Am I incorrect in seeing that (if this is a real knife like some people seem to want us to believe...) the blade on this beauty is exceptionally THICK!!

Looks at least 3/16'ths to 1/4". Man oh man, this is like the good old days of thick bladed customs...

I am so excited for this new development. I can only wonder if I will have the option of titanium handles, or will they only be STAINLESS with and endless variety of insert materials?

AW, SHUCKS!! I'ts probably a fixed blade anyway...

A thicker blade, hmm, difficult to tell as the angle of the photograph, lens, etc. can cause distortion. However, the blade pictured is approximately 50% wider than the weehawk 42, while the thickness does appear to be at least 3/16" (also 50% wider), and more like 1/4" (distortion and photo enlargement come into play here). Kris blades tend to look better with a steeper grind (read that thicker steel), or at least I think they do. A 3/16" blade won't fit in the 42 handle, but by shaving a few thousandths off the inside of the handle slot, a 5/32" would. Why not a new handle altogether? Well, maybe, but with all the 43 and 47 activity recently at BM, and lead times, and retooling costs being what they are, it's questionable that there has been sufficient time, etc. for a new handle. Maybe we'll know by Friday. In any event it's great to see the return of an old favorite, regardless of blade thickness. There's no doubt BM did it right.

Well, comparing their picture to my old BS Cutlery custom, I'd say it looks to be 3/16" blade stock. There are so many "maybes" in this that my head is spinning. Maybe they were able to get Mr. Samson to grind a limited number of blades for them. Maybe they are going to re-introduce the Customs that everyone envies so much. Maybe this is going to be a limited production bali with a thicker blade and wider handles.

All I can say is, "Why did I quit my job!?"

No matter what, if it's a good thick bladed bali, I'm all over it.

Guys, a couple of little "birdies" told me that we may even expect special scales ---- AND, OK, no more leaks !!! Have fun ---

Does "Special Scales" mean "Custom inserts of every imaginable kind"?

Just wondering?

Howsabout Osama Ben Ladden Shin Bone Custom inserts, Smooth, but with a bite.

Actually, I don't know if this is the place to post this, but my greatest fear is:

This terrorist attack could have been done by Americans.

Americans with Knives.

If this was done by another country/people, then we (maybe) could band together against it.

If this was done by Americans, then the loosing of our Knife ownership "privliages" will be the least of our problems.

I am 32 yrs. old. I don't think that there will be anywhere near the rally of support responce that happened durring WWII after Pearl Harbor.

I Also don't think that my custom knife with carbon fiber handles, and a ceramic blade would be too PC right now.

I think that anything that can't be detected by a metal detector will be "banned"..

If this is too off topic, then tell me, and I'll stop.

This is probably better off in Knife Disscussion, but, I usually only post in the Balisong forum, and all those other people with knives kinda scares me....Intimidating...
:)

Yes, i also have been told of a specific type of insert which makes me very happy:D :D :D

Have now heard from more than 3 sources that these Balis may only be available "factory direct" --- and stay tuned for the pics of the scales ---- wow ---!!!!! DD, look out , BM may be on a roll !!! Too many knives -- so few $$$$s !!!!

I'd REALLY REALLY just LOVE a price range, as I have to figure out what paychecks I should hang onto. Either way, I'm getting one. PERIOD.

DD,

I brightened it up a bunch... it is really a low res photo, but it *appears* to be a Damascus steel...

Now, that is totally a guess on my part, but if I make it out right, there is a pattern there of light and dark throughout the blade.

IF this is true, I'm even happier than before and WILL definitely buy one before Christmas :)

Alan

now sir... dont tease abtou leaking info if youre under oath :) you'll make these kids go thru puberty again..:p

Damascus, eh?

Well my only problem with that is that it means it'll cost more, which doesn't really help me too much :(

Damascus/Damasteel/pattern welded ... I'm all about that!

It's an exciting time to be into balis!

ok, forgive my ignorance, but there are two questions I need answered:
1) What specifically is Damascus steel and what's so great about it?
2) I'm a little unclear on what a hollow grind is. Any grinds at that. Gollnick's site didn't really help me too much

Damascus or pattern welded steel is two (sometimes more) different types of steel welded together in alternating layers (250 final layers is not uncommon) by various methods. When etched with mild acid, the two different surfaces are revealed as two different shades of gray. The pattern of the contrasting colors can be varied by twisting, grooving, stacking, etc.; even powdered metal is used for miniature pictures. Steel cable welded solid is also a form of damascus steel. This is a very simplified description of the process in question. For pictures, look in the Gallery, or just about anywhere knife pictures are found. It was originally developed to get the best of strength (mild steel) and cutting ability (high carbon steel). It's best attribute to me is that it looks great.
A hollow grind is the concave grooved grind that you see on some of the pieces (for example) that Dawkind displays. They can also be much wider, such that you would have to lay a straight edge across one side to see light under the middle of it. Straight razors are commonly hollow ground. A flat grind is like a V in cross section. A convex grind curves slightly outwards on the sides.

It looks highly polished, but it doesn't look like damascus to me. Look at the other two pics. Doesn't seem to have any discernible damascus-like pattern. But they are polished, thats for sure.

Here's the scoop.

These are custom 4" high polished Kris blades, 3/16" thick. Cocobolo wood handle inserts. Stainless steel frames. They are only making 25 of them, and the cost is $800.00 each with delivery in October 2001.

Also, they will be coming out with future customs in different blade styles. :)
