Victorinox SAK Farmer...What's so special about them?...

i have a farmer and a bushcrafter and i just find that the bushcrafter's minimal tools fits me better - both in the woods and city...just a blade, saw, and awl so it's very slim and lightweight especially when i'm wearing office pants.

The Farmer is great for odd jobs around the farm when you don't want to drag out tools...

agreed- my bushcrafter gets a lot more carry time

I have to agree with SAK Guy, I find the Farmer to be very useful around the ranch. I believe the preference between the Bushcrafter (an excellent tool!) and the Farmer is more about venue of use than actual utility. I eventually would like to get a Bushcrafter for trail use.

Regards,
Ron

^ I'd agree with that assessment- mine is carried on the trail, if it was carried elsewhere I'd probably carry the Farmer more

I also felt the same way initially. I have a pile of various SAK's, so whoop-de-do about the Farmer. But after a little time and use my view changed. I now find it to be one of the most handsome, extremely compact, thicker blade stocked, tool useful models of the line. It is rare to find such a robust and useful multi use tool that will fit unnoticed in the watch pocket of your jeans, which is important to me......I have never owned a Bushcrafter though. So thanks for the comments. I am now off to check the Bushcrafter out. With all this said, and the many SAK variations that I own, I still have a sweet spot for my ancient Rucksack. And it will likely always be that way for me. But my old Ruck is nowhere near as compact as the Farmer.

yes, loosing the layer with the openers would make a super nice carrying farmer!!!
but wait, is the bushcrafter the same size as the farmer? i thought they were a little shorter?
i think whenever i've seen the alox bushcrafter, the price tag is about 2-3x that of a farmer?

i have both and they're the same length. the alox bushcrafter is indeed twice that of the farmer but only because it's exclusive to swiss bianco so they get to set the price on it unfortunately...at least the shield is red on it unlike the farmer which has the same color as whatever the rest of the handle is.

it'd be nice though for a plastic-handled version bushcrafter that's priced in the $20 range!

farmers... silver, black, & red... on the right is the harvester, neither i or the seller realized until i unpacked it that it wasn't a farmer, ha!

Some people don't like the Bushcrafter because they say it doesn't fill the hand as well as the Farmer, making for some discomfort in extended use. I have both and don't find that to be true -- and I have large-ish hands.

New to these forums. Looking at getting the farmer, as it fits my day to day with work and such. Wish they were still found for $15 like earlier posts in this thread  I can only find $30 and up (and not at REI unfortunately, I have that 20% off coupon)

Anyone still around doing custom sak work, or have parts to purchase for simple swaps? I don't need the can opener and would prefer the small electricians blade.

Thanks

Just bought a blue alox farmer. For work I use a mechanic the plyers are very helpful pulling nails out of walls I need to paint.

The farmer will be my EDC outside of work. Thanks for a great thread.👍

My Vic Farmer changed out the air filter and plugs in my van while I slept. I ask you, would a Leatherman do that !? :)

LOL, no your Leatherman would have left your van on blocks while he converted your tires and rims into cash.....

There's a guy on Pinterest who does a lot of SAK mods. But I don't know if he takes orders or only sells what he decides to make himself. Anyway, his stuff looks great:

Also, there's an Ebay seller I would recommend highly for SAK purchases. At the moment, he seems to have a whole bunch of Harvester models (now discontinued), which is the farmer with a small pruning/carving blade instead of the can opener. Bought from him a few times:

Thank you Roamad. He has some great looking mods indeed. I'm gonna try and get ahold of him somehow.

By the way. Are the red farmers not available any longer? I can't seem to track one down...

I rock a Pioneer every day. Cut off the poorly designed keyring for comfort and just toss it in my pocket. I find the driver layer to be too handy to give up for every day use, but I do have a Farmer that I typically favor when heading to the woods. The saw is all I really need for most trips and so I bring that over a dedicated saw. The one other negative is that the saw blocks the main blades nail nick. For the life of me I can't figure out why they don't turn the saw around, and make the key ring attachment pivot vs fixed. That said the Pioneer has been deemed the knife that does everything by my wife. Most recently it scraped corrosion off of the battery terminals on her car.
