WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE: GEC Outlaw Jack #76

Very nice Sam!!

I swore I wouldn't pick this one apart, but once I had to buff the bolsters I looked it over very well. Gap in the liner and blade play.

I don't know if you can see the piece of paper I slid in the gap last night. I already tightened it down and its gone as is the serial #10. I figured while I was tinkering.

Hey Kevin, I too had a recent GEC with a bit of blade play. Honestly it's not too big of a deal for me, because I can easily fix it myself, like you have. The big problem is when they grind the tang of the blade down too far and it's thinner than the spring making it impossible to get rid of blade play. I haven't experienced that on a GEC, but I have on other makes and its a bummer.

Hmm, handy you've got the skills to sort these problems Kevin. I think if I was on your side of the pond with that knife it would have gone back. Not the norm for GEC though as we know.

Luckily my issues are minor and cosmetic. Fit wise the blades are perfectly centered with no play and no gaps anywhere. It's always a nervous wait over here as sending a lemon back is an expensive pain in the proverbial. The last few GEC's I've picked up have been from the same vendor who puts up multiple, zoom able pic's of each knife so you can eliminate the ones with gaps, off center blades and other obvious visual problems.

Gotta agree it's a great pattern though:)

Sam

Hey Vic,

Your right its not a big deal to fix if you can. I just wasn't expecting this much tinkering on the first night. I thought of sending it back actually. Just out of principle. Its okay, now its mine.

Sam,

It is not the norm from my experience, but the more knives I get that need this kind of work, the less faith I will have.

I agree, it is a tremendous pattern. Im carrying mine today, all kinks worked out. I was very close to sending it back.

Kevin

I'm glad you're happy with it! It must have taken a lot to get you out of the no new knives for a year deal!

Yes, it did! Luckily this one was a gift, so technically I didn't break my rule. In reality, I broke my rule :D

The fact it was a gift was more reason to just fix it and carry it and not make any deal out of it. Nothing worse than giving someone something and having it turn into a mess :)

Root Beer Float and 'Natural' stag. Both essentially flawless; no gaps, wobble or finish anomalies. I'm really diggin' this new pattern. Perfect size (for me), nice uniform pulls and they feel great in the hand. I really like the orientation of the pulls, too.

Two beauties Rick! Awesome shots too. I'm really getting attached to mine after a day of carry and use without any complaints. Even pulls like you said.

The bolsters are really different on the stag one. Never seen that.

Oh man, look at that stag! Beautiful, just awesome.

Carrying the Root Beer right now, it's possible that it may become my favorite gunstock over my Schatt...we'll see when Ole Jack in Northfield trim shows up.

You guys are making me anxious! Supposedly the mailman will be here tomorrow with a yellow rose, just for me :D

Rick.....

Beautiful.......................and you know how to kill me those pictures

Does anyone elses snap open much stronger than it snaps closed? I was wondering is there a way to design a slipjoint to do this?

I don't have a #76 yet, but 2 of my recent slip joints from GEC have the same kind of walk and talk. Firm snap on the open and a slightly less firm snap on the close. It could also be that your finger is still in direct contact with the blade on the open swing

Thanks Vic. I haven't had a GEC like it. Its part of why I like the action. Where my 73's may BANG open they also BANG closed. This one actually has an aw inspiring snap open nicer than my 73's but a very tame closing. Its nice IMO. Thanks for the input.

No complaints there eh Rick? Two stunners:)

Dang Rick, those are some lookers!!! I saw your stag 76 over at the vendor's site, looked to be the best of the bunch in my opinion. Good snag sir, I'm jealous. ;)

Rick's pictures are why I like photos/pictures better than scans. There is actually warmth in the pictures and the contrast of the leaf and wood really highlight the knives.

Very nice Rick.

So you're the one that got that stag Outlaw Jack! ;) I saw that one after it had been sold and thought somebody must be very happy! :) It's a good looking knife.

Camera photos do look better. I agree with you, Ed. When it comes to studying old knives and especially purchasing old knives, I prefer the detail shown in scans.
