USPS Lost my knife

I had USPS leave a package with 2 custom knives in the mail box even though it had signature confirmation on it. When I called the post office the lady said that basically paying for signature required was a waste of money and that it meant nothing. The USPS seems to make up the rules as they go along.

My mail"woman" has left notices that she was not able to deliver in the mailbox and never tried to deliver. She has also driven up to the house to only turn around and leave without leaving a package and then leave the "No one home" note.

I think everybody has one of "those" delivery drivers.

That driver's seat must be awfully comfortable.

It's the USPS's fault.
Ever see their commercial where they show a guy dropping some brake pads in a box & closing it up using just the glue strip on the flap to seal it then handing it off to the carrier?
No padding,no filler, nothing, just drop it in & yer good to go,yesiree.
Some dimwit sees that & thinks cool, that's quick & easy, thanks for making my already simple life easier USPS!

If the seller did have insurance for anything over $50.00 then the cost of shipping would reflect that & not the flat rate $5.80 on the postage label on the box in the bag.
Plus there would be a separate insurance form stub/lable with a bar code & number affixed to the box.
That's assuming the sender took the package to the PO himself & dealt with a clerk, which the labels indicate.
Self help kiosks & online printed labels are different in my experience.
If, IF the knife is worth more than $50 the seller has some esplainin' to do.

Also does the city on the postage label match the senders city or the city the last sorting facility to handle it is located?

I had a Money Order in a Pri envelope go missing at a sorting facility up here & a well packaged knife go missing somewhere in Texas after leaving a sort facility on the way to it's final destination.
I had the knife insured & the buyer got his money back & the MO was covered by the USPS so there was no financial loss.
Oh yeah, I also had a maker here on BF send me a knife without a sheath or any type of protection on the blade, in a flat rate document envelope.(the thin cardboard type)and the blade tip was poking out of a big hole in the side of the envelope.
I was amazed no one was injured & the knife wasn't confiscated.(everyone got lucky on that one)
(The maker had his wife do the shipping that week he said & he's since been banned with last known whereabouts in MO somewhere.)

Ya just never know whats going to happen with your package once it leaves your hands so it's best to take every precaution to ensure it arrives safe & sound.
No rattling around in the box & tape, tape, tape it up.

I hope this situation works out to the positive for you KC.

Never have worried about insuring before as a seller, but now seeing this it looks more worrysome.

How much does insurance cost for sending a ~$300 knife via priority mail?

Jeff,

For domestic rates on insured items you can check here. It looks like the USPS gives you an initial 100.01 rate for the package and then charges you on the declared value of the item. This link goes into detail on how to file a claim if needed. I hope this sheds a little light on the subject for you.

Sorry to hear you got treated this way as well, indeed a sad bit of business. Best of luck getting it sorted out sir.

Well if the seller was top notch he would refund you immediately, and deal with USPS him self. As far as insurance goes, I insure what I cant afford to refund if something goes wrong. If you are however willing to work with the seller and wait for him to refund you don't wait to long. I hope you paid via goods.

What everyone is failing to mention is that this is the seller's responsibility. He shipped the knife, therefore he is the one responsible for the losses during shipping. The insurance doesn't affect the recipient. It is his guarantee if the knife gets lost (which it did). He goofed by only including $50 insurance. Now he owes you your money back and is taking a $100 hit. USE PROPER INSURANCE, PEOPLE!

Same here. I wanted to send my Gold class benchmade to get sharpened by someone and now im nervous.

The claim is filled, maybe I should have gone through all this a different way but, oh well, shitty learning experience. I think I'll contact the seller about the $50 dollar insurance on a $100 knife.

I use enough clear boxing tape on those flat rate boxes, there's no way they be can be accidently opened (even if crushed or run over).

Their site is still pretty unclear. As a seller, I want to know what I will need to pay in advance before ever setting out for the post office. I wish they had a calculator on the usps site so I could make an estimate on what it would cost to fully insure a $120 knife, $300 knife and so on. I don't want to just have to ask at the counter as its going out since the price may be unexpectedly high.. I just want to know what to expect so there is no sticker shock - This is also so I can incorporate the cost of insurance into the price of the knife in the future.

Thats BS "better luck next time" sure sounds like they dont care, it definitely looks like a thief but who could know for sure. I dont sell knives but when I send them in for warranty repairs or whatever I always insure, its just not worth it if something happens and insurance is only a few extra bucks. Today I sent off my kershaw knockout (the blade cracked above the thumbstud for no apparent reason, strangest thing I have had happen to a knife) and a leek because it has lock rock, I paid about $3 extra for $130 of insurance, totally worth it. I hope this situation works out well for you, it sucks that things like this happen.

You can. Just go the Usps website, then to calculate shipping price. Select the type of box you want to use then click next. On the next screen there will be an option to add services and you can add in the insurance amount you need and it will give you the cost.

Someone at the USPS may have stolen the knife.

Or, judging by the way the white cardboard is bent, the box may have simply popped the adhesive and dumped the contents.

Either way, it's the seller's problem and they should refund your money or send a replacement knife immediately. It's up to them to collect the insurance from the USPS. And if they played the odds and skimped on insurance, it's their tough luck.

USPS sucks. I've had a recently purchased knife "out for delivery" in a neighboring city (different zip code) for 2 days when its supposed to be delivered to me. Trying to get a human to answer the phone is impossible. The city its out for delivery in has 12 post offices and the specific zip code has 3. I'm getting pissed. I feel your pain brother.

Ive never EVER heard of a usps paying insurance for a knife ???? Has anyone on this forum ever received $$ from usps for a knife ??

MODS: MOVE IF IN WRONG FORUM

So I bought a knife from a private seller here last week and according to USPS tracking it was due to arrive on Thursday the 26th. Well, it never did. I checked the tracking everyday since it shipped and it only updated once after the package left the sorting facility on the 24th and it stayed on that update until today. My girlfriend got the package from the mailbox and it was the opened, empty flat rate box inside a clear USPS bag with an "Apology" letter saying "sorry we lost your stuff, better luck next time.
I filled a claim but it's the first time the USPS has done this to me. I've dealt with FedEx/Amazon before in a similar situation and Amazon(not FedEx) dealt with it really well. Honestly though, my hopes aren't too high in this situation. Has anyone ever had a similar case?

Did you pay with paypal? If so, you can file a paypal claim and get your $$ back. If you paid more than $200 it has to be shipped with signature confirmation, and that one wasn't.

I think someone that works in the sorting facility was probably opening boxes looking for stuff to keep and they found the knife and then just sent the opened box to be shipped after they found what they were looking for.

Sometimes the automated machines can damage stuff. I had an envelope torn open because there was a pair of nice chopsticks and it went through some automated rollers but it couldn't bend so the chopsticks broke.

Insured is the only way to ship. I just shipped 2 large flat rate boxes with 9 knives in each for $17.45 each. Insurance for $2400 was $31.75 on 1, and $2000 insurance on the other was $26.75. Small price to pay on a $4000 knife deal.
The $50 per parcel insurance with tracking, just doesn't cut it.
