User mods on RAT Cutlery

I think the "don't buy it" sentiment was geared towards a rash of new members who were stating their intent was to buy the knife solely for the purpose of abusing it to destruction and the "we appreciate you" sentiment is geared to all those who take personal responsibility for their actions and actually contribute to this forum.

I see no distinct difference to being in a restaurant or bar where a group at a table are asked to leave because they are being disruptive, then the people at the next table over are thanked for their patronage - and for being understanding about the whole mess with the other table.

If I ever break a knife due to abuse, I'd be more than happy to buy the new one. Beats the embarassment of having to disclose the knuckleheaded move that broke the knife.

Thanks for clearing that up....

Bah--they'd want to know anyhow for research purposes, so you would do well to let them know about it. You just wouldn't have to blab about it on the forum. :D

Horn Dog: Do the knives come shiney like that and with black handles? Never seen that before :P But I kind of like it!

RAT: I used to be really uninformed, and ignorant. All I did was play video games, football or soccer, build bikes and cars, and go to class. A few months ago, I was out with a friend testing out my new Nikon Camera (which broke and died) , heres the funny thing...he had his rat knives and gear in a bag in the back seat of his car, but he wasn't a car guy. He actually neglected his vehicle.

I am going to skimp on the details cause I don't want to bore anyone, we drove around testing the camera from late afternoon into night, his car eventually broke down, and we were stranded...realizing we also didnt know where we were because we were blasting music and just having a good time; I myself paniced. No cell signal. No passing cars, and I noticed we actually drove so far so long we didn't see normal road. It looked old and worn...grape fields and other trees all around us.

Longer story shorter and details omitted, my benchmade knife was near useless. I kept pressing to try to walk back to somewhere, anywhere that was in fact nowhere cause we were REALLY REALLY far from anywhere....

Few days later we got help...but his two rat knives i know one was a 3, not sure if other one was a 5 or 6. Were abused and destroyed, no longer pretty looking, but they did everything from cut down a dried old pistachio tree, to grape trees, making lashings/ties from shaving a bunch and variety of young sapplings and trees....

Dispatching and cleaning rabbits, and etc from the local area...his knives did alot...his words? Should've stayed with the car, my thoughts? What if nobody comes down this damn road? ugh...

My benchmade broke, his knives held up. They are now displayed in a glass case in his place, and he already has newer replacements he bought new, he said rat has a no questions asked no bs hassel warranty. I said you going to replace them? He said no. The knives did exactly what they were meant to do, and did NOT fail, craftsmanship and durability. All in all, thats whats spurred me to look around and also ask random Qs and why I want to take the courses you and mike offer. Its why I tried to read as much as I could find on your site, anything...everything. And why I have been reading up as much in general as I can. Just so if anything ever happens again I can have a chance. Cause I may next time be by myself...or may have to help manage and take care of others. Like what was done for me. made me realize also that everyone lives a comfy and reliant life, you guys and other members here, who do what you all do; inspires me. I don't want to be that guy I was who couldn't make a fire, without matches, who didn't have even a basic knife.......something reliable...

Who cant catch, clean, and cook a wild animal.....

I know probably doesn't mean much, but your guys daily grind, is my reward, and I thank you for doing what you do. You and other members help a nobody like myself whos so uninformed, become educated, and grow.

Thank you so much!

I really like the attitude and train of thought that the ESEE team has, they mirror mine quite closly and thats amazing (because I feel as though we are a minority)

Keep rockin the Rats guys!

RAT knives aren't the prettiest or made of the "best" steel. However, they do reflect the personality of the designers: honest, no nonsense, get-the-job-done tools. And THAT's why I own them.

I must-- most respectfully and humbly-- disagree with this statement.

ESEE knives are sexy as socks on a rooster, at least to these eyes. Form following function and the evidence of Occam's Razor (the simplest answer is usually the best one) is like looking at a Bernini sculpture.

Or a hot, nekkid body...if that's your thing too...and who don't like a well toned, hot, nekkid body?

They're made of the best steel. They just aren't made of the latest flavor of the week. 1095 is proven and reliable when you do it right. And, oh brother, does Rowen do it right!

I will concur wholeheartedly with your sentiment of no nonsense, get-the-job-done tools. That they are. And then some.

VIVA LA ESEE5!!

Eff the Revolution, bring on the Apocalypse!!

I just wish I could find that "Don't buy our knives" sticky everyone is talking about...

I have to admit before I became a rataholic, I was purchasing a good amount of cold steel knives and while they do make some good cutlery there was something missing!!!! I found RAT while searching for general knife reviews and has since become my favorite and most trusted among many. It was the passion and confidence that RAT puts forth in there knives, warranty and philosophy. I am a new FM and joined because of RAT and have since thought it was my responsibility to show appreciation. So if you see this Jeff, Mike, Shon. THANK YOU!

Sorry, it's late, I'll contribute something useful tomorrow, but in the meantime: What's "Jimping"?

Thanks,

Al

THANKS OTIS!

Wow...that is an eye-opener and no mistake...

That is one hell of a testament to Jeff and Mike's belief in their company.

My respect level just multiplied by about 100 for you guys!

Just read through 5 pages...... title says "User mods on RAT Cutlery" I was hoping to see pics.:)

Damn you just got to respect a company with a warranty like this.My hats off to you blokes. But if I mess up my blade or abuse it and its not due to a flaw or prob with the blade I'll replace it myself. And I'll probably apologise to you for ruining a fine piece of gear.

Jimping is the term for the notches filed into the spine of a knife for finger/thumb traction. Often they're decorative as well as functional, and there are names for some traditional patterns, like "vine & leaf".

Boo ya. I hate the prevailing attitude of entitlement in our country. Cheers for accepting resonsibilty for ones actions and not counting on someone else(gov, or person) to save your ass. Thanks for promoting responsibility, ESEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Being an aircraft mechanic for about 35 years, common sense tells you not to abuse the tools you make a living with. I feel that way today about my knives and my old faithful tools. In the outdoors our knives are our tools. Take good care of them. They could save your life or a loved one. Thanks ESEE for your dedication.

With all due respect to everyone here, I'm probably making some sort of a mistake, but this is my first post here so I'll survive. So my apologies if I went over the line somewhere in advance.

After reading this thread and what has been said so far I noticed one thing - people that have RAT or ESEE knives respect their tools and take care of them. Quite recently I've had quite a few run ins with people that don't, and a warranty like the one ESEE knives gives is to them just a loop in the system to abuse what they have.
Now maybe it's my mindset, the way I was brought up or something like that, since I am still fairly young and the biggest reason for coming here was to learn from people that don't have the god complex, but simply know stuff better than I do.

Anyway I'm drifting off so I'll get to my point. I was and still am waiting for the izula folder to come out, no matter how long it takes. But due to a few reasons my camping habits will have to change and 2 of the knives I was looking at were rc-4 and rc-5.
Mr. Randall with the first post in this thread you said a lot of things that are honest and straight to the point. That's something that I respect, and with all of this said I'm looking forward to becoming one of your customers. And it's because you didn't try to sell your product, you were simply honest.
As to my decision between rc-4 and rc-5, I'll ask the members here for advice.
