The fastest and fairest way to do this would be a poll. We can hammer out steel (seems 1095 or O1 are the major front runners) grind (seems flat grind is way up there with scandi second) and scales (wood, or micarta seem the two most popular choices)

We do not have permission from Spark for logos, but as Gibson Fan mentioned we could go with W&S survival knife. Maybe numbering the blades as well. I email Spark regarding our thoughts and asked his permission/thoughts on the knife and will let you know what I find out when I have his answer. Either way, if the knife is just numbered I'm in:thumbup:

Please post your thoughts and if I missed something, let me know. ;) :D

I voted for a scandi pattern with fill flat grind!

Eddited to add: paying members only can vote in the poll so just cast your vote with a simple reply. Don't worry..... ya'll still count ;)

Flat grind, wood scales, looks about like the ones in the drawing. Then yes. Either steels ok with me since I don't know much about carbon.

Thanks tarmix. Lets try and keep the responses short, and easy to go through.

I vote for flat grind, basic utility style, carbon or tool steel, basic sheath with firesteel attachment.
Edit: Looks like poll votes are out of my league :) Please post a simple response if you can't use the poll function.

Does you knife not fit the "utility drop point"?

Sort of, but it's still only my idea and doesn't have input from other members. I don't want to be that selfish ;) I just favor that pattern more than Scandi styles in general.

I can't actually participate in the poll and depending on how much the knife is I might not be able to afford it but I really like the smaller (utility flat ground drop point) NWA design. I like it alot. I would like a good carbon or tool steel.

FWIW,
KR

i know the pics and descriptions and whatnot are in the other thread, but i think it would really help to have a pic or two for each vote option to go along with the poll. possible? my two cents. thanks for getting this going.

Example of the "utility flat ground drop point" This is just an example. Could have less handle contour, ect....

Example of pouch style sheath by our own Fiddleback:thumbup: Again just a example.

Example of the Scandi "woodslore" style knife. This is also the style of knife I have in mind but with a full flat ground blade.

Hope this helps.

Scandi Grind, carbon steel, green micarta handle, 1/8" thickness, Leather neck pouch sheath with FireSteel loop.

For those of you who are not that familiar with it, W2 is best described as "very clean 1095" with vanadium added, W1 being "very clean 1095" without the vanadium. which retards grain growth and gives more wear resistance. It was one of Bill Moran's favorite steels for many years. The main problem with W2 over the last 10 years or so has been availibility. That and the fact that it is as tricky to heat treat as 1095. You must quench it in VERY fast oil. There is a goodly amount of it floating around out there thanks to Don Hanson and a couple of other guys, but most if it is only suitable for forgers because it is in round bar form. I think that Darrel Ralph had some thin flat stock a while back. This is not a problem for me because i am a new smith and can't charge a lot for my knives even if I do have to pound one out from 3/4 or 7/8 round bar. The steel that Don got is VERY good and takes a nasty edge even in the hands of a hack like me....lol. And it is damn tough too. Mr. Moran once said that it is almost as tough as 5160 and L6 (although Bill made some pretty big knives out of it in his day) and takes a better edge. Pehaps the perfect steel for a small to medium sized tough use knife and none of the quality control issues you may find with some 1095.

Thanks for the insight. I had no idea, as I'm I'm not the only one. I wouldn't be apposed to W2 for the steel. I think right now we are all just trying to narrow down the design.

W2 would be kinda tough for a "mass production" knife., but good if guys were looking to have a blade made. for themselves. You can get W1 in PG flat bar like 01 though and it might be bit tighter on the specs than a lot of 1095. I was just thowing that out there because i have about 250 pouds of the stuff and I really like it.:D The carbon content on W2 can vary depending on what the cutomer wantd it for. The stuff i got from Don is right at 1% and it was originally made for GM for use in body panel forming tooling. I sent a big piece of it to Jerry Fisk to use in forging the Custom Forum bowie.

I vote for a poll with six choices of shape. The tabulation will be easy interpret. BTW I'm in.
