Wanna see my big wheel?

What do you have powering that?

Just out of curiosity, could you run a wheel like that with a small tracking wheel and 72" belts?

Fascinating as ever.

I have no way to test the hardness but it feels harder than my other wheels just with my thumb nail. Its definitely a high quality wheel to withstand hard use of WW2, at least I presume its that old.
Bruce

what's the rubber hardness like ?

- now you're going to see a run on surplus tank wheels. :)

This is only a 1 hp motor but has plenty of torque because of the gear reduction of 4 to 1
To keep the surface feet per minute down I had to go to an 8" pulley from the original 4" used with my 14" wheel. Don't ask me to do the math, I'm just a lowly knife maker not a methamtition.

The 72" belt won't even go around the wheel alone, so longer belts are needed.

Well that is probably telling about my skill at mathematics. :)

Thanks for the response. Lowly knife maker? That's the funniest thing I've read all week.

Who's that hippy in the second pic??? :p

Very cool Bruce!

BTW- Just the circumference of a 24" diameter wheel is 75.4"! (circumference= pi X diameter)

That's awesome Bruce, how heavy is the wheel and do you need a motor with a starter on it to get that big of a wheel moving without overheating the motor?

I gotta make me a belt grinder, I'm sure I got enough parts laying around the barn to build something.

He'll I even got a portable forge, the kind that looks like an old Weber charcoal grill but with fire brick and the pipe for the hand crank bellows, I have a variable speed squirrel cage fan for it too, just gotta find the time to put it together. ;)

I should just take the leap, I've got all the tools I need, 'cept a heat treat oven, (although I do have my torches), mmmmm I'll have to pull everything out and see what I still need.

Im rekindling my youth. I look homeless with a back pack on now.

So Nick, if I have a 1700 rpm motor with a 2" drive pulley running a 8" driven pulley and the 24" dia wheel, how many surface feet per minute does that work out to be? I took shop math and may have been absent that day.

Ted, its made of 1/4" aluminum so its actually pretty lightweight. It takes off like any other grinder especially with the gear reduction pulleys.

Yes you need to put a knife shop together. Half the fun is building equipment to build a knife.

Bruce Bump, I see you are one of the Aspen Green lovers on Bladeforums too. :D
