't gone through many pieces yet.
