WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE: GEC Outlaw Jack #76

I recieved my Yellow Rose on Saturday. Man I like this thing alot! It's very slim, somehow it feels more pocketable than any of my other jacks, and I've got a few really nice ones! I even have a powderhorn that has the exact same blade stock, but somehow this #76 feels slimmer and easier in the pocket. I can't wait to get a nice dark patina on this baby, I'm thinking it will contrast nicely with the yellow bone.

Vic,

Very nice!! I like the lack of jigging. I bet it will look very nice with a patina.

Kevin

Ps, thanks for the nice background on those shots!

Great looking yellow rose, Vic. If I were to grab another Outlaw, that'd be the one.

Thanks for the comments guys! I do really love it, GEC really hit the nail on the head with this one. What surprised me most was how much blade they were able to pack in the frame and how thin it was. It also feel VERY nice in hand, the hump in the handle matches up very nicely where my middle and ring finger meet, it just fits my hand very well.

That thing looks killer Vic. Thanks for the pics.

I have my next purchase down to two GEC's. Either one of these or a 66 moose to round out my little 66 collection(scored a 66 stockman on the trading forum). I got some credit to spend. I ended up returning the Maverick. While a great knife the handle did not sit well in my hand.

Beautiful yellow rose my friend! My 76 should arrive tomorrow, I will be sure to post some pics.

I thought it would be interesting to some to give an idea of size comparison of the Outlaw with the Case SBJ. Many here have the Case, so I figured it would be a good knife to use.
Outlaw is slightly longer.

Both are beautifully constructed, and ooze quality.

Liners and handles show no gaps, the Outlaw just a tad thicker in the pocket.

The Outlaw does pack a good bit more main blade than the SBJ.

Secondary pen blades are closer in size.

For most, the SBJ gives a three finger grip, the Outlaw is just large enough for four.

Both are great knives, that give the owner a sense of pride. The SBJ is extremely comfy in hand with its handle shape. The Outlaw is not far behind, with its handle providing comfort against it's thinly ground secondary blade. Of course what we know here, the Case can be had by many thousands of people, the Outlaw not so much.;)
If it looks good to you, get one in the flavor you want now. Speaking from experience, waiting can keep you from finding the one you want.

The more I carry my two the more I think they're my perfect pattern. I've been partial to two bladed jacks since I got my first knife (a Barlow) 40+ years ago, and these just fit my hand and my pocket.

Maybe I never need to buy another knife again!

Nah...what's next?!? :D

I agree with Kevin, good and very useful comparison. Great photos too!

I've been partial to two bladed jacks since I got my first knife (a Barlow) 40+ years ago, and these just fit my hand and my pocket.

Yep, a barlow was the first knife I bought with my own money, saved from delivering newspapers and mowing lawns. That was a little over 40 years ago, and I still have it. Been partial to two blade jack knives ever since.

After some whittling I notice the pins tarnished and I could see the pin on the butt end was recessed a bit. Most likely from the two times I dropped it. I tightened it down a peened in very tight. Challenging because the pin is halfway in the pinched section. It gave me a chance to try shaping the pinched section. After sucess I went ahead and did the pivot end also. They got a little soft when I had to peen that pin when I first got the knife.

Now I am a real happy camper. I went ahead and took care of all the little areas that bolster sat higher than the bone also.

Kevin.

Btw, for some reason this kind of stuff ends up making me more attached to a knife.

I first read your description of the work and viewed the attached picture on a tiny screen. At first glance, I thought I was looking at a nekkid pin in a gutted bolster!

(It was the reflection of the light bulb.)

Whew.

Btw, for some reason this kind of stuff ends up making me more attached to a knife.

I understand that.

At least, that's how I feel when something goes well.

Good job!

Thanks guys. If there is a next time I will do WIP. This one was a spur of the moment thing. It took about 10 minutes.

Trying to show both a little better.

Compared to the shot from the other day

Its not a big deal, I was just happy to be able to have a little success :)

Yay, after two weeks of waiting it arrived.
I always thought about modifying the pen blade on my white owl into a coping blade, but was afraid it would be on the short side. Since the Outlaw has a longer pen, I pondered for a while. Eventually I found the courage to disfigure a perfectly fine brand new knife.

Absolutely no regrets...

No reason for regrets IMO! That looks great, gives you what YOU want, and Im sure you were careful to avoid ruining the HT.

Thanks for sharing that.

Oh, and that is a beautiful and colorful photo to sum it all up :)

Has anyone seen the "honey brown jigged bone" outlaw jacks in person?

I don't recall seeing any pictures of them here.

They look, er, "unfortunate" to me, based solely on GEC's primary, low-resolution image, and their relative scarcity in this thread leads me to wonder if others feel the same, or if there were simply others they liked more.

I've been surprised before when confronted by an actual knife, however, so am interested in anyone's perspective on this one's potential charms.
