I talked to Dave the other day. He said that when the dogs got out, he only had one shoe on and then quickly got a house slipper. You have to picture Dave, who needs a cane to walk without falling on his face, trying to catch two big dogs racing across the desert, and he's wearing mismatched shoes, and a slipper that doesn't stay on.
It's dark, but Dave gets the dogs, Blue and Jake. They all sit down together, and that is when Dave fell asleep. I think he had lost the slipper by that time. He woke up in the middle of a brush fire, started by unknown persons. I don't know how extensive the brush fire was or if it was just around Dave.
Dave said that he could hear fire equpment nearby, but couldn't see anything. Probably sirens also. It's dark, fire is everywhere, and Dave starts yelling, "HELP ME! HELP ME!" over and over and over. Of course he is trying to get the fire out that is on and around him. Dave had told the dogs to leave and shoo'd them away. I guess they took off.
I believe he said that he finally laid down in a small crevice to stay away from the flames. A firefighter was not too far away and Dave could see him, so he started yelling again. I have no idea where the fire engines or trucks were in relation to Dave.
The firefighter locates Dave, picks him up and carries him over his shoulder/back, just like in the movies. I don't know if the paramedics were already on scene or not at this point. Initially they transported Dave to the hospital in Pahrump. But the hospital realized that they were not set up to provide the care he needed for his burns. That is when Dave was air vac'd to University Medical Center Burn Center.
I asked Dave about the dogs. One of the taxi guys has both dogs staying with him. Someone was going to take some food inside for the cats. So the animals are being cared for. Dave asked the female taxi driver how she found out he was in the hospital (she called him) and she said that it had been on the news about the fire and a guy who had been burned who lived on Z Street. She knew there weren't many people living on Z Street, so she looked into it. Dave has a couple of good friends in some of the taxi drivers.
That's all the news that's fit to print.
