USPS Lost my knife

I will admit- a lot of postal workers are great.....but some aren't worth a stamp. It's the few a-holes that give us a bad reputation. A customer sees one mailman at a bar - now we are ALL drunks.

I think that's the case for most customer service oriented jobs.... it's either hit or miss.

They just had a similar post on another forum about the usps dropping the ball on several occasions not to mention the whole insurance deal. I've had a custom knife come up missing out of a package and it was insured. USPS would not pay the claim due to the fact that it was "delivered" and because it did not have a "retail" receipt. I have heard from numerous people that they rarely pay out a claim and the insurance is more of a scam for more money from the shipper. It was mentioned in this thread already that they make up the rules as they go which clearly seems to be the case. However, registered mail is the safest route to send a high dollar item. It is scanned and locked up at every stop or facility it passes thru.
Either way unless you are buying direct and getting the item in hand from a store before leaving, there will always be associated risk. Best thing to do is cover all bases and ensure that every measure is taken for the item to get to the buyer the safest way possible.

Well, USPS paid my claim. There was only $50 of insurance. I think it's all about providing evidence.

From now on, I'm requesting full insurance or registered mail on knives I buy on here. Paying for it is worth not losing a knife.

Wow that was quick. But still, IMO what you had to do was the seller's responsibility. Filing a claim, only getting $50 back, etc etc. IMO you are entitled to getting back the full amount from paypal/seller.

This is why it is the seller's responsibility to buy and claim insurance.

The buyer goes through PayPal to recover his loss, and the seller recovers what he can from USPS.

Exactly!

This story is still fishy. Why only get back $50 on a $ 100+ knife? Makes no sense unless you paid with other than paypal good, which is the only safe way to pay. You should never need to ask a seller for insurance as that is their responsibility to protect themselves.

I see a lot of sales in the Exchange here where the seller says he is not responsible if the knife doesn't arrive (usually in overseas transactions).

The problem with that is, if you use PayPal, you lose. PayPal will not honor your warning, they will reimburse the buyer.

Very true, but isn't that only valid if using paypal goods?

I also see sellers stating that shipping insurance is extra, even in the US, and even when accepting paypal plus 3% (ie paypal goods but buyer pays fees). Sellers who only use paypal goods Don't make such statements because they know when using paypal goods the insurance is on the seller and never on the buyer.

Responsibility of deliver and insurance are always on the seller when a transaction is done the correct way.

At least he got something, I preordered a T4 from Brous and USPS lost the knife. Never got a thing from USPS or Brous and have been out $300 since November.

I've been really lucky over the years. I have only had one item (1960s near mint Camillus Barlow) lost by the USPS. When I got the package, it was soaking wet in an envelope similar to what the OP received. The box was ripped at one and and the box was just full of balls of newspaper. Fortunately, I got my money back via fleabay's buyer's guarantee. The seller filed a claim w/ USPS, but I don't know how it turned out for him. The seller had just put the knife loose in with the wads of newspaper. If he had taped the knife to the box side before sealing, it would not have slid out through the hole torn in the wet box.

On the other hand, the number of lost knives could have been REALLY high. I have had NUMEROUS knives come in poorly secured. It's amazing how many idiots put a knife w/o a sheath in an ENVELOPE, with a little newspaper wrapped around it and expecting it to arrive safely. At least a couple of dozen times, a knife has shown up with the tip poking through the envelope or the box.

Some people carry that mentality where they think, "Money is in my hand now, I don't give a sh*t what happens after this". For me personally.... besides etiquette mostly my safe packaging is to ensure that the knife gets to the buyer because I know until it is in his hands.... I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS.

Luckily for me most of the time the knife comes adequately packaged and in some occasions you can see a LOT of care and effort was put in the packaging. In a few rare cases I was completely dumbfounded how a person can ship anything with that little care. Ironically the most expensive knife I've ever bought was the most poorly packaged.

I'm proud of how I pack my knives. My family business is in tea, so I have metal containers used for tea, I wrap the knives in bubble wrap, put it in the container, and tape every visible surface, and do another layer.

My 2cents
As a long time member here
I go by a few rulz
1= FULLY INSURE...It is """MY RESPONSIBILTY""" to make certain the KNIFE GETS to the person I sent it too..
2= I TAPE and Double and Triple package the knife inside-- SO if a Postal THIEF is present and you the Mail Folks get sloppy.. I do my best to make the knife SECURE---Hopefully--TAPED VERY VERY well so any thief will just by pass it..SIMPLY because it will TAKE TOO much time to get to the prize.
You cant begin to imagine the times... I have dealt with sellers and or a trade IN BF..where the knife was wrapped in one layer of bubble wrap.. Then put in a baggie and THROWN in the box....and one piece of tape too secure the end.
What are people thinking....??????
You have to follow up with the receiving party as well.
I Personally... Track the knife or item and TAKE TIME to shoot them emails and update them...Its simply a courtesy..
